I’ve been listening to all the Tom Clancy (Jack Ryan) and Lee Childs (Jack Reacher) book series I can get. I just don’t have the time to sit down with a book and rarely watch movies. It’s a great way to pass the time in the car vs listening to the same 5 songs or bogus news, or DJ chatter on the radio.

I prefer the quiet time to clear my head or just to sit back and enjoy a good story. What are you guys listening to?

Anything else like Jack Ryan or Jack Reacher out there I haven’t come across yet? Any cool outdoor setting series. Westerns mystery paramilitary etc.

I don’t have satellite radio in my car, and don’t want another subscription and I’m not a fan of most podcast. Audiobooks seem to be the thing for me.

    Thanks in advance

Clive Cussler novels with Dirk Pitt as his main character. They are pretty good. The movie Sahara was based off one of his novels.

I recently downloaded Stranger in a Strange Land to listen to. I believe someone on this forum had highly recommended this book. If you are into science fiction I sure did really enjoy the Silo series by Hugh Howey.

Anything that’s a good story is fair game. Sometimes it’s nice to have continuity which is why I guess I’ve been sticking to series, but a good one off is fine. I appreciate the refs guys keep them coming.

No, but I got started on the A. American series Home which I forgot to mention above. Unfortunately, I haven’t found them available at the library and they’re pretty expensive. I don’t have an audible account because I don’t think it’s worth what they charge, so I downloaded mine individually. The good news is they’re mine and I have them on my phone so I can listen to them anytime. I’ve played the series over several times.

When I read paper books I did enjoy the older Stephen King books, but his stuff started getting pretty goofy and I got turned off to him. I may browse what he has out too.

There is a new one out that caught my eye. I’ve got a couple Jack Reacher’s to go. No I’ll be looking for new material. Appreciate the rev.

Anyone else listening to or reading a good book/ series that’s available on disk?

Vince Flynn's Mitch Rapp series is great. They made the movie American Assassin based on his work. The books are obviously better...

Have you heard of the “Libby” app?

Libraries loan audiobooks and all you need is a library card and you can listen with this app. Very user friendly.

    Lone Survivor
    Unbroken
    Tough As They Come
    American Gun
    13 Hours
Thomas Jefferson and the Tripoli Pirates

...some of the audiobooks I enjoyed.

Nope, never heard of that either. I can borrow hard copies but this could be a game changer if I can download audio files. Thank you. I’ll check into it.

I downloaded the app and called my library for my card #, but it wasn’t recognized by the app. I’ll stop in tomorrow and see if maybe I need to get issued a new card or something. Seems really cool. I’m really interested to see how it works out. Thanks again.

Did you add your library branch? I think I added the library my card was from. Then inputted my card number.

If you just put a card number in it may not recognize or be able to verify it. Just thinking out loud.

Try out Clive Cussler's other stuff also, his Oregon Files series is very good.

Yes, I searched for it and found it within the app. I think my card is old. I normally just give my name at the desk. They’ve offered to issue me a new card, but I can checkout items without it, so I declined. This will give me a reason to get a new one I suppose.

I use it on road trips. I download ahead of time so I do not use the mobile data. (It is set to WiFi only anyways)
Not all libraries use Libby, some use other apps.

Lone survivor, I gotta remember that. Read all Jack Reacher.

All good now. I went in today and requested a new card issued. I haven’t tried it out yet I’ve only had time to browse. Do the books get downloaded into the app? Just wondering if you can use it without service or data?

I have an iPhone. By the sound of @LogCabin post above it’s possible. That’s really nice if it works like that.

Patrick O'Brian, CS Forrester .... Shakespeare is often better than you might think, newer versions anyway.

    John Le Carre.

Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy :)

And yes, get them from your local library, on CD or streamed

    With or Without service.

I download the book when I have WiFi.
You can listen as it downloads, too. Using Mobile Data.
The setting is in the 'Download Behavior'.
    I choose WiFi only.

Lots of Lovecraft on You Tube.

Audiobooks come and go on YouTube - at one time there was a lot of Le Carre and Pratchett ... none now

Also the BBC 'Sounds'/iPlayer service has a lot of stuff under Drama, Comedy

Currently enjoying James A Michener's Alaska. Haven't read any of his books before, but it's pretty interesting so far.

Thanks for the continued recommendations folks. Any worthwhile content is fair game anything that helps with growth or learning is fair game too.

I’ve just gotten started in the last year or so and got on the 3 authors I mentioned A. American, Lee Childs and Tom Clancy Jack Ryan series.

I was able to find more Books than what I could get through my library so I’m excited to get some of them. They have a long waiting period, but they’ll come up eventually.

Steven Rinella just got the audio rights back from his book American Buffalo and he re-recorded it. It’s a great hunting story of his with the history of bison in North America. Great book

If you enjoy history, anything by Nathaniel Philbrick is good. Several of his titles are on Libby/Overdrive.
