I headed out this weekend for a Daddy/Daughter overnighter to our favourite spot in the woods. My daughter was looking forward to it all week and wouldn't stop asking about it. We headed out of the city Saturday morning and arrived shortly after lunch.

I setup a quick tarp shelter and then got to work on a fire for lunch.
    IMG_6248.jpg
We grilled some hotdogs over the fire, Jules likes hers without the bun. :)
    IMG_6286.jpg
After lunch we did some shooting where I had some time to finally sight in my new scope on my .22. Jules decided she was tired and went to take a nap in the shelter.
    IMG_6292.jpg
After bore sighting and then putting through about 40 rounds I was pretty close. That's a 10 round grouping at 25 yards. I was using the extremely expensive/high tech setup of a card table and cardboard box with some cutouts as my bench and gun rest, so I was pretty happy with this.
    IMG_6288.jpg
    This is about 65 yards.
    IMG_6290.jpg

After I was happy with my scope, I gathered firewood until Jules woke up and then we headed out to find all the different types of flowers that were blooming in the area.
    IMG_6301.jpg
Lots of variety, even this late in the season. Last time we were here there were also some amzing Tiger Lily's, but they're all gone now.
    Flowers.jpg

Time for dinner! Dinner was simple, just the way I like it. Marinated steaks over the fire, and yams/sweet potatoes (whichever the one with the orange flesh is) cooked directly on the coals.
    IMG_6307.jpg

For dessert, classic s'mores using JUMBO marshmallows! :) Juliana approved!
    IMG_6309.jpg

A little more time by the fire, then it was bedtime!

    CONT....

After a great sleep, there was an awesome sunrise!

Breakfast time! Coffee, bacon, and cinnamon rolls on a stick!

    Good morning!

Bacon on the grill and cinnamon rolls on a stick.

These turned out amazing. First time doing it. 10/10, would recommend! :)
    IMG_6318.jpg

After breakfast, we cleaned up and did a little more shooting before heading home.

What a great trip and report! Thanks!

Tell Jules that I agree with her hot dog preferences. I can eat a lot more of them without the buns.

Sweet potatoes. There aren’t many, if any, yams on this side of the Atlantic. Even the canning companies get it wrong.

I think you two should join the Roughians Group. You will have fun there. :)

    Now that’s what it’s all about !
Great job on getting the next generation out there and enjoying the wilderness!
Looking forward to when my kids are a bit older and I can do the same with them.

Great trip report. My kids always loved taking naps in the woods. Try to get them to take a nap at home though?... no way! :)

Is that pink red ryder? We took my buddy's son out shooting the other day. He had some trouble with the .22 but loved the red ryder.

    Nice trip. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks everyone. She's a trooper and was upset that we only had time for one night. Looks like her next trip is going to have to be longer.

    Thanks @NevadaBlue! :)

For sure. They don't have to be too old. We took Jules on her first 3 night backpacking trip when she was 2. We only went in about 5 km, and it was all accessible with the chariot, but it was some definite backcountry random camping. :)

The cinnamon rolls on a stick were seriously so good. After about 3 of them I finally got the timing down. You've got to make sure they're not too thick on the stick though.

Haha. Nope, just you're regular ol' hickory smoked, thick cut, side bacon. Pretty darn good though. ;)

    Thanks @gohammergo!

Yup! She picked it out herself. She's still not quite strong enough to hold it up herself, so we're trying to figure out the best method of support (shooting sticks, bench rest, sitting, etc), and she hasn't quite figured out how to use her dominant eye for sighting yet, so it's a bit of a learning curve. But she wants to get out and shoot it every time I I pull out my gun, so we'll keep working at it.

Most excellent. What an awesome trip. I have to say though, that my favourite part was the nap. I love a good camping nap. Way to go, Jules! Way to go, Dad!
