I have forged a number of small axes from 5160 and like it very much, but the available stock size limits its use.

I made 1 very small axe from 4140 and it seemed to take an edge very well.

One of the most common axe steels is 1060, which I had not been able to acquire until I recently found some at a reasonable price. First package arrived today, photo below. More is on the way in different sizes.
(1060 is on the left, these blanks are about 2 1/2 lbs +/-, on the right is H13 and S7 for punches and drifts, etc.)

One popular axe maker is using 4142 with good reviews so I have purchased some of that as well.

And because it was available in the right size and at a good price, I also just purchased some O1. This is normally a very expensive steel in larger sizes so would not normally be used for axes but I think it should do very well.

I hope to be making and offer some axes and possibly adzes out of this material as they become available and would like to get your feedback on choice of these steels or other potential options you have experience with I might consider in the future.

4140-42 and 5160 are both excellent for toughness. 5160 will get a bit harder but 4140-42 will through harden a bigger section. So 1060/01 for small axes, 5160 for medium axes, and 4140-42 for larger axes.
