I don't know if this has ever been brought up in this section but has anyone ever talked about putting together an annual cookout for Ohio bushcrafters? Obviously not everyone in Ohio could come to one location (or maybe they can), maybe we just move it every year to be held somewhere else in Ohio.

It doesn't have to be crazy, maybe just reserve a gazebo at a park, cook on the grill, chat in person, play some horseshoes, corn hole or kanjam? Bring our significant others and children, or not... lol...

Just an idea, it wouldn't be until summer anyways so I just wanted to get everyone's thoughts on it...

I like it! I am in central OH- there are some nice parks around- some people could fish, some could carve and there could even be a trade blanket. Ohio meets used to be fairly well attended- it might just take some smaller icebreakers to get that momentum back. The old trade blanket /trade tables were a great way to try out some great gear and keep costs down.

Sounds like a good idea, I fish from a kayak and we have kayak rodeos, same sort of thing and they are good to get to know people.

Very cool. I am hoping it gains more interest in the next couple months so we could maybe put something together for this summer. I am thinking it would have to have 20+ for sure people attending in order to make it a success. Maybe donations can be gathered to pay for food, drinks, rental, permits, etc...

I am not sure if rental or permits will be needed if we do it in a state park. Might need to contact local LE if we are going to be having trade blankets with knives/axes and other things that could be considered "weapons" for sale. I don't know anything about that...

I'm loving the idea of this! I've long thought, especially as many of us that live in Columbus, a day...thing would be great. sounds like a great idea, and I think the trade blanket is great. if the location allows it, some fire making and some carving/whittling could be fun while shooting the breeze and making new friends!

A day trip would be great! It would help to break the ice, exchange info, and build for other future gatherings.

I am glad people are on board with this. I will start doing some research on all of this.

I was also thinking that instead of hosting this at a random park, we could maybe meet at a camp ground or state park. By doing this, we would have access to a grill, gazeebo (I'm sure we would have to rent it), fire pit, wooded areas, fishing, etc. Not to mention, if anyone wanted to stay the night, they could. I am about an hour away from Findley State Park and they have group camps for rent, if enough people wanted to stay the night. I am also 1.5 hours away from Mohican Wilderness, which says it has primitive camps.

I personally think Findley (or somewhere comparable) would be the best bet if we wanted to have a fire going and have access to other things like a grill (to cook all the food) and a gazeebo. We wont "stick out" as much either. lol

Private sale of firearms or sharp things between Ohio residents are perfectly legal in Ohio. Only time an FFL would be needed is if one of the parties isn't an Ohio resident.

I understand that, I was just concerned about people having guns/knifes/other "weapons" in a state park... Don't want to give off the wrong impression, especially with how the world is today.

Understand. Was just chiming in. It is amazing how many people, including LEOs, think open carry is illegal or that private sales are illegal, etc. As for giving the wrong impression... well, I'm old enough that I rarely care what others think about how I ought to behave. ;)

Nothing illegal about it so long as the firearms aren't discharged. State laws override local, county, etc where firearms are concerned. The public/government places that prohibit carry are spelled out in the CHL laws and state parks aren't on the list. Nor are city parks.

We still have public parks in SW Ohio that have signs saying no guns. They are just signs that were put up many years ago, and no one has taken them down. I'm sure the wrong police officer would try to enforce the signs, not actual laws. Unfortunately, some police officers in my neck of the woods aren't so well-versed on laws. I used to be one of those police officers. I know a police officer who used to give speeding tickets to people who traveled over the speed limit listed in yellow caution signs. True story.

NE Ohio is a bit outside of my usual drive for camping/bushcrafting. Columbus area or southern Ohio would be better for me, but don't make any plans solely based on my preference.

I’m down. I think a dispersed camp out/meet up or cook out would be a fun experience. Especially for us novices ;) Just a suggestion, if there was a centeral location it wouldn’t be as far of a drive for everyone. Somewhere around the Columbus area might be easier for those located in the corners of the state, like myself. I know Wayne has dispersed camping, but it is a little South East of Columbus. Just throwing out some ideas!

They can try but in the end they will lose. OFCC has been pretty active about working to get those signs down.

There are a few parks that are allowed to post... privately owned but open to public and if owned by a church or school.

I understand completely. I would actually prefer if we did it in central Ohio so more people could attend. My only concern is that I am not familiar with central Ohio at all, and if I were to coordinate this cookout, I would want to be familiar with the area. If we decide it should be in central Ohio, that's great. I would just ask that someone else take the reins for coordinating and whatnot at that point.

I'm in for the day, overnight, whatever.
Doing this at a campground of some kind has many advantages.
Central Ohio seems most fair to everyone. I say that as a SW Ohio resident. Alum Creek, maybe?
Horseshoes and cornhole? I don't see myself wasting the chance to do bushcraft stuff with other bushcrafters! I can play cornhole any weekend but how often can I featherstick with others?

Alum Creek is fairly central. I’ve never been there. It looks fairly small and “urban”, but if we are just hanging out, it should be fine. We couldn’t use local wood for fire, etc. I have plenty of downed and standing dead trees I could put the chainsaw to.

I agree. I rarely do any real bushcraft—just, hiking, fishing, hunting, etc. I’d enjoy learning and practicing skills like bow drill or just plant identification.

We do one in the PNW and if you don't mind my two cents I will say pick a spot and a date and put it out there. It won't work for everyone and that's ok, they can make the next one. Take care of the cost and trust people will show and kick in to help with the expenses. It is an investment that will turn into a special event and hopefully become a tradition for you guys in Ohio. Our group has it pretty dialed in on what we do but it does take effort to pull it off and don't try to do to much, people like to talk and eat. Hope it works out for you all. Happy day

if that's not the place, no harm at all. I just know that was one that was being discussed, and happens to be crazy close to me....but that doesn't mean it must be there! I'm just excited at the prospect of this day get together, something I've thought that at least us columbus guys should do for sometime now!

I’ve recently done an overhaul to my backpacking setup and upgraded a few of my bushcraft tools in anticipation for some group meet ups this year. I’m very excited to start meeting others interested in bushcraft and ready to learn from those more experienced!

Maybe we can do a collective collaboration for a youtube channel or make an instagram or something like that once we get more organized. That way we can get more people interested in bushcraft around our area and invite more people to enjoy it with us. Just throwing out some fun ideas! It would be nice to build a community of kinship and education around here!

Mid West Ohio in the middle of Dayton and Lima. I’m definitely down to travel for stuff like this though. I told myself that I was going to start doing bushcraft more often and getting back out into nature this year. I’ve already done at least a dozen of Winter hikes this year and it’s been a blast. It feels good to get back out into Nature like I did when I was younger.

Just seen this. Moved from Texas to Mt. Vernon (1 hr NE of Columbus) yesterday.

If it is vehicle accessible and I can make it, I could probably bring a charcoal grill and do some chicken breasts or pork chops, and jalapeño poppers (jalapeño halves gutted, filled with cream cheese, wrapped in bacon and grilled).

No date set yet, kind of waiting for a break in this Ohio weather. I still want to get this thing rolling though, just been swamped at work lately. A lot of weird hours and not much time off. Loving the OT though lol

So lets lock in the place: Alum Creek, that good with everyone?

So next, would a weekend work best for everyone? I know it would work the best for me. Probably a Saturday?

There are already Ohio BCUSA campouts scheduled April 6-8 (https://bushcraftusa.com/forum/threads/ohio-spring-meet-up.219126/) and April 13-15(https://bushcraftusa.com/forum/thre...aft-meetup-ohio-wayne-national-forest.219510/).

Tough enough to herd the cats to a single event let alone splitting them between two events on the same weekend.

If you set a May date, we who are camping can talk it up at the gatherings.
Saturdays seem like the logical choice of day.

I will be there. Alum Creek is a great choice. Easy to get to from The highway lots of picnic areas.
