2 fire fighters went for an offshore fishing trip in south FL and didn't make it back Friday evening as planned. They're belived to have been in or near the gulf stream (a major current that starts in the Gulf of Mexico and goes up the east coast of the US), so they're possibly somewhere between north FL or as far as SC. There was a possible sighting in north/central FL area and the Coast Guard who was already activated responded to the area, but didn't find anything. At this point it's a multi agency search with lots of civilian personnel coordinatin to search as well. They were in a 24' boat, so while not small, it definitely is subject to trouble in a storm. Praying for a safe return.

Here's hoping they'll be found soon. It's an unfortunate truth that the ocean and the gulf take it's toll. They could be having mechanical issues and are at the mercy of the currents.

    But why no S.O.S?

That's is a concern. I don't know if the ship is still afloat, had equipment issues or what. Maybe they didn't have a sat phone and we're out of radio range. I read that they did get a ping off one of the phones, which is hopeful.

That's like trying to find the proverbial needle in the haystack that is running at 7mph. I live near Jacksonville and it was on our newa last night. The coast guard and the local firefighters were offshore looking for them but nobody seemed to know if they were still in the boat or in the water. Thank God for those coast guardmen and women that will come out to look for us that are crazy enough to go out on that ocean in a small boat.

A quick update. A tackle bag was found 50miles east of Jacksonville and has been confirmed to belong to one of the two guys. The search continue's and boats with similar description's are being asked to mark their canopy to avoid confusion from those conducting the aerial search. The back ground of the guys has me hopeful, but supplies wise I'm not sure what they had. At this point, fresh water is a major concern.

I wouldn't think that finding the tackle box would be good news. That would mean that the boat either capsized or sank. Debris in the water isn't good.

I had the same thoughts, but some think that it may have been intentionally thrown over as an additional means of attracting attention to the area. Being the only confirmed debris might be a good sign. The only other things found that they possibly tied to it were a cooler and some life jackets (confirmed not to belong to the boat) and a large net bundle that was mistaken for an overturned hull from the air.

One big factor on their side is the water temp. Currently it's 84F. A person could survive several days in the water as long as it's above 70F. They'll keep searching until they find a body, or the statistics say it's over.

No big development's that I've seen. Some are saying that they're searching too far south and need to look further up into GA and into the Carolinas. This whole thing really has me thinking about survival on the water. People often have PSKs for the woods, but I wonder how many have a kit with possibly being stranded offshore for a few days to a week+ in mind. Water would be one of the biggest things.

Yes...water and hypothermia are the biggest. If you remember the "Rule of three's" for survival, you can live three days without water. They are into day four. If the boat is in tact they can devise a way to get water through evaporation or collecting rain.
If they're in the water they don't have much longer.

The family has deep faith and everyone is trying to put a positive spin on finding the tackle box. The family said it could have been a sign from them saying "here we are", but if I was in a disabled vessel at the mercy of the ocean I would want to keep the tackle.

It's going to take a miracle.

I don't believe hypothermia would be a concern with the current air and water temps. There has been plenty of rain so quite likely they're making do there. The tackle bag, looked more like a mesh gear bag to me, that had some gloves, a map and a couple other contentside that I don't recall offhand. Seemed like odd stuff that didn't typically go together. Hopefully they'll be found soon.

I'm thinking they need to be searching farther north and east. The night they went missing we had a storm moving from southwest to the northeast. that wold have pushed them into the Jetstream, which flows north and east. That could run as high as 8 miles an hour. I said before this is like finding the needle in the haystack that is running away from you at 8 mph. I hope they are found soon. Blessings on all those out looking. Blessings on the families.

I have confidence in the Coast Guard's knowledge of currents and weather conditions. But as stated by the needle in a haystack reference, it's almost impossible to see a bobbing head in the water from the air and one would have to be real close to catch a glimpse while at sea level.

The best hope they had was to find a disabled boat either afloat or capsized.
A PLB (personal locator beacon) satellite distress beacon would have greatly increased their chances of being found.

As mentioned, the official search by the Coast Guard, as well as Jacksonville Fire and Rescue ends this evening. I was hoping for a development before now, but unfortunately it looks like we won't have any more information until it's too late.

This has me thinking more about my fishing trips and today I saved some copies of a float plan that I plan on using from now on.

It's official. Hopefully, they're still out there and will be found soon, but at this point we can only pray for closure for the family and friends.

Sad but at some point it's hard to justify expending the assets when the algorithms indicate that they probably won't be recovered. Smoke sent.

As everyone, hoping for a good outcome. 2 young fire fighter in good shape and trained in survival. I am sure when they left that morning, they felt confident and prepared. The same confidence we all feal when one ventures into the woods. I have spent my whole adult life trying to be prepared for the what ifs. Someting happened on that boat that day that was not anticipated. I no longer hunt or camp alone in the woods. My prayers are with all of you who do.

If you go to sea in small boats for whatever reason take a few minutes to make sure you have all your personal safety devices, and that they are in top notch condition. Prayers for the family, a a big thank you for all those that helped in the search especially the U. S. Coast Guard.

When camping or hiking you're not out of your element. I always hike and camp alone. But when you go out on big water on some kind of "floating device" and it all goes south you're in an alien environment, and you won't last long without help. Lord knows what kind of tragic stories will be told in the future involving space travel.

Prayers for the family but know that the end is just around the corner for all of us. They died doing what they loved!!

There's been a lot of talk in the Facebook fishing groups about the different location devices and how this could have ended differently. A buoy camera picked up a boat with two guys yesterday, but when investigated it was somebody different. They were asked to leave the area to avoid additional reports.

I couldn't tell you that part. Maybe just not near the buoys since if someone saw the boat in person they'd be able to perform their own check.
