I played hooky from work today so I could enjoy my birthday :) Last year I had to work because we had a training day on the 8th o_O

So I packed up some stuff in my new Danish military pack (I blame you all for my new obsession with backpacks! especially military packs!) and headed to my waterfall camp. I took my new leather bag that @Kacie and @Morning Crow sent me as well :)

    IMG_0876.JPG

First things first - I headed down the bank to get my waterfall picture. It's actually running again! Those 2 days of rain have really helped here! We need much more, but that was a welcome relief.

    IMG_0879.JPG

I brought along some cooking gear this time. I've been looking forward to some outdoor cooking, and I was excited that it was finally wet enough! I have my Firebox Nano and my little Esbit alcohol stove, which I used together for the first time today. I really like that setup! I had to put up a wind block.

    IMG_0881.JPG

You can kind of see my odds-and-ends tin, which is Swiss surplus. It's a work in progress, but it was kind of inspired by some videos I've seen of folks carrying bedrolls (historical reenactment, kind of) with their other gear inside, and only having a few things outside of their sleeping gear. I like a bunch of separate kits as much as anybody, but I like the idea of having a very small box of things. If that makes any sense. I'm overstuffed on birthday food, and I'm rambling :D Here's what's in the tin:

    IMG_0884.JPG

I've discovered that turning one leg of the Firebox Nano out (my pot is too small to turn them all out) allows me to stick the lid in to put the fire out.

    IMG_0886.JPG

It just took me a few minutes to boil up some water for oatmeal, and then I had my first meal in my super-duper-awesome woods bowl from @T. Pollock :4:

    IMG_0888.JPG

With my bowl in my lap, I sat and read awhile. I'm finishing Wind in the Willows.

    IMG_0889.JPG

After I ate I tramped around a little with just my leather bag and a knife (and my stick) but didn't get any pictures. I just enjoyed the sunshine and breeze, and wound through the woods until I didn't know which field I was heading out into :D It's wonderful having a farm I don't know well yet :40: I ended up heading home to paddle around the lake for awhile, which was fun except for trying to write in my notebook when the wind was blowing me all over the place :34:

It was a fun birthday! I'm glad I decided to take the day off :) I might get spoiled though - now I want to go to my camp again tomorrow! And the next day! For supper we made homemade ice cream :32: Peach ice cream :32: I ended up turning the tub inside the ice with a ratchet because the little plastic gear that joins the bucket to the motor was stripped out... Luckily my aunt had an ice cream freezer and we could finish it in there. Here - I'll make y'all jealous :D

    Great Birthday outing!!!

Those Nanos look awesome! Watched plenty of videos of Steve cooking with one.

I like my Bushcraft Essentials LF with an Esbit or Evernew. More bulky than the Nano though.

    You got that right!

My alcohol stove is sitting inside a Firebox Nano :) There are 2 short rods that poke through holes in the sides of the Nano, and that holds the alcohol stove right up close to the pot.

    Cool!

    Ehmm Danish backpack?
Looks like the webbing backpack I used as a conscript. In the Dutch army, based on British WW2 design. The Danes used those too?
    Any markings in it?

I'll check it when I get home - it seems like there was something stamped on it. I thought it was Danish anyway! That's what Varusteleka called it. Here's the link:

Awesome @HannahT, a great way to spend your birthday! I had peach ice cream once, homemade also. It was probably the best ice cream I've ever had.

Mmyeah.... but judging by your name, you're the lady of the house. Mine is glaring suspiciously at me right now, ever since I uttered the words "cool pack". I feel a veto coming up.
Well... maybe not a veto, but a distinct advice against it.... which pretty much comes down to the same.

Lady, yes, but I live with my mom... So when I open a new box and pull out a new piece of gear, no matter how awesome it is, I get a look :D My stuff isn't taking over the house or anything o_O Well maybe...

Looking around the internet, it looks like the British pattern 37 packs, though a lot of those are brown.

The Dutch cold war webbing gear is based on that system, although the large pack basically is an enlarged small pack. Same shape and form, just bigger. Different from the British and obviously Danish gear.
The apparent size in the original picture threw me off.

Now that's an awesome birthday right there, and that peach ice cream looks delicious! Thank you so much for taking us along and for sharing the photos of the woods bowl in use. Anytime I see something I've made for someone being used and enjoyed it puts a huge smile on my face :4: and makes all the love and care I put into making it soooo worth it!
