For all lovers the bolt knife here is your source of action and adventure. Every one else is free to lick used postage stamps as a hobby. at least until the tracker gets an nsn of its own.

High noise levels will be met with disdain bad looks and occasional name calling.

    Action GO!

Better yet grab a bolt knife and complete all your bushclass with it, or just do it over

double edges, clip points, saw-backs, guards, and stick tangs aint got no place in bushcraft. technically this should not be possible

Cant believe it didnt break at the knot. With a little sanding it should clean up nice

Does the new fangled A.S.E.K still count as a bolt knife?

Really excited about this thread, it should be a lot of fun. Will be back for sure.

    Yes ASEK will count

wait a min....that asek has a serrated edge in the wrong place, theres no way that a serrated edge can make those beautiful currlies coming off that wood. The internet said so, that those are worthless for everything but cutting melted crisco.

The internet wasn't counting on @field-expedient getting involved when they relegated that feature to Crisco duty. I believe those are the same people that think Trackers are useless unless you're fighting Tommy Lee Jones.

Very good post young fellar. You learn to do tasks with the knife you have, and this proves it can be done. I have had several over the years and can't say anything bad about them. joe

Alright, I have been dancing around bolt-knife ownership for quite some time now, and I thing this thread has used me over some sort of edge and I want to play!

I love the idea of doing Bushclass or some of the Hardwoodsman challenges again with a bolt knife!

Neophyte question: Where should I start? What is a decent bolt knife to buy without breaking the very fragile bank?

Anticipating loving and helpful responses from a civilian pastor!

The cheapest way to pick one up is to place a wtt thread in the trade blanket. Thousands of these knives have been bought many of which are sitting in a collection not being used. If you want to buy new they fall into the sub $50 range.

Are neopyphtes in the ways of bolt knives welcome to join in? Howie's challenge to do BushClass with one sounds like fun and now that we have had some rain which decreased fire restrictions in Montana, I can actually work on and finish up BushClass Basic!

    Here's my modded knife...

I went with an oval guard. The handle has been slicked and waxed, bevel thinned, sharpened clip removed to avoid "double-edged" issues in my State.

The sheath's stone pocket has been re-molded to hold a thicker Norton India stone and a firesteel loop added.

Before the bolt knife had been designed there was the Boker 155. They were a issued item included in survival kits for the Strategic Air Command. I feel pretty lucky to have the real deal.

I love bolt knives. The hardest part for me is figuring out which one to use; do I go old school or pick a Turley.

@field-expedient[/USER] that Boker 155 looks like they took my PAL RH 36 and shrunk it. But that is probably a topic for another thread.
Technically it isn't a bolt knife, but it does have a nice heavy butt.

Ok, so for someone not all that familiar with these, what are some of these brand names? I did a quick search on Amazon and OKC was the only one popped up. Not a fan of the lighter colored handle and the blacked blade. Love the blade shape and length though. Are there any other brands y'all would recommend?

Ontario is only one still making them.

Back in the day several outfits made them. Camillus, Utica, Milpar etc

The light tan leather will darken with some boot grease and the blades are Parkerized so it wears in to a nice grey color pretty quick.

@LostViking .... ok, I'm on the fence about getting one of these but I really like what you did to the one you pictured above. How did you darken the handle and shine up the blade like that?

All the brown leather tootsie roll handles you see in this thread were bright tan like that originally. Some wax or leather treatment darkens them nicely or you can just watch it happen with use.

Awesome use of the toggle field-expedient
I haven't seen that before. I will have to remember that one. But what to do with my fish spreader!?

OK, I will have to get out my original Camillus bolt knife for this thread. It's never too far, my favorite fixed blade.

I cut my teeth on that blade. They can do the job, better knives abound but you can do about anything you need to do with it. With my dad being a former AF Officer, we had a few around as kids to abuse. My first issue one is tucked away somewhere but I still have these on hand. The top SPEC-PLUS one should've been the issue one but they never caught one. Better handle and better grind. The bottom Gerber should also get more love. This one is sandvic steel and a great knife. Threw the Navy one in there because it became a jump knife when leather sheaths were frowned upon. FullSizeRender.jpg

It's a custom from Calico Forge. An awesome knife and sadly they are no longer around.
