Hey guys, I thought you might like to see a project that is nearing completion.

This was a pretty big project for me since I'm not a professional knife maker. I just have nice equipment...

It started of it in really rough shape. Rusty and beat to hell. Crazy uneven 3D grinds. Handle scales and guard were loose.

I removed the old scales and guard and cleaned up the flats on my 4×36" belt grinder to 120 grit. I also ground off the hammer Mark's on the spine.

Cleaning up the bevels was quite a chore and they are still not perfect, but markedly improved.

I also cleaned up the plunge line quite a bit.

I decided to go with an 1/8" copper guard, purpleheart and copper pins for the handle.

The old guard had quite a large gap. That's the main reason I didn't want to reuse it.

New guard shaped and ready to be drilled.

I don't normally work in sandals. Just posing for pics...

New guard drilled and hammered for a cool texture.

    Nice snug fit!

    Wood on and rough sanded.

Starting to look pretty good now!

Blued the blade and darkened the scales some with snow seal.

    Now to finish the sheath...

Afraid not. That's like a 6 day drive from Minnesota...I'm going to the Turley Dust Up meet in Missouri this weekend instead.

That looks fantastic. I love a good refurb!

I like silver-soldering guards like that, just my preference. I think it makes a nice neat line and seals up the gap, even when it is a little one.

I love that moment when the solder hits the right temp and just disappears into the joint.

Looks really good. I'm a fan of hammered copper. Goes great with the Purpleheart :)
