A friend of mine recently gave me this little dude. Another step in the long and convoluted history of Silva, apparently they acquired the Brunton name in 1996, and from 1998-2009 made and marketed their compasses in the US under the Brunton name, before selling the brand. It appears to be pretty much identical to the Silva "Starter" model. A nice, if basic, baseplate compass....

I did not know that relationship about Silva/Brunton. I teach a land nav course for NY Homeland Security. Before I was hired there, the previous administrators had ordered a bunch of cheap Bruntons. I have never been impressed with consumer grade Bruntons, especially the model they bought. Those compasses did not even have meridian lines inscribed in the bottom of the bezel and the circle target on the north needle was confusing. So I had them order basic model new Suuntos. Much better IMO for teaching and ease of use.

Totally agree on the new Bruntons. I'm an Outdoor Educator for the Maine Dept. of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, and the department issues assorted teaching sets to the local coordinators, either Silvas or Bruntons. We universally despise the new low end Bruntons.
