I have had quite a bit of interest in this design and the steel finally came in. So today I am going to start this blade. I am going to post up pics as I go and at the end it will be auctioned off here on BCUSA.

This one is going to be a beast so stay tuned and feel free to ask questions and leave comments.

Awesome. I will start the bid at $200 just on the sketches alone for the finished product.

We start with a piece of clear acrylic to make a template of the picture. This lets me get a good feel for the handle and blade before I cut steel.

I love the idea of using acrylic for your template, give you the look and feel and its easier to keep them from being damaged like paper or card stock. Also, sweet looking knife.

Bevels cut in to 120 grit. I leave them fairly thick (.0050") because I do quite a bit of grinding post heat treat. Now we drill the pin holes and balance.

There are almost as many recipes for heat treat as there are for cookies. I use 11 second quench oil for O1 but that is too slow for 1095. The blue bucket is 6.5 second oil and works better. I also use it for the thicker W2 blades with a hamon.

We should probably decide on the handle material. I like the traditional wood look. What would you guys like to see?

Desert Ironwood with dark liners would be killer. But you knock them all out of the park so I'm sure it'll be a winner regardless of handle materials.

This looks great! I am a huge fan of your 2 piece scales. Ivory paper in front of any heavy grained wood, with copper or black liners. It appears to be destined for greatness, no matter what is used.

Back in the shop today after a bomber of a week. Final bevels on after heat treat and edge tested.

The knife is done. Now for the sheath. IMG_0359.JPG
A prototype knife calls for an experimental sheath. I brushed the dye on in a diagonal and intermittent pattern that will hopefully make a "grain" look when it's finished.

Well, whoever designed that knife never had a sheath in mind. Hahaha. It turned out nice though. I put a snap on it and it is very secure. The "wood grain" on the sheath came out great.

That was a steal at the auction winning price! Congrats on an awesome knife. I haven't logged on in a bit due to all sorts of stuff. Sorry I missed this one. Would have been a good addition to my BAK collection. Nice work Ben! It is killer...

That came together really well. PaPa K got a heck of a deal on this package. I like the sheath design.

I'm saddened it didn't gather more bids. Ben does top notch work.
