last week summer camp ended and my kids had a few days before school started so i decided to take some time off work and take them camping like i've been promising forever! mom had to work and there is a campground in the national dune park that's close to mom's work so she could stop by and hang out for awhile, otherwise it was guy's time :)

the great thing about the campsite is it has 1st come 1st serve walk in sites. i reserved a site just in case because they've been filling up fast but we lucked out and got a walk in. i consider the extra money a donation to the parks and i'm ok with that :)

one of the best things i love about living where i am is i'm about an hour from lake michican and the sand dunes, it's like i'm on the ocean with out the salt and worry of crazy animals. i don't have the mountains or an ocean but the lake and dunes are amazing and sometimes forget how lucky i am to be so close to them. they wanted to go the beach, how could i say no!

the waves were absolutely crazy that day

i would take these yahoo's anywhere with me, despite the few meltdowns and kids being kids, i love them to death and had a great time!

@UAHiker, can you tell me a bit about what I assume is a weight on the hand-drill. What is it made of? How does it stay put?

yeah, funny thing is i made the weight for my pump drill and my son decided to try it as a hand drill, which i also had the same idea, he just beat me to the punch :)

it's made from brick mortar believe it or not and it's held in place by friction. just be careful otherwise it'll break like i found out, i was going to wrap the outside with duck tape to help prevent that. i got the idea from a guy on youtube named paleomanjim

That looked like a fantastic time out. Lots of activities and it sure is great being near a large body of water like that!

I've seen the MI dunes years ago, and I confess I had underestimated them! Never thought they were as BIG as they are.

At Whitefish Dunes SP here in WI, they planted long root grasses to keep those dunes in place and to help eliminate erosion. Of course, the result is that you really don't see the dunes any more.
