If you're interested in joining a meetup in Ocala, send me a PM with your email and I'll add you to the bushcraft meetup distribution list and provide the details.

    Thanks!

In the final planning stage now. It will be held in Ocala and by the end of this week a date will be set.

If you're interested, PM me with your email address and I'll add you to the distribution list.

Ok, so we have the date. Are we doing everything else through email or on here? I'm thinking stuff a long the lines of meal planning (individual vs community), gear passarounds (stuff that people want to try that someone else can maybe bring to the meet), fishing, etc.

We can post that here. I'll let people know about this as they RSVP. Good call on the gear passarounds. I like that idea.

@feellnfroggy emailed me and brought up a good point: "For those of you coming in off of the hwy, either 95 or 75 down hwy, it is mostly 2 Lane with passing zones. An accident generally blocks it up, and the drive is a bit longer than maps makes you think due do the residents who don't always do the speed limit. Allow yourself extra time when planning your route."

Hasn't thought that far ahead, I usually bring a couple pieces of bacon, 2 eggs and some jerky/trail mix to overnighters. A community meal never crossed my mind.

I also plan to bring the. 22 and pellet gun. Small game airgun hunting is legal.

To be honest, I dont know what to expect at an event like this other than carving sticks and shooting squirrels and practicing some things from bushclass. Lol.

So it sounds a shoot might be in the works. I might be going from a small pack with a few basics to a seabag.

This seems like a silly question for FL, but does anyone need some fatwood? I've got tons in my area.

I can't speak for anyone one else, but I'm good with with my supply. I grab a piece or two whenever I go out. The spot we're camping is loaded with pines too. Thanks for asking though.

I'm hoping for some more interaction on this thread. Is everyone else communicating through email or PM? Maybe I'm just getting a bit excited since this is my first meet.

No one is communicating on PM since the date was picked. People have been using this thread which is perfect. This is my first meet up as well. Just so happens I'm the planner too.

Based on responses on this thread I have you, @feellnfroggy, and @Edge308 as confirmed. Waiting for confirmation from @brokenotbroken and @Florida Bullfrog. Based on the availibility they sent me I assume they're both coming.

Bring extra gear that your willing to sell or trade we did it out of the back of the cars we didn't home the stuff in. Made some chili and cornbread in Dutch ovens. It was a good time.

I was kidding. Unfortunately, my backpacking chair needs a pole replaced, so I might tote a regular folding chair. I'm looking forward to it and hope the weather is nice.

I screwed up my availability. I forgot I had previously shifted around my on-call job duties to that week on behalf of a coworker which run thru that weekend. However, I'm still going to try to make it work. So Im a "hopefully."

Since this is the first meetup for a few people, myself included, I'm curious about what you'll be using for your sleep system.

Mines going to be dependent on the weather. Are we going to see the 60* overnights or into the 20s like Friday night.

I am unsure of Saturdays schedule, maybe I can get out there for some time during the day.

I was really looking forward to this.

I was thinking the same thing, But we will actually find some out where we are going I believe. The more the merrier though, if you want to lug it in a pack. Maybe it'll be cold enough to burn it all on the spot, lol.

Not quite either. There is about a 30 minute hike in, so some car camping options are off the table, but certainly not so that a few comforts couldn't be toted.

Maybe I missed it, but is there going to be any water sources to filter/boil from or do we need to pack it all in?

I'm packing all my water in, but we'll be right next to a large pond/small lake that can be used for water.

So i've been going through my gear closet picking out the goodies for this expedition, and I'm wondering if people are planning more than one trip back and forth from the car? For example: i have nice car camping chairs, but if the walk is 1/2 hour, perhaps it might be better to try to get everything done in one trip and buy a backpacking chair? Same goes for the potential for a cooler to hold drinks and food in. Anyone planning on bringing a chair or cooler?

I'm bummed I didn't make it back to the grocery store before the weekly sale ended. They had both hickory and Applewood bacon for $2.59 a lb. I was going to buy a lb or 10.

What time and where are you meeting/ camping? Folks could be showing up over the coarse of hours due to long traveling times, and unfamiliar with the area, so a way for them to connect with the group would be good. Are we bringing a shovel for the potty/ bathroom area or everybody doing cat holes?

I looked up the weather for that weekend and it's projecting 60s for the lows and 80s for highs with a 40% chance of rain on both days.

I'll be bringing some trade/sale items for sure if I can make it, so maybe we have a trade blanket time set for Sunday when we pack out?

I'm in. I'm thinking of bringing a gun after looking at the Ocala Forrest website. I''ll sure be hanging my food in a bear bag.

Bring two guns. A rifle and sidearm is always a good choice, when you have no reason not to. Bears aren't as rampant as the site makes it sound. But they are out there. (I've lived in Ocala since 96, and seen only 2 bears. (and they just opened bear season last year, so that thinned the herds a little). The fear is worse than the sightings. We will be away from normal campgrounds though, and the bears don't starve through winter, so they wont be aggressively foraging like northern bears, But caution is still optimal.

If I'm not mistaken open carry of a sidearm is legal in Florida while camping

Good idea. It's not often I get the opportunity to do a hike and overnighter with a rifle and hand gun. It'll be a good experience.

It's legal to open-carry a firearm in Florida while camping or fishing.

I will have to look up the law, but I believe Bullfrog knows it by heart. Open carry is legal when traveling to, during and returning from a shooting activity. Such as hunting. I am not sure about "camping" but as just about all of us will be small game hunting, your covered through your route to the field. That's not to say, the law surpasses common sense, just because winn Dixie is en route to your campsite, I do not believe I would walk in with my Ruger or 1911 on my hip. Be very careful here, if you are "open carrying" and you cover your pistol with a tshirt or conceal it otherwise, you are now classified as a concealed carry and must be properly licensed. It would probably be best is someone were to verify this last statement as well, but better safe then sorry.

Me personally, I carry under all conditions, licensed or not. Carried by 6 or judged by 12? Neither is very likely, but I have a better chance of that than winning the lottery, so Ill ere on the side of life. (this is personal preference and opinion)

It's legal under Florida State Statute 790.25

790.25 Lawful ownership, possession, and use of firearms and other weapons.—
    (3) LAWFUL USES.—The provisions of ss. 790.053 and 790.06 do not apply in the following instances, and, despite such sections, it is lawful for the following persons to own, possess, and lawfully use firearms and other weapons, ammunition, and supplies for lawful purposes:
    (h) A person engaged in fishing, camping, or lawful hunting or going to or returning from a fishing, camping, or lawful hunting expedition;

    Chapter 790 Section 25 - 2011 Florida Statutes - The Florida Senate

I just talked to the Florida National Forrest staff (Lee) and confirmed it's legal.

That said, now that I'm thinking about it, I just don't want to be the only dude showing up for the overnighter, walking around with a rifle. That would be weird and awkward for me & possibly creepy to you guys, especially since I'm new to the group.

I regularly see posts all over this board showing field guns in action. I believe this is a firearms friendly group, and this would be a neat opportunity to do a camping trip with a long gun. If for no other reason than because we can. So if it was a group thing, I'm in. Otherwise I'll probably just stick with a CCW pistol. Let me know?
