I live about an hour away from Zolfo and took the dog there this weekend. Here's the water level on the Peace River. The parking for the boat ramp was loaded with boat trailers I only saw a couple of canoes on the water. There's also "pioneer days going on the weekend of March 4, but i doubt it will spill into the woods but may hinder parking during the day. 023.JPG

Attention : the primitive camping at Rock Lake is non-electrical next to the RV's. I do not think (and hope) that this is not expected. NO CAMPING IN THE WOODS . I just got off of the phone with them.

I live close to there...it's Pioneer Park. No real trails to speak of, just a walk around the lagoon. It's the campsite of Billy Bowlegs. He was the Seminole chief after Osceola.

Pioneer Days is a big event. There will be hundreds of vehicles. I go there quite often...not really much of a bushcraft setting. I would never consider camping there. It's just a little postage stamp of a campground.

I don't remember if Rock Lake was a state park or not. But here are some things of interest regarding State Parks. A national Forest would be our best option depending on activites.

    Dear Mr. Thompson,

Thank you for your email inquiry regarding camping in Florida’s state parks. While there are a number of beautiful state parks that offer primitive hike-to campsites, the requirements of such camping situations are different from what you say you are looking for.

For primitive camping within Florida State Parks, we do require that you use designated primitive camping areas rather than just finding your own place to pitch a tent. You cannot fire projectiles within state park lands or small game hunt, nor do we permit the collection of deadfall for firewood. Most state park primitive campsites are $5.00 per person, per night.

I only have information about Florida state parks; you may want to look into camping options with the Florida Forest Service or contact local chambers of commerce for the counties you are looking into for alternative primitive camping options.

    Best wishes,

    Julie R. Kurisko

This is the exact reason why I chose Ocala for the meetup in January. Way more options and way less restrictions. @WILL, let us know when you move to Montana and have 100 acres of your own.

Florida State Parks, "Hey guys, come out and visit us. Whoa, whoa, what are you doing?! You can't camp there or build a campfire or gather deadfall or shoot a gun. And we're going to charge you. This is a state park, not the outback."

I've come to the conclusion that state parks in FL are for car campers and day hikers. That's it. So sad.

LOL I was actually picking apart her email earlier. She didn't say fire a gun.....She said "shoot a projectile." I am gonna have to research state regs, I'm pretty sure airguns are not classified in the no shooting clause, although more than likely small game hunting is prohibited as the parks are preserves mostly. The phrase projectile, I find to be an anti gunner word to classify anything that shoots under the firearms laws. Just accurate enough to sound true, but not quite. In which case, she had an agenda in her response, lol. Doesn't help the camping situation though.

What I inquired about was the ability to do bushcraft meet type things in a state park, such as hikeinto a random primitive camping spot, cooking fires with deadfall only, no large game hunting at all etc. as well as inquiring about any known public land that WOULD allow these things. The lady I emailed passed it off to this individual, and you have the above. So Private land in the area between Crystal River and Kissimee (the area I specifically inquired about) seems to be the best bet. And I don't know of any state forest down that way, only google maps could answer that one.

Goethe, requires 10.00 a day per vehicle, with specified campsites. During non hunting seasons we could get away with camping just about anywhere, but forestry is johnny on the spot out there with any smoke whatsoever. Wildlife officers are virtually non existent. And it borders a rather humassive (10k acres?) private property that sees no activity whatsoever. Otherwise anything goes. The canoe kayak trip mentioned would probably have riverside campsites, but I don't know of any besides suwannee. That's all I could find so far.

State forest do officer a lot more freedom. I took some classes with a couple of FWC guys and one worked Goethe. Unfortunately, I didn't stay in contact with him. I think a lot of state forests still want you to use their camping areas, but they are much more primitive than the state parks. Possibly a FL hike?

They do want you to stick to the campgrounds, but are less "enforcing" Due to the nature of hiking the trails and needing to emergency stop sometimes.

what about firewood in the state forests because I'm hoping they're different from the state parks that won't let you pick up a stick off the ground.

State forest should be much more relaxed. You can actually pay a small fee to harvest it by the truck load.

It's too far north for most of you, but I finally made it to check out parts of the trail in my area. I'm glamping at the Rice Creek Hilton with the family now.

He said there was random camping all along the river he didn't camp he took a paddle
Board all day but he said there were people randomly in the woods so I guess we can find a spot pretty easy depends on how far from the car you want to hike pick a spot close to go water and set up.

Here's a family outting to a place near me along the FL trail. It had places to hang hammocks, wasn't picked clean of firewood (probably due to having to hike in), had a well pump (though it wasn't certified potable so it'd have to be filtered/boiled) and would make for a relaxing weekend with the opportunity to hike some of the FL trail. Though it would need to be there and back unless you wanted to hike the short few mile loop trail.

Ginnie might be a bit north for some people and isn't very primitive. It is a nice park though. I'd be up for other options thats on the Sante fe if people were wanting to go that far north. I'm still unsure of my plans for that weekend as they seem to be constantly changing. Ginnie isn't a bad drive for me, I might be the closest, but as far as the group goes, I don't know.

I've lived just a few minutes drive from the Lake Wales Ridge State Forest for 20yrs. I've hiked every inch of it. There are three primitive camp sites that are available. All are nice. One next to Lake Arbuckle...another on a creek that empties into Arbuckle. And one in a nice hammock.

    NO SHOOTING!!

A small but peaceful campground is just down the road on Lake Arbuckle with a free boat launch.

There might be fire restrictions. Polk County just had some massive brush fires last week. Call ahead a get a heads up if any control burns are in progress. They do that quite often there. A camping permit is required.

We haven't had one for awhile, but I was recently informed of a free low use site in the St Augustine area. Looks like you can hike or paddle in, with the paddle in, being the easier of the two. I hope to check it out in the coming weeks.

I really enjoyed the last camp-out. I'd prefer to wait till at least November before doing it again. I've got a canoe now, so I'm looking forward to some over-nighter river trips for sure. Maybe we could do a water trip as a group.

I have a kayak so I would be good with a water trip.

I'd love to do another trip, but it's too hot for me to enjoy the woods. I haven't been on here as much lately due to my new hobby of saltwater kayak fishing. I don't think I'll be able to go tomorrow as planned, but hopefully this weekend. I'm also hoping to make a trip out to the gulf coast for some scalloping.
