As I get updates from the trail, I'll share them with the forum on this PA thread.

Amtrak from Philadelphia to Georgia late afternoon/evening Tuesday 3/12. Try to sleep overnight in the train, and will hit Springer Mtn Georgia Wed 3/13.

Weather forecast is a little moist.

Very brief responses to texts: "it's tough out here"

    No real photographs forwarded

After first day hiking in the rain "we're still in good spirits"

"There's some real characters out there"

"It's tough not knowing whom to trust"

"something in my hip hurts a lot"

I wonder what that hip thing is. The one thing I worry most about these brave peeps is that they push so hard on this one adventure of a lifetime, that they don't take care of injuries when needed, and those injuries wind up following them through the rest of their life. My friend Jeanine did a thru hike last year and she's going through some serious surgeries now. The last priority thing is sadly the most painful - she has a torn labrum in her hip due to her thru-hike. I pray that Christina finds balance between covering miles and keeping her body healthy for AFTER the walk.

Beautiful area... shame the weather is what it is, so she could have seen more. GPS shows her in Gatlinburg (itself a pretty town, especially this time of year). Guess she's out of the weather, which is good.

    Received first real call:

It was rushed as she was hiking, and worried that signal would fade out.

I'm paraphrasing a bit (artistic license and all):

    1) Holy Schmoly, I'm still out here doing this.

    2) I'm not quite sure why I'm still trekking and so many people who I thought were either more experienced, better equipped, or just sounded ready; have been driven off the trail.

    3) There's bushcraft, there's winter camping, and there's ultralight hiking. I'm glad I did so much winter camping this past year. I knew I wasn't packing enough gear to handle the 16 degree weather, and I'm fortunate that I was able to bail off that mountain. Half the people I started with are gone.

    4) It was a pretty low day when I tried to hike on 3/4" of frozen slush. After I had my 7th major fall (is anything broken kind of fall), I was really thinking of options.

    5) I started a fire in the rain to warm up the whole group. You guys would be so proud of me (yes, we are)

    6) Blisters on day 2. Been using my Leuko tape on everybody else. Send more when you can. Changed to hiker socks with individual toes.

If you make it into hot springs during trailfest, find J. Dalton, trailname Pipsisiwa. (Not sure on spelling)

That's my granddad! He through-hiked in the early 90s, and loved hot springs so much he bought some land and lives there now. Hes relatively active in the trailfest scene as far as I know. (Hes a woodturner, and you can see his stuff at the cafe/art gallery thing next to the iron horse bar, which is worth stopping in for wifi and coffee).

Wayne at Bluff Mountain Outfitters is good people too.

Edit: just saw you were already past hot springs. What did you think of max patch? Gorgeous spot in good weather.

    Someone's got a trail name.

On the day with the ice, she had 7 major falls. As she was going down she'd make the sound wwwhhhhooooooooopppppp.

Re-tell the story a few times, and you get wwwhhhhooooooooopppppp, wwwhhhhooooooooopppppp, wwwhhhhooooooooopppppp, wwwhhhhooooooooopppppp, wwwhhhhooooooooopppppp, wwwhhhhooooooooopppppp.

    Trail name is now ..........

Tracked her down. She's in a hotel with real plumbing. Anybody have family in Hampton TN that could run her some ginger ale?

4/21 Edit: Maybe not noro. 29 hours of rest, and she's on the trail again. Rather uncomfortable situation.

A lot of new experiences this week
    Epic rain day
Mega GI issues, first full sick day
Work for stay (free food, free bed at hostel)

2.89” inches of rain in one day. https://www.wunderground.com/calendar/us/tn/hampton/KTRI/date/2019-4?cm_ven=localwx_calendar Pushed through 20 miles of trail. Not sure what the motivation was.
    1. I’m wet, might as well keep moving until I can dry out
    2. Get miles in before the trail is closed by flash floods
    3. Can’t get to Maine without walking in the rain.
    4. 20/20 hindsight, regretted staying put in the tornado warning last week, just hike through it, the weather forecasters are always exaggerating.
    5. The Norovirus is taking hold of a lot of hikers a few days in back of me, run away, run away.

    387.7 starting point
Slackpacking? (dropped off ahead on trail, walking back to hostel southbound)
    400.8 Laurel Fork
388.2 US 19E, Elk Park, NC
    421.5 US 321
Sat 4/20/19 Zero day: Stomach bug, 29 hours of misery Americourt Hotel Hampton TN
    441.5 TN 91 (Osborn Farm)
    459.3 TN-VA State Line
    463.0 Damascus, VA

Have we heard from her since the incident? Did she encounter him? Just thought of her when I saw what had happened. Horrific

She's about 200 miles ahead of the incident (near Mt Rogers approx mile 500, she was at 704 then)

I'm sure it's affecting her ability to enjoy the experience.

She's figured out that she can't keep up with super athletic mountain goats ......... but she can start earlier, and hike later. Daily mileage accomplishments agree.

I've seen that picture backdrop (the cliff/ledge thing) and wondered where it was. I will jump out of a perfectly good airplane, but will not walk out and sit on a ledge like that... get vertigo just looking at it. Good on @ChocolateSpatula? Glad she's learned something else (can't keep up with mountain goats). And that's what the journey is about (to me anyway. learning.)
