We are getting ready to leave to meet @ChocolateSpatula? And I thought why not post a partial flat lay of our care package. 20190526_084926.jpg

We just got back! She is in great spirits. She logged 26 miles yesterday and crossed the 900 mile mark today. After weathering a pretty serious thunderstorm on a ridge line last night she seemed pretty happy to be in a car in the air conditioning for awhile! We took her to a camp store for ice cream (she needs the calories) and said our goodbyes. She still had 10 miles for the day. 20190526_151049.jpg 20190526_145937.jpg 20190526_145908.jpg

Oh yeah! She was blown away! Truth be told as happy as she was after walking 900 miles she might "smooth it" better than all of us!

No. We were in a complete dead zone. Most of the trail is like that. It may take her a few days to get to a place with wifi.

At least she knows now and can request membership when she has WiFi. You did a good thing today!

Pretty big deal. Made it to the Appalachian Trail Conservancy headquarters in Harpers Ferry WV. Hiker # 464 for 2019. She started as hiker #893 at Amicola Falls in GA.

    20190601_095157.jpg
Even a bigger deal. Hiking on the trail can be mind numbing monotonous. Step after step, mile after mile, mountain after mountain, week after week, and now month after month. You realize what a small spec you are in the enormity of the universe. You feel alone. If you happen to be from a different culture, you're even more alone. The local diner doesn't sell Vietnamese comfort food. She's not the first Vietnamese person to try to complete the trail, but she might be the first Vietnamese woman to get this far (anybody know?). Her heart just melted when she heard her native language. What are the odds of bumping into an active Vietnamese hiking group that actually knew what a "thru-hiker" is?

    20190602_120038.jpg
They made arrangements to pick her up later that day. Brought her home. Bathed her. Brought her to a real Vietnamese restaurant. Later a different trail angel gave her a hotel room. Totally unscheduled stop in Harpers Ferry WV. She's glowing.

    output006.jpg
Amtrak only touches the trail in a few locations. Little sight seeing. That looks like the Supreme Court Building in Washington DC

A stop like that can really buoy the spirits.

She's passed halfway. Since I live right off the trail, invited her over. I went to the store and got her some trail goodies and food that cannot be mailed. @Lode came over and we had steak, meatloaf, turkey, cucumber and onion salad, and other fresh fruits and veggies. She spent the night in a real bed and spent the rainy day chilling and I took her on a tour of our small village. Hit the grocery store up for a resupply. She figured out a cool alternative to sleep on some private property(with permission), that way she doesn't have to do the whole Cumberland Valley crossing in one day. I believe @designtom is meeting her for a camp out and company. She's really stoked about running into some more PA bushcrafters as she goes through the commonwealth(especially anyone wanting to hike along for a section). She's very appreciative for all the support from everyone here.
I am having pc issues and can't upload photos right now, but I think she is going to send them to Tom and maybe he can post.

Had a light day on Monday, so I drove out to Carlisle PA, and saw Christine. Delivered some new shoes that @Lode made possible. Cooked a real meal.

    20190610_182850.jpg
Christine scored a 400 person tent through her telephone canvassing skills (disassembly crew starting at 7:45 am next morning); so rise and shine. It was great, until after the storm blew through. Wind gusts in the 25 mph region made the aluminum skeleton rattle, side curtains sweep against the ground, and such a general clamor that sleep was impossible. Looked good on paper.

    20190610_131345.jpg
New shoes (third pair so far). Thanks @Lode.

When slow cooked in a dutch oven ....... award winning.

Also works as a single pot meal on an MSR

    Uh oh

    Week 13 summary: 100.9 miles
    1036.4 starting point
    1057.0 PA 16
1072.3 Fayetteville at Trail of Hope Hostel
1092.2 Pine Grove Furnace State Park (couldn't finish the gallon of ice cream)
    1111.6 @NattyBo
1115.7 PA 641 (Trindle Rd.) Nero day
    1137.3 Duncannon, PA

If anybody is looking for an excuse to go hiking this weekend.

    Here's my crystal ball predictions

1148.6 Peters Mt. Shelter (pic) Fri 6/14 am
1166.1 Raush Gap Shelter (pic) Possibly Fri 6/14 evening (or not)
1183.5 501 Shelter (pic) Possibly Sat 6/15 evening (or not)
1198.6 Eagle’s Nest Shelter (pic) Possibly Sun 6/16 evening (or not)
1207.2 Port Clinton/Hamburg/Cabelas supply run, shower, etc ? Mon 6/17 (or not)

    304917.jpg

    20190608_174130.jpg
Christine knew that this was a "danger noodle". She asked me if I wanted a picture of "the copperhead". Sure ......... Uh, that's definitely a timber rattler. Upon requests for more details, "well, it did have a white tip on it's tail". Learning new things every day.

    20190608_172411.jpg
Three months to see this post. I think she was expecting fireworks to shoot out of something. Next.

    20190610_192402.jpg
Christine thought it was funny to use the new shoe box as a cooking tool. Improvise, adapt, overcome ........... well, maybe it isn't that dramatic, but I'm constantly looking for "outside the box" solutions.

    20190608_184915.jpg
Ice cream challenge at the halfway point didn't go the way she planned (but nobody puked, so hike on)

Christine has about two dozen trail angels who have discovered that she's in a spot that we'd like her not to be in. Fortunately, it's the kind of problem that can be solved with a bit of an investment, and we've already got two thirds of it figured out. Fundraising has slowed down during the weekend, and we're looking for a bit more help. PM me if interested in joining the BCUSA 2019 Appalachian Trail thru hiker support team.

So... kinda sorta averaging 15 miles/day? Ted says it's 58 miles to Water Gap, so maybe 3 days to our area...

I didn’t get up to the AT in northwestern New Jersey this week as I planned (stupid storms), but I think I would have missed @ChocolateSpatula? anyway.
Glad to see she is still trucking. I was able to send her support though. I hope it can help.

GPS showed her at Wind Gap last... guess that means she's NE of there. PM inbound.

Actually she's already in the area of Delaware Water Gap. She's heading towards Mohican Center today (about 10 miles), and then may or may not meet up with me there, or a bit north late afternoon, depending on what she winds up planning with friends of hers who are also in the area. I'm just remaining flexible.

Well, in an interesting twist of events, it appears Ted and I are hosting TWO thru-hikers tonight! Chocolatespatula is traveling with a friend who begged her to ask on her behalf for a shower and a yard to sleep in (she will be welcome on the living room couch if she wants :).

Leaving around 3:30 to pick up our guests.
Wish us luck. Hopefully Christine's judgement in friends is good  :D

Our lovely guests are snuggled up for a good night's rest. We fed them with good food, and they are showered, laundered and charged. Ted will drop them back on trail early morning. Rocket was a pleasure to meet and the two are good company for each other. @ChocolateSpatula? Doesn't need anything right now, except continued encouragement. No more care packages for now. She's doing well and will be only walking 3 miles before getting off-trail for another visit with friends tomorrow.
