After my '03 Montero died an early death by transmission failure in October I'm finally back into a cheap 4x4 for trips into the woods. A '98 Nissan Pathfinder with about 162k.

And for when I need to go farther or faster... Not really a "bushcraft vehicle" as we'd probably define it but on the first weekend I had it I was already camping out of the back of it.

I'm afraid not. Since I was not used to dual sports, having come from a Harley background, I bought a KLX250S with the 351 kit in it, then I went to a 2013 DRZ, which I still have. It is my avatar picture over there. I have only done one longish trip on it, down to Florida. About 800 miles round trip. I like it. I am sure the BMW would be a bit less buzzy at high speed, but I don't care about riding the interstate on a bike anymore anyway. I like the back, dirt and forest service roads. Can't camp on the interstate anyway.

I hear you. My Tiger is perfect for the long trips I am trying to get into. Did a nice trip up to the Green mountains and then down to the berkshires a week ago. The GF was on her TW200, but it was not up for the mountains on the state roads. I think she is looking towards a Tiger too, or an Africa Twin. There are two for sale down the road here, so we shall see what happens there.

I was recently fired, so I am toying with the idea of going for a "full time" trip on my bike.

Sounds like you are turning that into a great opportunity! Let's keep in touch about doing some rides or at least meeting up for some camping.

Definitely! It's just one of those things life throws at you sometimes. Gotta roll with the punches, however they come.

Just say when. I have time these days. Offer goes for anyone really. Just message me or call if you have my number. several of you do. I am down for an overnighter or two whenever.

I haven't been fired, but IA Woodsman is now involved with the the store, so after I make sure that the new software is running smoothly, I am going to take a roadtrip on the DRZ. I have a few things left to do on the bike, then sorting through gear and deciding what I am going to take. I still have to admin the board, so I need to figure out how to efficiently carry a laptop to also use for editing video. I want to start doing more videos. I see a lot of videos of motocamping that leave out the camping portion.

Pelican makes backpacks that have an integrated hard case. They are pretty sweet. Heavy but sweet. Might not be a bad option if you are willing to split for one.

Just got myself a new truck,
    needed that extra storage space.
Thought it would be the right thing for New Mexico sagebrush and cactus.
I live in hilly country : minute 2:40
Took some practice to get unstuck.

Yeah, I know, NM looks kinda like Egypt in spots.
    Hope you like it :4:

I have been a Jeep guy forever, but I needed something with a lot more power so I am now rocking a '99 Durango with a 360ci v8. I really like this truck a lot.

Well I have a different truck now. My '95 Chevy, listed earlier in this thread, was totaled by someone not paying attention! I was looking to get something of similar age but I came across a deal I couldn't pass on for the truck below. It'll do fine for my outdoor needs.

I found some new wheels off of a Tacoma on Craigslist for a song and the newly discontinued (therefore 1/2 price) 265/70/17 (32x10.5) Goodyear all terrains.
A 1.5" daystar lift and rola vortex roof basket are coming with the money I saved on tires.

    IMG_1337.JPG

I also took off the running boards and front mud flaps and added window vents for better condensation control while sleeping in it.
I live in the woods full time now and this truck is my "plan b" if everything else falls apart. It has a lot of potential.

I've gone through my share 0f 4x4's,three were pickup trucks(Chevy's)one was an IH Scout, and then there was my Kia Sportage.I bought the Sportage so I could haul my kayak on the roof, and took that thing everywhere from Cape Cod to Assateague State Park, and the Pocono mountains.Mostly I took it to New Jersey to camp and kayak.Had to sell it because we couldn't afford to keep two cars, and my wife though we should keep our Dodge Intrepid.(piece of junk)because my mom gave it to us.It didn't make sense to me because the Kia was in better shape and had less miles.Well the Dodge was stolen just last December 2016,they being as the police told us,an easy car to steal. The car was found and with the damage done, the insurance company totaled it.We had just put about $1000 into it,between a new starter, battery, alternator, brakes,,and repairs to the coolant system.Well the insurance company's sending us a check for it,amounting to only $1600,about what work we put into it.So I told my wife I was looking at a Jeep Patriot Sport 4x4,with a $7995 price tag.The sales rep said we could finance it for $1600 down, and $150 a month. It's in pretty good shape inside and out, even with new tires.Since my wife feels bad for me from having to sell my Kia,we can put into consideration on purchasing the vehicle. No doubt that would make me very happy, and we'd have a vehicle that could get us around in the snow(and off road). It wouldn't make sense to buy a car for $1600 as we'd be buying another piece of junk.Hopefully it'll work out.

Posted before, but Here are my 3 bushcraft vehicles. If any of these 3 fail to get me where I'm going, I have two strong legs and hiking boots to take me the rest of the way! The Subaru is limited mostly by tires (all-season passenger tires) and ground clearance. I have a Fatbike (26x4" tires compared to 26x2.1" on the above mountain bike) arriving tomorrow. For winter, I have snowshoes. Have not used in 2 years, time and low snowfall.

Still debating buying a newer ('14-'16) Subaru this summer. This one is long ago paid off though...

Starter is out on my truck, 1996 ford ranger. Awesome vehicle that's taken me on MANY excursions and expeditions. With that being out of commission for the time being I've getting around on my nike air natives, aka my feet.

Sun To The North: My Expedition Vehicle & Trailer

My 2005 4Runner has these mods: longer travel suspension, sliders, dual batteries, heavy duty skid plate, air compressor under the hood, dual batteries, Engel 45 fridge, full sized roof rack, ARB awning

When I feel like glamping I bring along my off-road trailer. It has full suspension, electric brakes, dual batteries, solar charging, 20 gallon stainless steel water tank, Fiamma awning, roof top tent, two 2.5 gallon gas cans and a large cargo box for the cooking gear, chairs, etc.

Well I just happened to pick up my 2008 Jeep Patriot Sport today(1/24/17)which I got with my insurance check.I financed it of course.Back in mid December my junker Dodge Intrepid was stolen(there's a car theft ring going in my area)and when it was found,it was totaled by the insurance company. They didn't give me alot, some of it went towards impoundment of vehicle($400).It wouldn't have made sense to buy another beat up car for $1500,so that's why we financed a vehicle. It's in excellent shape, new tires, privacy windows,CD player(gotta have my tunes)and more.I love the smooth ride too.Didn't take it off road yet,the weather's been crappy, alot of rain this winter around eastern PA.
