FE144188-A4A1-45F3-AA1C-7E8145390B22.jpeg Last 8-10 years I seem to always have something new to me to try. Last 3-5 I seem to have multiple choices. So for me, Im behind!! :confused:o_O;)

This year I have another 357 Maxi Id like to christen. (Probably will not. Get to it)

I have a 350 Legend I need to dedicate more time too as I would like to use it.

I have the new to me Norma Magnum too. This one is so far and away too much its really silly for deer and bears here. BUT, I still think its gonna be my “Field gun” up in the Northern Kingdom.
We are seeing ten times the bear numbers we have before. More this past year than last too!! We had a sow and a couple cubs last two seasons. This year my buddy didnt see a single whitetail during his ten days there for Family VK. Thats daily walks at sunrise. BUT he had to hi-tail it one AM as his vishla spooked a bear he never did see but herd the poppin and growls!! He/they say 13 Bears and more than a few multiple times. The trail cameras we leave on the property to “watch things” have bears on the deck nearly weekly. The one camera has been dead for months for taking so many pictures!! SO. Its a good chance Norma will cut her teeth on a junior member of what she was bought for!

Then there is my Grendel. She got a refinished stock and is SUCH A AMAZING shooter!! This one will see use as my primary this year.

What are you taking in the woods this season?

I'd like to get my 1895 Winchester out there But if not I'll go with my tired and true ADL. Either option is a .30-06, ADL likes 165 grain BallisticTips and the 1895 will be 220g CorLokts.

I'm planning on taking my short barrel 6.5x55 SM for bear, but may take my 7mm-08. For deer, it will be my Mossberg Patriot chambered in 6.5 CM unless it's bad weather...then it will be the 7mm-08.

Same old 30-06 but I have been thinking about a Ruger Ranch in .450 Bushmaster for my swamp stand.

Two different guns, depending on how things play out. First, for the mule deer rifle hunt, I will be taking the Savage Lightweight Hunter in .308. It was my retirement gift to myself, and hasn't been on a hunt yet - because I didn't retire for a couple more years after I bought it. :D
If I don't score during that hunt, I'll be carrying the Ruger Match Champion 10mm that I bought as a retirement gift to myself :D for the remainder of the short-range weapon hunt, which runs late into November.

My only rifle tags for this year are muzzle loader deer and antelope. I'll most likely use a .50 and a round ball.

I know this is the firearm side of things, but I'm in New Jersey and there is no rifle hunting of deer. I think there's a short shogun season, but I really didn't like a 400 grain bullet at high speeds. That whole "equal and opposite reaction" thing was a little sporty for my taste. Tried it a few times and sold that barrel and the remaining ammo.

If I can get out this year, it'll be a nice peaceful walk in the woods with a 45 year old Bear Grizzly recurve.

Only ever shot a few deer with a round ball. Back in the day its all that was legal here. I remember the first one was not pleasant. Thought it a good shot but was a bit high. Missed spine and apparently most of the lungs. Second. Third shots final made swiss cheese and about ruined the quality of the meat. I do mostly blame me and my shooting at the time it was the ball. Next deer was same exact broadside shot but that deer died as if pole axed as I apparently hit the spine. We where able to use conicals next season and a MAXI ball was alot better then the MAXI HUNTERS where softer and better yet!!

Lately I only BP hunt if the freezer has room as our BP is late.

I've killed deer and elk with a .50 maxi, deer with a .50 ball and deer, elk and antelope with a .54 ball. They all worked pretty good if they were properly hit.

This year I might try a Lee .452 255 grain wadcutter in my .45 for the deer. Depends on how it shoots. Just ordered a Lee .451 sizer.

I'll be running one of 3 rifles given the range and target.

6.5 creedmore Savage 22" threaded barrel suppressed for anything over 125 yards. On the pasture / wheat field...

223 howa 1500, 20" barrel suppressed for the 90-125 yard shot from the blind

I normally hunt deer with a longbow, but I'm recovering from an injury, so it's modern firearms this year. Here on my property, I'll use a Marlin 1894c and GP100 both in .357. If I venture out into the National Forest, I'll use my Ruger M77Mk2 in .308.

I plan on hunting almost exclusively with 3 or so different airguns. A .308 Texan SS, a .300 custom WAR Flex, and a .45 Texan SS. My tags let me hunt year round and day or night, but I’ve been waiting for it to cool off and for the blueberries to start putting off the last round of growth for the season. I’ll probably slip out this weekend.

I plan on using my .54 cal flintlock smooth bore as much as possible this year, used my rifled .62 last year and it hit like a sledgehammer, I only use round ball in my traditional firearms, I’d like to take some game with a Pedersoli trapdoor carbine I picked up also, nice handy little rifle, loaded with home cast and real black of course.

06 for me again but trying some different bullets. Plan is to shoot 200 grain Woodleighs for elk and then switch to 130 ttsx Barnes bullets for the rest of the deer season.

CVA Optima for ML season - Wicked Ridge Raider crossbow for archery season - Henry Big Boy carbine .44 magnum for modern gun season. Just did some horse trading (figuratively) for a Howa 1500 mini action in 7.62x39. If I have that up and running, I will likely give it a chance at an outing. Of course, there are always pigs to shoot too!:dblthumb:

I'm sure my 20 inch Tikka 260 will get the call.

I'm also putting together a 6.5 grendel Howa Mini action for my son to shoot. It will be his first deer rifle.

Ruger American in .308 because it's the only thing I have that would be suitable for deer. Though I don't know if I'll manage to get out this year. Too much life happening lately.

Winchester 94 in 32 WSP as always.

The big change is shifting from factory ammo (CoreLoct) to handloads.

'Course, I suck at still hunting and we always hunt up high in the thick stuff, so the deer have little to fear from me.

    Very nice first rifle!!

I have one and mine is a shooter!! I just re did the Boyds stock I bought last Christmas. I like it allot more now. I liked the grip but disliked the wide forend and color. It is a lam and they are all different. Well it came across as bad plywood to me. So after I re shaped it I painted it!

It's a rotation between the 30-30 leverguns, Ruger 338 RCM, and the Ruger GSR 308. Pretty ordinary but during season I can run into elk or bear possibly.

I'm no longer serious about it, as I only go out to recreate.

I basically did the same thing but I went with the adjustable Boyd's stock. This way he can grow into it a little bit.

I agree the Boyd's stock is my favorite either but it was about 1/5 the cost of my MDT chassis I have on my 260. As long as it will shoot 1.5 MOA or so I will be a happy camper

You must have been reading my mind today. I need to decide on what to do about the 30-30 and 45-70. I would like to have either for woods hunting or close range shooting. I have decided to break out the 243 again this year and do more hiking and exploring while out hunting. The 243 I have is just over 7 lb with scope so its almost a perfect setup for hiking with. I haven't decided if I am going to tryout the new 6.5 or stick with my trusted 7mm-08. Either way both rifles are close to 11 pounds so I won't be doing a lot of hiking with them.

Probably use my Cimarron 1873 Sporting Rifle in .44 WCF for rifle season,

    1873R.jpg

and my George Dech .50 longrifle for flintlock season,

    GLDech_Longrifle.jpg

and maybe my Euroarms Magnum Cape Gun 12 gauge with a patched ball for the early muzzleloader season.

Me too ... too many kids lol. I am toying with getting a .350L upper as a right shoulder injury a few years back has me unable to sight in my rifled, 12 GA slug gun. Looking for a soft shooter. But to be honest I’ll probably just get dies, components and “work up a load, and then not shot anything but paper with it...lol”. Haven’t hunted anything but birds the last few years (way less of time commitment than whitetails)

I envy you guys who have the time to dedicate to the solitude of the hunt.

I think I'll use eather my 6.5 creedmoor or 308 Winchester. Went to the rifle range and both are both sited in for last season, right on target. Both rifles shoot inch groups and out to 500 hundred yards it's a toss up.

This will be the first year in a loooong time that I wont be taking a lever gun into the woods for deer.
This year I'm giving the little peashooter M77 .223 a shot.
My wife will still be using her Model 94 though.

deer 2018.jpg My 77/44 for 2nd season party hunts (worked well last year). I tree-stand hunt 1st season on my land so either the Encore with the .45/70 barrel or the Encore with the .357 Max barrel. I'm in a straight-wall state...

Usually my Great Northern longbow and arrows I make myself, but if I go out during the Indiana gun season it'll be with my Beretta shotgun and slugs. Be the time our gun season rolls around I'm usually chasing coyotes anyway. One of these days I'm going to buy me a good deer rifle though.
