I consider myself to be very fortunate to be able to take custom knives to the woods , use them and then tell other people about. For the last several months I have been using this knife from John Deering.

Like all the knives I review I have used it very hard. The Sami Puukko has built many fires, shelters, and been used for everyday tasks. The O1 tool steel has really kept an edge and has been easy to sharpen. This is a testament to the heat treat that John has applied to this fine knife. This blade also brakes from the common thinking that you need to have a thick blade for strength in the field. Coming in at a thin 3/32" the scandi ground blade makes short work of butchering and feather sticks. There was a lot of flex when I drove it into a tree and stood on it, but the knife came out unscathed.

When you get a great knife like this it is easy to recommend it to other folks. If you get a chance to pick up one of John's don't hesitate.

    Great review IA!

I'm glad to see that the 3/32" Sami held up to your hard use. I have one in the same steel with stabilized wood handles. Love it, but to be honest, I have not used mine as hard... it has been dedicated to carving and food prep chores. The 3/32" excels at the finer work and it looks like you proved it can hold up to some heavier chores. Definitely a under utilized steel choice IMHO.

I haven't used it heavily for batoning or using the tip to break apart wood for fear of ruining the tip; since the tip gets utilized so much for my spoon carvings. How did the tip fair? From the pictures it looks needle sharp.

I was pleasantly surprised at how well the 3/32" worked.
