First I want to say, I don't feel well enough to run it, so if everyone likes the idea and can agree on terms, feel free to elect someone to run it.

I had this idea rolling around in my head about knife trading. I was thinking of calling it.
    "Blind Man's Knife Trade"
or something? It could be annual, biannual, continuous, or whatever.

The idea is similar to the Secret Santa we do, except only knives. Everyone thats in would put their name down the elected host would pair you up. You trade information and mail each other a knife.

Heres the fun part. You don't know what the other person is sending. It might be a SAK, Might be a Mora, Maybe a Gossman, a butter knife, spyderco, an old Case, a utility blade, a knife they made, Turley, gas station knife. It can be fixed, folder, axe, saw, or a combination, whatever. Yes because its a "Blind Man's Knife Trade". It can be used or you can order or buy something new still in a box

There is no set/requirement of money value or obligation and nobody gets upset with what they get. No guilt that what you got cost more than what you sent, no frustration that what you sent cost more than what you got. Preferably you trade something someone would at least want, right? Maybe you send two, one for real and one for a joke? Idk. Its up to each person what they decide to send forward.

If its a bi annual thing then you either keep what you got and next time trade something else, or if you didn't like what you got last time you trade it forward.

Later there could be a thread showing what you got?

If it we're my show, it would only be open to supporting members, and I'd have a few statements in bold about if you enter you must follow through with a trade, second nobody gets upset because they felt the trade was "unfair" in value or condition, etc, etc or something. That way there's no butthurt later and it stays fun....which is the point.

The point isn't to enter just to get rid of your trash, to be mean, only in hopes of getting something better. But to have a good time, to make someone's day, to help someone have something they haven't tried or didn't have, or just to be funny. Hey, you might get a butter knife, who knows. :)

There should be NO "I want this" want lists. You shouldn't know what your getting, that's part of the fun of it. Think Secret Santa and Dirty Secret Santa kinda thing.:41::16::29:

    One thing...
If you can't hold up to your end of the bargain, you can't participate in the next one.

Anyway, I've been thinking about it for a couple days. Talk amongst yourselves to work out the details. If you have been a member for some time and feel like running it the mention in your comments "I wouldn't mind hosting" and everyone can vote whose going to be allowed to work out the details and run it.

Tag someone you think would enjoy this or you might like to see participate (although who you get should probably still be random imo).

I hope this is fun, thats the whole idea as well as generosity and sharing.

Sounds like a good time, not to mention it might introduce you to a tool you've never thought about buying before.

I love the idea. Plus, if it is open to Supporters only.... it might prove a good way to encourage more people to be Supporters of this forum. :dblthumb:

Also, if you enter and get a knife, you shouldn't sell it for profit, . You either keep it, pass it forward in the next round, or just send it forward to someone you know that could use it, or in the pass it forward thread Skab has going.

This is supposed to be fun and enjoyable, not get peoples feathers ruffled and ruin it.

I can see through my magical internet portal people getting up, rummaging through their knife drawer already and pondering the possibilities of what to give and sitting in front on their PC thinking about what they might get, and smiling the whole time. :)

Just think, you might give something they could never or would never purchase for themselves, or maybe show them why you like blades that cost a little more, or why you like moras, or introduce them to scandi, or their first spyderco, or traditional folder, why silky or bahco(sp) saws are popular, share some axe or hatchet love, maybe introduce them to a maker they've never heard of of thought of trying, or something you made that they find useful and treasure. Or just make them smile or roll their eyes.

Maybe you write a little somethng, a story about how you acquired it, who made it for you, what you made it from, history of the company, why its popular, why you like it, that way they understand why you sent it.

I'm in. :) I have some nice vintage USA steel I can pass along. For sure. I'll help manage it too if needed.
    Let's roll with it. :)

And I will indeed accept a Turley, or even a turkey. :)

I think the honor system should be fine, as far as sending a decent knife and not sticking someone with a plastic butter knife. :) (Pun intended) I just might have an idea of a way to keep that from happening. :)

Great iddea @Wasp . Super way to spice up the summer doldrums. :)

This would give me a chance to get rid of my highly collectible Danbury Mint Dale Earnhardt Signature Lockback complete with collectible tin.
It kinda puts me in the mind of a game we played Knife Drop. Two people would each hold a mystery blade in their hand on the count of 3 they’d open their hands and exchange knives.

I’m in. Sounds like a good time! I have a dog, so I already have some chewed up stuff, and I’m pretty positive I wouldn’t baton with a turkey. Sounds pretty messy. Otherwise I’m easy. When do the festivities start?

    Love this idea @Wasp .

Not sure I have a knife to trade but I'll offer my 2 cents. Regardless of the intention of feelings, the guy who puts a lot of thought and heart into it and trades away a nice knife (like a BHK for example) and gets an Ozark Trail Folder in return is going to be pretty bummed lol... maybe have value ranges (below 50, 50-100, 100-200, and over 200...I think those ranges keep the quality about the same....
    - to keep the interest going and to make it so that one guy isnt doing all the work, make it similar to the Gift-it-thread. That way if someone gets something that ends up not getting used or liked (for example- im not a fan of puukos. I am not saying they arent good knives but they dont do anything for me aesthetically....though I've never used one so my mind isnt set in stone against them...let's say I recieved one in trade and didnt like it, I could offer it back up as a new trade the very next day (or week ).

So it would go something like this....

STOPHAMMERSTOP posts "hey I have a trade offer in the 100-200 range"

LOWLANDER replies "I have one in that range as well and accept the trade"

They exchange addresses and work out shipping details....
Lowlander sent his ESEE6 and STOPHAMMERSTOP loved it and kept it....but the beloved Pink Large Griptilian that STOPHAMMERSTOP sent LOWLANDER wasnt something LOWLANDER cared for...but because it was in the same value range he could offer it up and try his luck at something else..... (btw the names and events in this story were completely made up and in no way represent or are based on anyone on here -i picked you two because your always good sports about ribbing)

Not saying people HAVE to trade only with those in the same price range, but at least they have the option

This probably goes against the whole idea and point of the thing but I just wanted to add my opinion b/c I hate to see people get stuck (pun intended)...
Im by no means a "participation trophy for everyone" type but in events like these it feels good to know everyone walks away with a smile....again just my 2 pennies

I thoroughly like this idea and would be in.

The idea of trade value ranges is good too... Perhaps add another one for "homemade/handmade" as well.

I agree with a lot of this. I’d like to participate, but won’t. I’m afraid that it will end up like the swap tables at Jake’s Flea Market and a bunch of Pakistan Damascus Bowie’s and gas station boot knives will get passed around!

I’ve participated in similar pass arounds in the past and it always seems like everyone pitches in their junkiest crap and oddball outdoor gear that no one would ever use.

Great idea in theory but not worth the bummer.

Its Its not that that didn't occur to me. Heres the thing, unless its straight from the store, knife values, like anything else are subjective based on personal opinion and several other factors. A knife I believe is worth $200 you believe is worth $115, and so on. Also, if someone puts in something they spent two weeks of after hours work making, and although the materials only cost them $30, but its fantastic and beautiful (or rugged and awesome), how much is that knife worth?

I think threads where people say what they want for Christmas gifts is pretty silly my self, and a little self assuming, not everyone has the same abilities, standards, or expectations of giving and receiving. So what someone might want might not be what I can afford. Or I might have some REALLY nice stuff that didn't cost much because of who or where I got it and now I'm not even sure I want to let it go because it might not meet their standards, so I buy them a cute fleece instead and call it done.

I've always found the best gifts aren't what I wanted or asked for, but when the other person took the time and effort and forethought to decide for themselves what they thought I'd enjoy. Its hard to be disappointed when you leave your expectations wide open.
If I buy lunch today, and you but lunch tomorrow, are you going to be upset if I paid for McDonald's and you paid for 5Guys Burgers and theres a big difference in cost? Or are you going to just enjoy having lunch with me and what you got to eat? :)

That's why I suggested it be a blind trade from the beginning. Its more than just about what you get. There's already a trade blanket where you can trade dollar for dollar what you feel is fair. If this works out, sooner or later you'll get something you like.

How many threads can you remember in the last six months where someone showed what someone else just gifted them a knife with no return obligation? Or Knife Fairy threads? Probably dozens. Thats not to mention the private ones.

I'm not saying I don't appreciate your opinion or agree with you on some level. I was just trying to figure out something for fun and sharing. It doesn't have to be your favorite knives, axe, etc. Just one you have you arent using that you think someone might enjoy.
