Hey all. The Oklahoma Feb meet will be on the 9th-11th at the Blue River.

We will be shooting for area 3-6, but as it is first come first serve that can be iffy. Last year we ended up at the back of the big loop on the east side of the river. For any new folks, I will bring a big sign that will say 'Bushcraft' to set out so you don't have to walk up to random groups of campers lol.

These coordinates will take you right up to the river crossing. 34.322736, -96.597096
On the map below its just north of the disabled fishing access in the Orange Blue River Campground zone.

Alert: There is no fee for these campsites, but you do need to have an Oklahoma fishing license. For out of staters...I'm looking at you TX, looks like a one day non resident license is 1$5 and 6 day is 35$ with a 3$ charge if you do it online. (thanks for looking that up @fire65 )

That being said this is a stocked trout river, and several of us plan on fishing a bunch. There is also public access hunting, it looks like rabbit and crow will be in season.

For more information, check out the link below.
    Blue River Info

For those of you that can't make it, stay tuned, there will be another in early March!

Sounds like fun fingers crossed I can pull it off. That next week 13th is one of my boys 7th birthday so if I can make it happen then I’ll be bringing him as a birthday trip!

Well I got the official Ok from the boss (wife) and I’m not working that weekend. As I said it’s right before my younger boys 7th so I’m going to be bringing just him along for a sort of father son birthday party!

Is this an open invite? I'm a on and off bushcrafter but I could sure use the interaction and some time outdoors.

Awesome. I'll bring my boy, we'll see how much trouble they can get into!

    Good deal!

For any and all new folks, yes, this is open invite! It's pretty low key. Because of the trout several of us will probably fish a lot. If anyone has any skills or project you are wanting to work on, feel free to share! We love to learn new things, and don't mind sharing what little we know.

Do we want to have a pre-blanket listing in this thread just for this event? So that we know what we are dealing with, in order to bring cash or suitable trade items? or just bring adequate cash to purchase everything? haha.

We can set up a time, or if the weather is good you can just set it out. I've got some stuff to move as well, plus a free box I'll bring.

I would love if there's a trading blanket. I might be looking to spend a little on a nice knife soon. Though I have little to trade myself, I do have a few excess items. Nothing super nice though.

    It's also my birthday, lol.

Just now figured out how to turn on the RSVP...guess it's after the thread is created, not while you're creating the thread. I did create a poll at the top of thread for this as well. Click on the 'votes' and you can see who's planning on coming.

Just a light spinning outfit would do you you can talk to Scotty at the blue river store about lures and purchase most of what's productive there. Also of anyone needs license and trout stamp the store is no longer selling them so you'll need to get them elsewhere but they still have all the tackle like they always have.

I think images always help people get excited so here are a few of the blue river I looked up. I'm really excited. Can I fish from the bank or would I need wading boots?

I fished from the bank last time. You should be able to get an OK fish licence online, but walmart and local shops work too.

What sort of fishing is it? Obviously not bobber. It is lure and drag? I've done trevel hooks and 'jerk' fishing with Salmon. Haha.

I may try to make it up for this. Not 100% yet but should know within the next day or two.. I had to miss both the TN meet, and the Hill Country meet, which I had planned to attend, so I'm trying to make up for it. :p

I was just digging a little more regarding the fishing license requirement and from what I found, it looks like you have to have a license covering the whole stay. So three 1 days for $45, or one 6 day for $35, or an annual license for $55.

But I did find that if you don't want to fish (like me), you can get the Non-Resident Conservation Passport instead, and it's cheaper. $15 for 3 days, or $26 for the calendar year. Some of the links with additional info:

    License costs:
    http://www.eregulations.com/oklahoma/fishing/license-costs/

    http://newsok.com/article/5457394

Map of the Blue River area:
    https://www.wildlifedepartment.com/maps/Blue River WMA.pdf

I will confirm if I will make it as soon as possible!

One thing I didn't see, are fires allowed? Are the spots walk-in only, or can you drive up to them? How are the trees (for hammocks)?

That will help determine what I bring. :)

Nearly all of the spots are drive up. Fires are allowed and I've never had trouble finding a hammock spot and I will be bringing on myself.

Thanks for digging deeper on that. The additional cost of out of state folks is one of the reasons we don't meet here on a regular basis, but it's fun for a change of pace location.

Yeah, I figured that since it's still so early in the year, the annual (whether fishing or just the passport) aren't too bad as long I make a couple more trips over 2018. And it's just a little over 2 hours from my home, so that's doable.

You make a great point on the annual. I may just do that, it’ll give me a reason to get up there for any other meets t00. You know so I get my money’s worth out of the license.

Hey guys, I’m relatively new to getting out and about with bushcrafter groups. I’m a retired military guy along with being a long time outdoorsman. I love learning new things with bushcraft and meeting likeminded enthusiasts, so looking forward to seeing you all. I’m Rob and live in Texarkana Tx :)

Yes it is. If you look on the highway going east out of Millburn heading towards tishomingo there is a road about 3 miles west of tish called blue river road you take that north all the way into the blue river wma and you can see all of the park

Hmm. I don't have a ton to trade but here's some items I might have. If you are super interested let me know and I'll make sure not to forget it.
    • 4lb Wool Blanket
    • Some Stainless Steel Cookware
    • Solo Stove + 1800 Pot
    • Leather and Polyester/Wool Bomber Jacket - Medium Guys
    • 30-06 Rifle (if that's legal to trade? not sure) that may have a spring issue in the clip area.
    • .44 blackhawk magnum
    • Eno Hammock System (Just got a new hammock system)
    • Casting Net
    • Dehydrator
    • Canvas Bag with Metal External Frame (
What I'd be looking for to check out or trade...
    • Knives from AA Forge or Fiddleback. Short to Avg size, drop tip, with plashed metal and wooden handles.
    • Good quality headlamps
    • UL or Modern Backpacks - I already got a kick butt Frost River but need a modern bag for long distances
    • Stuff sacks/compression sacks
    • Possibly (if gun trading is allowed) a more powerful handgun
    • Sling shot/Bows possibly as I'm wanting to get into some small game hunting.
    • Fishing Rod - I don't have a rod/reel but been thinking of buying one since my old one broke. I have quite a lot of tackle. Would love to catch some trout.

I’ll try to make it out if work allows. Rabbit is in season still, right? Always wanted to try to get one with a bow.

Wish I could make it this time, sounds like you have a lot of people coming. I have some family obligations and can’t make this one.

Incidentally, someone asked about fires- the campground in is Johnston Co, right? There’s currently a burn ban at the time I’m posting this- but maybe it’ll be lifted if we get that precipitation they’ve been talking about tomorrow or the next day.

Oooh. Thank you for sharing this information. Sorry you won't be able to make it. Not being able to have a ground fire sucks.

I probably can't make it up Friday unless I can get my business partner to cover for half the day. Looks like it's going to be chilly! 28 with a chance of rain. I love a weather challenge.

I got a new hammock and UQ coming in from @Pharmer on Wednesday to try out.

I might also be interested in selling/trading my ENO setup if anyone is wanting a cheap entry level hammock.

I don't know if this will work here but this is the Facebook notification from the wildlife dept. Fires seem to be good under conditions so bring a 5 gallon bucket
