This is a challenge to get us out shooting, even though ammo is in short
supply. If you have children, neighbors or friennds who want to shoot, post their targets as well.
Shooting fun is for everyone. :)

Using a small bore (22 RF) rifle OR a pellet rifle OR a BB gun, shoot 3
shots at each of six bullseyes. We have a PDF file of the target that
can be printed out, and the range for this is 25 FEET.

[The attachment A32 is the PDF target suggested for this challenge.]

It is suggested that you shoot 2 groups standing, 2 groups
    kneeling, and 2 groups setting.

Mark/ score each group, and post a picture of each shooters target here in the
    thread.
[Edit to Add]: Scoring- the center white is an "X", and the thin black around it a ten- so a hit in the center black is a ten, in the white is a ten- X.
The remaining rings are 9 and 8 rings in the black, then a 7 ring and 6 ring. I do not count hits outside the last ring. :)

When a shot touches or cuts a ring, it goes the higher ring count value.

Multiple entries allowed- just make a new post.

Extra credit for explaining what you learn about your own shooting from
    the exercise.

NOTE: This is like the old postal matches- everyone is on their own
honor to shoot at the right distance, and score each of their targets
    correctly.

Hope this helps a few of us get out the pellet gun or 22 and shoot a few
groups , and maybe recruit a new shooter or three while doing it.

    =============

Since this challenge was late getting posted, it seems fair to let it run until March 10th.

The March challenge will likely be out before this one ends.

Comments are welcome as to perhaps making this a quarterly event.

Ive done something like this. I can shoot standing, kneeling, sitting, and standing with gun propped. I diddly squat lying down prone. I mean embarrassing bad. My offhand was better than my prone shots. If I can get to a shooting spot I will do this again and post pics.

Remember guys and gals, pellet guns or BB guns are welcome. This is intended to be as ammo inexpensive as possible. :)

Gonna have to try this one. I'll need to knock together a pellet trap, first.

I would like to thank GreyOne for taking the time to put together the Monthly Project for February. I think this is an excellent idea and should be a lot of fun. It would be an excellent opportunity to get kids involved in shooting. Thanks again GreyOne.

I took some shots with my son’s old BB gun just to see how it still shoots. Looks like I need to do a lot more practice with it! I think I will consider this as practice and then see if I improve after practice.

    No. 1 is standing up
No. 2 is from the kneeling position
No. 3 is from the setting position

    Scoring Question

Thanks for putting this contest together. I'm going to set up a pellet range in the basement and shoot a bunch of pellets through my old Daisy this weekend. How do you want us to score the targets? Do you have a point value in mind for each ring or do you just want us to mark each shot so that they show up in the picture?

I broke out the Daisy 880 Powerline yesterday evening when I got home from work and set up a pellet trap in the basement. I would show you a picture of my range, but then the whole world would know how messy my basement is, so I'll show you a picture of the gun instead.

On to the February challenge. . . .

    Things I learned:

    1. I don't practice anywhere near enough.
    2. I've become too dependent on sandbags and shooting benches.
    3. Pellet guns in your basement are FUN!

I even took a break from my practice and got to shoot some "squirrels" with both of my girls. This is the first time either girl has gotten to actually pull a trigger. They were impressed to say the least. The tape on the glasses seemed to help a lot with looking through the scope.

Thanks for putting this challenge together. I can't remember the last time I had this much fun without leaving my house.
Maybe to much fun, while the youngest kids were down for a nap, i took advantage of Pyramid Air's 10% off Valentines Day sale and ordered myself a Crosman 1077 rifle and 1322 pistol. With the recent craziness in ammo prices, I'd been starting to get the airgun itch pretty bad anyway and a great morning of shooting without leaving the house pushed me over the edge.

EDIT: I just realized that the upper standing target should be 8 7 7 not 9 7 7 that is written on the target.

Got a chance to shoot the other day, just now got the pictures uploaded.

This is the range, and the air riflle:

    Here is the target:

I learned that my old eyes and iron sights are no longer a good combination. My setting and squatting are no longer more stable than my standing- arthritis and being fat will do that.

I need to start doing this as a regular thing, see if I can get at least a bit of iron sight skill back. :)

I am bumping this up , in hopes that we will get some more shooters to join in. The shooting is cheap and easy, and the more the merrier.

Shoot a few groups and post your target !

Blue Streak makes it's way out of the closet

    003.jpg
    I learned that:

    1. Overweight guys have a hard time keeeping their heartrate under control after pumping a MSP rifle.

    2. I need to adjust my sights to the left.

    3. I need to do this more often because it's FUN.

    4. I am a wuss who doesn't like kneeling and laying in the melting snow. (I thought I was on the Rice Crispies shooting team due to all the snap, crackle and pop noises my knees were putting out there.)

    5. I hope we can keep this as a regular activity on the forum.

Thanks G1 this is fun! I have several more airguns that I should do this with.

    Starting to Get Better

A couple of weeks of pretty steady practice, some research on the Civilian Marksmanship Program's website and a new pellet rifle all add up to some much better groups than my first target.

After reading up on the CMP website, I realized that everything I was doing to shoot kneeling, was pretty much wrong. I had 5 good shots and then ran out of breath and forced the last shot, but overall my kneeling is much improved from earlier this month.

Glad to see the participation ! I don't think this is an every month event- people would get bored- but I can promise we will plan another airgun/ rimfire match in the not to distant future.

For this match, just remind everyone, it will run until March 10. Still plenty of time to print a few targets and get busy. Most of us need the shooting practice for the off season anyway ! :)

Set up a little back stop in my basement. I'm at 24.5ft. I'm hoping that's close enough for us :D.
Pumped my 1377 up 6 pumps so it wouldn't deafen me while shooting in the confined space. It kept dropping really low. Dead center but on the bottom ring.
Then I remembered that I sighted in with 10 pumps. There's a big velocity difference there. So I'll try again tomorrow or Thursday night.
Using the red dot reminded me of why it's perfect for squirrels. But not so hot for small groups.

This was fun, thank you, I realized I need a lot more practice and also that my 40 year old Benjamin still shoots well (it was my mom's but I shot the snot out of it as a kid growing up). I have 2 targets here, one with the Benjamin, shooting with 6-7 pumps and one with the Crossman 1377 in which I shot at 6-7 pumps:

Looking forward to the next one and I will be doing more of this, I had bought a nice pellet trap and it is fun being able to shoot indoors. :)

Trying to sneak this one in by the deadline...

Hello, all. Here's my target, firing a Crosman Phantom.

    February 2013 Challenge.jpg

Overall I'm not too unhappy with the score, although I need to tighten up before small game season starts here in August.

What I learned: It's been more than fifteen years since my last official rifle qualification and I'm just now beginning to hunt, so all of my long arm shooting for the last decade and a half has been for fun. Which for me means, standing. That's just what's seemed most natural; set up a target of some sort and plink away.

The end result is that I need to practice the different shooting positions. It took me a bit of fidgeting around to feel like I had them about right, and even then they felt a little awkward (especially the kneeling, which I think is reflected in the score). Of course, in hunting these positions or some variation thereof are going to be necessary sometimes, so just ignoring them isn't an option.

By the way, that last sitting round is the result of my son choosing exactly the wrong moment to call for my attention, so I'm not too worried about that one. At least, that's my story, and I'm sticking to it. :4:

Really enjoyed this exercise, and I sure wouldn't mind if it were a regular event. Thanks.

Well, as to form, I have a confession- I left the prone position completely out of this, because I can't get down and back up on my old knees, without wallowing like a pig. Just was not gonna happen. :) Now, kneeling hurts, setting and standing are much easier, so I was quick to eliminate that prone
    position. :)

Congratulations to all of you who participated.

I know a lot of us found our skills a bit rusty, so perhaps we can do another round in a few months.

Late entries are still welcome, but no longer eligible for the trophy :) ;)

Ok. Left my camera in my locker yesterday so I had to run up and get it after work today.
I did learn that my backstop sucks. Most pellets tumbled or something when they hit and tore sideways. Something new for me.

Left most is sitting, middle is kneeling, and right is standing.
Now that I've got the basement measured out and the pressure drop for 6 vs 10 pumps I'm looking forward to the next go around.
