I've been wanting one for as long as I can remember and yesterday I pulled the trigger. I got the 10ft fishing boat which weighs in at a scant 18lbs!. Unfortunately I have to wait a good 5 months to use it. IMG_20181207_121907287_HDR.jpg

So jealous, my friend got one this spring. I want one so bad. My ortho and PT guy agree it’s the best option :18: which model did you get? Classic or New Tricks? Also, as one of the 18 lb models I am guessing you went with the carbon fiber Kevlar layup?

It's based off the classic but has slightly higher sides on it making it a little taller. It was a slightly used model that I got a great deal on. It is straight Kevlar with cherry. The carbon fiber models are 12 lbs. If you're doctor recommended it I can think of a better reason to get one lol!!

Huh... I didn’t know about Hornbecks. Yesterday I was flying into New Orleans, and looking down I was thinking it would be cool to explore the country around here by small boat, but you would really need something you could easily pull out and carry.

I was going back and forth between the 10 and 12 myself but the 10 came up for sale first:). This one has the oar locks on it for the rowboat style oars, they add a little bit of weight but are well worth it!

My biggest concern is what it will carry. I’m 225 plus multi night camping gear. I have pretty light stuff but the 280 lb capacity of the 12 is cutting it close. The new tricks at 220 isn’t enough.

Exactly!! I'm 180 and I can usually get away with around 30 lbs of gear so I'm right at the threshold. Might have to bring whiskey instead of beer:18:

I got to pick one of those up (physically lift, not 'bought') a few years ago on a portage... dude was wearing the 10lb one like a hat, while i was struggling along with a wood/canvas one... amazing construction, probably make Nessmuk a little jealous. I was impressed, but couldn't justify buying one at the time... now that i'm older... hmm...

You talked her into a DSLR, surely a canoe isn’t that much more difficult.

I got hoodwinked.. I'm the guy that uses the DSLR but I can't bring it outside with supervision...

But if I find a buyer for the tin boat then that money is canoe money...

Not being a tripper or serious paddler, I had not heard of Hornbecks. Honestly, I thought they'd cost a lot more.

    Now I wish I hadn't even looked!

If anybody wants a pig of a solo hybrid I've got an Old Town Next that suddenly looks much less appealing... :D

I bought Peter Hornbecks's first ever built carbon/kevlar layup boat (serial no. 001, 16 pounds), to make the trek from Boonville, NY to Plattsburgh NY ( the year before the North Country Canoe Trail route officially opened up, following much of the same route in NY) , a total distance of 185 miles, requiring 65 combined miles of portaging during one hot dry July week.

Plus the Hornbeck is easy to bushwhack and transport through dense woods to visit remote isolated ponds.

It can handle the weight of an average to large paddler (190 pounds) with all gear and food for a week. If you center the gear as much as possible and keep the bow light, then it will bob over waves in heavy winds instead of cutting through and as such does not tend to take on water over the relatively low freeboard bow/stern and gunwales.

    That's an epic trip!!
I'm around 180 which gives me a lot of room weight Wise for camping gear. Great advice about the weight distribution!

Nice boat! I've been drooling over the Hornbeck canoes for quite a while. One of these years I'm just going to say the heck with justifying it, and pull the trigger. We only live once right?
