4DAD61F8-C1C2-42BC-BD28-D1054AAD5121.jpeg Guys, I grew up out in the sticks. It’s where my love of the outdoors came from. But, due to the whole “adulting” thing and this “food costs money” business, I’ve been living in and around New Orleans for the past 6 years or so in apartment complexes and rental houses. Now that didn’t stop my woodsy activities, but cleaning game in the bathtub of a 2 bedroom apartment was getting old. Well thanks to a series of recent events my wife and I stumbled into a deal we couldn’t pass up. Our credit is still pretty crippled (but improving) so buying a home in the traditional sense was still out of the question. But we found some folks with a perfect little place that were willing to owner-finance/lease to own for us. So.. we sort of just bought our first home together! It’ll be another 15 years till it’s truly ours, but at least we finally aren’t dumping money into a landlords pocket for nothing anymore!

Anyhoo. I’m now a little outside city limits in a more country area. I do have one house on one side of me about 50 yards away, nice couple in their 70s. And there are some mobile homes across the street about 100 yards from me. But the other two sides are woods and I have my own 2 acres of yard surrounding me. The woods I back up to looks like a couple thousand acres. I’ll be tracking down the owner soon to see if I can get permission to access it. I’m just so happy to be able to do things like build fires and shoot a .22 play with my dogs in the yard again. It’s also so much better to start the day looking out the bedroom window at trees rather than the side of the next apartment building.

I need to paint the house I think. It’s been remodeled quite well on the inside, but it looks like a shed on the outside. Also, In the coming months I’ll be starting to put together some sort of outdoor living space... somewhere to grill and sit around fires and such. Any ideas on how you guys have set yours up would be great!!

Congrats, look at those trees! Just my 2 cents, get a fire ring first and try a few different locations at different times to figure out where the prevailing winds are and what location "feels" right. You'll get it figured out!

Congrats. I was raised in rural southern Indiana and have been stuck in the suburbs of Kentucky for 30 years. I still get some dirt time in but have to drive 30 minutes to get there. Enjoy your new place.

Well you say that... lol problem is I’m just barely above sea level so when it rains a lot the yard stays pretty squishy.

Congratulations! I think it looks great! Proud of you for finding it.

There are some threads here on ‘yard cooking’ setups. Lots of good ideas floating around.

I kinda feel ya. We are the last house on the bottom of a long hill with a culvert running across from the other side. The water comes down. Left to right and front to back at the same time, 6 properties on my side and 4 on his washes out between my neighbors and my property into the "recreational" land behind us. So as a result muddy clay and sandy silt. In the summer heat it gets hard as hell. I dont even bother seeding it for grass, it wont work.

Congratulations @Donald Devall . It's an awesome thing to own your place and not just give money away every month. To know that when you paint the house you are painting your home!

Can't wait to see what you come up with for the outdoor area. :)

See if you can find a semi truck rim for your fire pit. You can move it around until you find the right spot then set it into the dirt.

    Good for you and congratulations!

Still on the hunt for my own postage stamp in the middle of nowhere but making progress. If I get where I'm after, I'll need to ski/snowshoe/snowmobile in for several months due to seasonal forest service road closures each year. Hope springs eternal...

Very cool looking place. Congratulations. I know you feel so much more free. When I had to move back to rural/suburbs I was pretty unhappy and will be until I get out again.

Make sure your contract is solid if you plan on any major renovations.

Well done. Nice looking place and land. Two acres can offer a lot on it's own. Regarding a fire ring while there a many options my kids and I gathered rocks from different adventures and used them to make ours. It added a little something I think. The kids are grown and gone but the fire pit still sits and gets regular use. When I move some of those rocks will definitely be going along.

Congrats! Nice looking home. I was born in the country as well. But spent most of my life in the city. Three years ago we bought a mobile home out in the sticks, it's in a park, but still nothing like living in the city. I have gotten to the point I can't stand going into cities anymore, most of those people just ain't right I tell ya.

Thanks man. And absolutely. I plan to do a few little things in the near future then just funnel money into paying it off. Once it’s really mine I’ll do the bigger stuff. :D
