    Greetings,

I am glad to share and I promise a detailed report when I get back to the UK. While not bushcraft for a trip, it is amazing.

Here is another teaser from today.

    Greetings,

Promise, full disclosure - other than the details that could lead to a potential ban.:D

This trip wasn't a bushcraft one, however, there's awesome scenery experienced and the making of a new friendship. I hope you will find some pleasure from my sharing. :)

First night was wasted, as we had a late night flight and arrived after 00 am. We did a lot of sightseeing during the next 3 days, starting with Helsinki.

There weren't any bowls for my breakfast, so @T. Pollock came to the rescue.

Open market with food and handmade items. It would have been criminal negligence if I hadn't tried some of the local delicacies. Naturally, I didn't break the LAW and dutifully sampled from the offered choices...

Late night visit to the local cinema multiplex. It may not look it, but with the midnight sun effect, full night was never quite full.

    Greetings,

    How did you know?:11:
    That's exactly how it happened.:55:

The Finnish National Theatre, established in 1872.

    20190710_103523.jpg

In the afternoon we had a very important date. It just so happened that @KFF was planning for a visit to the Varusteleka shop and with us being in Helsinki (nearby) we agreed to meet and get to know each other. Having been offered the option of meeting before her visit there so that we could visit the shop together, I immediately accepted! She graciously offered to pick us up from downtown Helsinki, although not directly on her route. She even offered locational advice when Google Maps failed us while searching for an electrical shop!:)

Fortunately, it wasn't one-way, the kindness, for I would really feel bad about taking advantage of her. My understanding was that there was a bit of a fashion issue involved and advice was gladly offered from our side (not me:rolleyes:) while I was exploring the premises...:D

    20190709_180708.jpg 20190709_180711.jpg 20190709_180739.jpg 20190709_180823.jpg

I wasn't planning on getting anything, but i couldn't in good conscience leave empty-handed...
So, a bit of an energy boost and a ceramic sharpener.

    20190710_083238.jpg 20190711_081209.jpg

The extent of her hospitality went far beyond that, though. She even took us to an exceptional Asian takeout, where we had an experience very positive in both quantity and quality, while remaining at a reasonable price.

    20190709_203618.jpg

Still not satisfied with all that, she even gifted me with the tools necessary for fishing in the lake we were going to visit after Helsinki!

    20190709_220814.jpg

Sadly, I didn't get to use them due to adverse weather conditions till the last day before leaving and this being a couple's vacation, many other activities with my wife competing with fishing...;)

But I will know who to thank for the first catch when it comes, as I do plan on doing some fishing. Thank you @KFF. :)

    Regards,

    Christos

    OMG, what a trip!

Please explain all the different foods in the first set of pics.

Were the people working at Varusteleka as goofy as the ones that run the website? What fun that must have been.

    Greetings,

Indeed it was @MrFixIt. It served to wet my appetite and there are so many members here at BCUSA I could say the same for. I am certainly off to a good start with @KFF and I wish I will have the chance to meet some of you over there at the US at some point as well. :)

@KFF, that is a very deep and profound statement, worthy of fortune cookie inclusion. :p

    :34:
Still at Varusteleka, having worked up an appetite and thirst from all that exploring, I asked @KFF for a local suggestion of the alcoholic variety. I most certainly wasn't disappointed. :)
In fact, I liked the taste a lot and did a bit of research on it along with sampling a bit more of their produce, for purely scientific reasons of course.

The name of that beer is "THE OPPOSITE SHORE" and it is a smoke lager
It's being made by "Brewery Kiiski", a small local brewery that have been making beer for just over five years, located in Mäntsälä in Greater Helsinki region. I highly recommend them. :)

Right, back to Helsinki and a bit more of sightseeing.

    The central railway station.

    20190710_103527.jpg

The following two photos are not important in terms of architecture, location, etc. I include them in an effort to convey the feeling of walking around a city that looks to still be under construction.

    20190711_135930.jpg 20190711_135934.jpg
Most of the major roads were like this. I was curious, so I asked @KFF who mentioned the fact that July is the month when a large part of the city's population goes on their holidays. It made sense after that. :)

Kamppi Shopping Centre and Helsinki Bus Station on the upper left side of the image.

A different type of local delicacies. Again, couldn't help myself, I had to try them.

The stall owner who was also the knife maker threw in these two as a gift:

    20190710_062928.jpg

It was a lot of fun, goofiness included. :D
About the foods, it was all fresh fish, roast salmon, fried (something small) fish and baby potatoes, along with other salad materials.

@NevadaBlue, it was melting- in-your-mouth soft, juicy and exquisitely flavoured. I thought I was in Heaven. That is, until @KFF taught me the error of my ways on the next day...

    Greetings,

Taking @KFF's advice, we visited by bus the city of Porvoo. Founded nearly 800 years ago, it is the second oldest city in Finland and one that has been an important centre of trade and its shore houses were once used to store goods and produce, such as exotic delicacies from distant lands. They were painted red in honour of the arrival of Gustav III, the king of Sweden.

    Greetings,

While enjoying our sampling of the local delicacies, I sent a message to @KFF informing her about the visit. She replied with - and we were pleased to receive - an offer of company. Her home was somewhere nearby and she happened to have a free day. We gladly accepted, as both me and my wife had enjoying getting to know her the previous day and thought it would be nice to have the pleasure of her company again. :)

So, she met us at the bakery and proceeded swiftly to assume the role of our local tourist guide. :D

Porvoo Cathedral, a church with a very fiery past, most recent example of which was a not-so-bright young man in 2006 who had the bright idea to set the roof on fire. :12:

    Greetings,

We did a lot of walking around and talking to @KFF we learned a lot about the country and the people, history as well.

    20190710_132240.jpg

Some of the old warehouses had been turned into antique stores.

Another local specialty shop for which our palates are eternally grateful to @KFF. :)

I wish I could. I will have to settle with one of the two staying in my family, as my wife has taken a liking to both and doesn't want us to give both away. :D

    Greetings,

These are the small balls of sweetness, sourness, etc we sampled earlier on:

    20190711_115609.jpg 20190711_115533.jpg

A small fellow who kept us company while enjoying our after meal tobacco.

    20190710_173907.jpg

    And about the meal...

If you ever visit this town, you MUST visit this place. We had our coffees and later our lunch/dinner there.

    20190710_171648.jpg 20190710_154739.jpg 20190710_154613.jpg

I could spend hours describing the quality of the meat and in the end I would probably run out of words, still needing more. Some things you simply cannot put into words. Some things you simply have to taste in order to KNOW.

Well, I was hungry for knowledge. I did stop at 3 of them, only because the place was so busy that it took them some time to prepare the repeat orders.

THANK YOU @KFF for granting me the privilege of tasting what without any doubt was the best meat and burger in my life. My taste buds are still resonating from the explosions of flavour at the time. :)

And that wasn't all. The day was still young. We visited a large supermarket where @KFF knew the quality of salmon sold (from personal experience:D). I had a taste of 3 differently prepared recipes, 2 smoked ones and one non-smoked. Wanting to preserve the taste of the burgers in my mouth, I didn't want to eat more that a few mouthfuls. However, I had to buy some for a proper research effort at another time.

    Again I must state:
THANK YOU @KFF for enlightening me on the true nature of preserved salmon recipes! :) I didn't have an idea that such pleasure could be derived from preserved food. That half kilo of smoked salmon I got back home... if a definition of "manna" is ever needed of me, I will point them towards Porvoo and suggest trying the meat at that restaurant and the locally preserved salmon there and leave it at that.

Oh, I wouldn't want to forgo mentioning a gift she presented to both me and my wife, surprising us yet again with her hospitality and friendly nature.

    20190718_211011.jpg 20190717_131751.jpg

Leaving Porvoo that afternoon to get back to our apartment at Helsinki, we were richer in many ways, but most important of all was the pleasure and happiness derived from the fact that we had forged in the last couple of days a new friendship, one that both my wife and me will cherish for many years to come. :)

    Regards,

    Christos

Edit: For future reference, if others would like a nice burger, the place is called Meat District .
They cook from organic Charolais, grown locally by Bosgård manor farm.

    Greetings,

Indeed it was and still is, as we had 3 more nights to spend at a cabin in the middle of a forest and in front of a lake. The next few post will deal with that. :)

    Thank you. :)
All those epithets I used and I forgot the fun part. There was definitely a lot of that. :D

So, having taken out rental car, we started on the road to a lake called Ala-Rieveli.

    Screenshot_20190715-095944.png

We were pleasantly surprised by the very cautious way of driving that Finnish drivers use. Everybody was following the speed limit and did the driving in a very responsible manner. We were also amazed by another fact our tour guide (i.e. @KFF :D) gave us. The forested percentage of land in Finland is more than 70%. We knew that this is a country of lakes and forests, but it didn't hit us how much of it until we were on the road.

Regardless of the number of lanes on the motorways and smaller roads, both sides of the road were like this below:

    20190712_122543.jpg

Now, these are not solitary trees lining up the road. We were almost constantly driving through forested land. Even when the forest didn't reach right up to the pavement, you could reach a forest wherever you stopped easily within walking distance and with a few minutes of walking. That's a lot of forest. :30:

Another thing that I hadn't seen before, their bridge construction materials used:

    20190715_120647.jpg 20190715_120652.jpg

The motorways were dotted with random architectural designs, like monuments.

    20190712_104739.jpg

Before we reached our destination, we passed from a small town named Heinola. We made a stop there in order to get supplies and to have a walk around.

And then we moved on to roads like this, getting closer to our home for the next 3 nights.

    Christos

Must correct you a tiny bit, about the bridge, that is support structure.
It will be torn down and burned after the cement is poured.

The last pic, the east part, the road along the border, it's a 2-lane "major" road but other than that looks exactly the same :D

But with roads like this, an elk, jumping to the road, does not leave you too much time to react.

    Greetings,

@KFF, I stand corrected. I should have specified I meant the support structure. In Greece and here in the UK they use much less wood for the support structure in construction.

Upon arrival, I spotted a well concealed bushcrafter, hiding (where else?) in the bushes.

    Greetings,

The property was owned by an elderly couple, Ms Marita and Mr Eric. Eric was 90 years old. Still going strong though, doing works around, gathering branches for their stoves. Ms Marita as well, tending to their garden which was basically spread out all over the property, small plots of flowers and young trees.

There were many buildings in the property. Their own home, a few storage cabins/sheds, the sauna which had a room adjacent to it, probably for relatives visiting, the outhouse for us and our cabin.

    20190713_203123.jpg 20190715_084745.jpg 20190715_084808.jpg 20190715_084822.jpg 20190715_084833.jpg 20190715_084923.jpg

    More on our cabin incoming.

I just wanted to say that I think Finnish people are quite kind and open hearted. They were both very friendly with us, providing us with all the information needed, allowing us to use their boat, their sauna, etc. I helped them as well with menial jobs requiring strength while we stayed there.

    Regards,

    Christos

    Greetings,

Right, the next 3 days were pretty simple and straightforward. Wake up at dawn, going for a run, swimming in the lake to cool off, eating, hiking and recreational activities of the quality time nature with my wife...

So, the rest of the photos will be a mix of the aforementioned activities, all except one...:14:

Mosquitoes were a constant hassle. This trick of burning coffee grounds together with the proper salve took the edge off their attacks.
