I was able to sneak away for a couple of hours today to sling some flies. Moderate rain and 40*F made for a cold trip. After about an hour my hands were so cold That I had lost all dexterity. I was targeting crappie around some deeper structure but ended up with a couple of largemouth bass instead. Not a super exciting post but a good reminder that spring is just around the corner!

Nice! What are the specs on that setup? I just bought a 9' 8wt for bass. Hoping to use it this spring!

It’s a 9.5ft 6 weight. It’s a pretty fast rod so I over lined it just a bit to help slow it down. Your going to love that 8wt setup for bass. A 7.5ft 8wt is my primary summer boat setup. It’s just such a handy size to work with.

Still after the first of the year. Maybe this weekend.

Problem is the difficulty of getting the fly to land in the hole in the ice! Then the line freezes to the ice and I gotta walk out and pull it loose. :(

I was happy to get out. After an hour or so my small motor skills were non existent from the cold. I honestly was not expecting any fish but more of a casting practice outing. However, fishing a black leech pattern low and slow paid off. I had 2 take the bait and several more give it a nudge. The strikes were soooo subtle they were easy to miss.

Congratulations. I cant wait to fish again, especially for largemouth. Little jealous right now! On a fly reel must have been fun.

One of my biggest I ever caught was in cold weather in the 40's outside.

I just invested in an 8wt 7'11" set-up myself. I'm in the process of tying up some deerhair bass flies and go fishing soon. The bass are starting to spawn here in Florida and I'm ready to get out there and catch a big mama!;):dblthumb:
