I needed something to occupy my time while sitting with my wife so made a quick trip to yard and cut a few pieces of cotton wood and tried my hand a whittling a wood spirit. Not too bad for a first go I don’t think. Will try a few more and have some basswood on the way.

This was a good chance for me to put the little sloyd knife I made before to use. I like the size but may thin the profile down a bit.

Thanks. Definetly have lots to learn but it’s a welcomed distraction right now and something I have wanted to do for a while.

    Carved number 2.

Couple more done in cotton wood. The circumstances aren’t not what I had hoped for but whittling has given me something to enjoy and pass the time.

Still whittling. The pencil is the latest. A test of my eyes as much as anything ( just started using readers). Could do a bunch of these on a single pencil if you wanted to. Detail isn’t great but wood chips aren’t flying all over the living room either LOL.

I definitely recommend Doug’s videos if anyone is looking for info on carving characters.

I will probably be making myself some chisels and gouges once I get back on the shop and get the axes finished. I want to try some larger pieces.

That's a great video, first one I used as well.

With winter coming I intend to revisit his snowman video.... ;)

I have been binge watching YouTube carvers lately. Lots of good ones out there.

Decided I wanted to give power carving a go. Pretty tied to the house still but wife is doing better so broke out the dremel and went to a room we have used for her crafts in the past. Hopefully I get the sawdust cleaned up before she notices : ).

Only thing I could grab quick and get back in the house with was seasoned oak firewood. My cheap burrs didn’t like it. Back out for a quick look in the yard and found an oak limb that has spalted and is getting soft but still firm enough to hold some shape.

This is the first go with it. Want take much detail but the spalting adds character.

This mornings project. Somewhat of a carve along with Doug. I did not have the same size block as he used for his carving and had to adapt a bit.
