Was wandering through some of the tourist traps today in San Diego and ran across a blacksmith shop. Got to talking to the Smith and mentioned looking for a striker.

He pipes up with "give me a minute and I'll make ya one". So he drops what he's doing and in about ten minutes he hands it to me still warm, with a piece of flint. I try it and it throws showers of sparks.

Before i get all giddy about it i ask him what i owe him, because let's face it, no matter how good it works, it's not priceless and this is a tourist spot.
" A gift, from me to you. Use and enjoy it in good health" he tells me.

Well that alone doubles its value to me right there, so i drop so cash in the donation box that they use to keep the shop running (state historical site), profusely thank him.

    Nice striker!
Where in San Diego? I’ll be heading that way on after a mission trip to Tijuana. I’d like to visit a historical site and especially one with a blacksmith shop!

    hello,
@tch1718a that is a work of art you got there, You did well giving a donation. As I see it, along similar lines to the giving of a knife, I try to return the favour by giving a silver coin to the Smiddy (Blacksmith) creator of the steel striker. *It is common that the gift of a knife will be given along with a penny, nickel or dime in the box with the knife, so that the recipient can giveback the coin, thereby saving the friendship from being severed by the giving of the sharp blade. That is the story behind such, but more so, the coin stays with the Smiddy (Blacksmith) for friendship & luck. :)
    Regards
    David

Just googled it and I found that it’s in Old San Diego. Blackhawk Smithy and Stable. Looks cool. Usually we have time before our flight home and I’d rather spend it there than the Ocean front boardwalk. Although the “scenery” is pretty nice there!!

Tour the USS Midway if you have not.

That's a really nice looking striker. And he even had flint on hand to give you.

I like visiting the tourist traps there.

My grandfather was from the Ozarks, and though he traveled the country a lot, and considered Colorado just as much home, would never give me a knife. I always had to buy my pocket knives from him as a child. Usually for a penny or nickle.

He told me how knives were only made to cut things, and he never wanted to cut the tires between us.

It's something I've held onto since he had passed. To this day if i give a knife i tell the story, and take the penny for it.

We've toured the Midway, awesome tour. For me because it was the flagship for dessert storm, so I've had aircraft from its deck over me.

Just up from there a few hundred yards is the "Maritime museum". Couple tall ships, a Russian sub, American sub, and others to look through. For the number of shops you your, the cost is reasonable ($18), and you get to actually crawl through the subs, goo through the holds etc.

That's the one. Old town is really just that. It was an old town, and what's there has been restored for tourism. Most the shops have plank wood floors (look original in most areas).
Lots of little places to eat, lots of Mexican pottery, jewellery etc. Some really interesting history.
