I have a really nice fly tying book that was donation to our church Peach Festival that I thought might be a welcome GAW here.

It is a nice book with great photography and also discussions of the natural insects as well as tying recipes and instructions for appropriate flies.

    Open to all.

Simply post I'm in, or for bonus points, a favorite fly fishing related quote. Such as, "fishing is the least important thing of fishing." - Arnold Gingrich.

I will let this go for a week or so then do a random drawing.

    Go!

I cannot resist, I am IN!

    And because I wade in and cast everywhere I can when able;

“Somebody behind you, while you are fishing, is as bad as someone looking over your shoulder while you write a letter to your girl.“
    ~ Ernest Hemingway

"Many go fishing all their lives without knowing that it is not fish they are after."
    ~ Henry David Thoreau

"To go fishing is the chance to wash one's soul with pure air, with the rush of the brook, or with the shimmer of sun on blue water. It brings meekness and inspiration from the decency of nature, charity toward tackle-makers, patience toward fish, a mockery of profits and egos, a quieting of hate, a rejoicing that you do not have to decide a darned thing until next week. And it is discipline in the equality of men - for all men are equal before fish."
    ~Herbert Hoover

    And the great one, because I try a fly on every spot I see;

"You miss 100 percent of the shots you never take."
    ~Wayne Gretzky

I could be here all night.....

I am in sir ! Thank you for your generosity !
My wife and I are just getting back into fly rods, she just bought a couple used rods over the weekend. We are in the process of learning new things and relearning things we forgot.
A quote I saw on a T-shirt about 20 years ago ; "Meat without feet" written above an outline of a fish..... this has become our motto at our house !
A pic of some trout we caught this weekend

I’m in! Just picked up my first fly rod here on the trade blanket and caught my first trout, a native cutthroat, on it while in Yellowstone this week. .....and as far as a fishing quote, this is a well used one but I like it.

    It’s called fishing not catching.

Just got my dad a Tenkara rod and got my fly rod out again. Looks like I need to start tying flies again.

A few years back, I scored big at a garage sale. The man's grandfather had recently passed away and left a motherlode of fly tying and lure making (mostly inline spinner) supplies. The man wasn't a fly fisherman and didn't have any interest in making his own lures. He gave me all the supplies (probably a good 4-5 large totes) for a measly 25 bucks; only if I promised him I would tie flies and make sure the supplies got used the way his grandfather would have meant them to be. I had to do a lot of sorting as the supplies were just dumped into totes when they were cleaning out his father's house. After separating fly tying gear from lure making gear I "bagged and tagged everything" These are the fly tying supplies I came away with:

    19400866_10154659506227592_1471713972_o.jpg

After taking this pic I started going through the lure making supplies and I found buried in one of the boxes the exact book you are giving away @Pastor Chris so I am not in for this GAW. I will say there is an amazing amount of information in this book for both the novice just getting into tying or the seasoned pro. Look closely at the books in my picture and you will see all kinds of post it notes sticking out. Those are all notes hand written by the grandfather of the man that sold me these supplies. Those notes are invaluable. He also wrote notes throughout the books in the margins. Notes talking about specific patterns to use and even some locations on local rivers. I never knew the man who originally owned these supplies, but every time I reference a book and see his notes I feel as though he is still living through me. Every time I catch a fish on a pattern I tied I feel he is right there with me as proud as if he caught the fish himself.

Here is a bunch of "drys" I tied. I keep this box in my trout vest and will either bring my Tenkara rod with me or cast them with my spinning gear using a casting bubble.

    20190714_231327.jpg

Great GAW @Pastor Chris. As I said that book has a wealth of information. Whoever wins will no doubt enjoy it. I will toss in a few quotes just for some inspiration.

"Catching fish is low on my agenda when I go fishing. I’m much more interested in savoring the day and exploring the wildlife of the river."
    Fennel Hudson

"If people concentrated on the really important things in life, there’d by a shortage of fishing poles."
    Doug Larson

"Fishing provides time to think, and reason not to. If you have the virtue of patience, an hour or two of casting alone is plenty of time to review all you’ve learned about the grand themes of life. It’s time enough to realize that every generalization stands opposed by a mosaic of exceptions, and that the biggest truths are few indeed."

    72205097-3231-4991-80CE-EBE82A232E3A.jpeg BROOK TROUT
    Fri, 08/14/2015 - 18:00 -- elliegsnyder

    At the midpoint

    Of a high meandering brook

Flicks the tail of a brook trout.

    The lithe tail curves

In the still cool shade of the shelter of the bank

Upon which stands a man with a long slender pole.

    The melancholy man sends

His line back and forth, high through the sun,

And catches the eye of the brook trout

The brook trout’s eye is held and taut,

And when next the line lands,

Its deceitful prize is plundered and submerged.

    The plunder is ephemeral

And the brook trout rises, flashing, to the hand

    Of the melancholy man.

    The man grasps

    A panicked fighting body

And sees it in the glory of the sun.

    The glory embellishes

A flexing fin, a writhing tail, a gleaming eye,

    And stirs a melancholy heart.

The life of a brook trout is thudded away

In a singular blow to an unforgiving stone

    Resting beside noisy waters.

A brook trout rests beside noisy waters,

    Metal strung through its gills

Made slowly deader by the beating sun.

Dead comrades join the book trout

As the sun moves across the sky

And hits the tall grass whose shadows hit the brook trout.

A melancholy man picks up his dinner

And starts home, fish bouncing on his back

Wriggling as if there was life yet.

    A fire finds life

And the flesh of a brook trout finds fire

    And the plates are set.

A meal of trout is had

At a table set for two

By none but a melancholy man.

    I’m in please.

    Edward

I've recently found myself strongly intrigued by Tenkara, and I have a feeling I'll be acquiring a rig in the very near future. Being completely ignorant of this topic, I'm in for the book. Thanks for the chance!
