Free map, compass and Survival courses

    Just a public service announcement. The Commonwealth of MA offers some free hunter safety and related courses. They're free but space is limited. I'm not affiliated with them but figured I'd mention it here since, well, it's right up our alley.

    Map, Compass and Survival has some openings for the spring and summer. See:

    I took a turkey hunting class they offered a few years ago. It was in the middle of nowhere, I did not know one could drive so many hours and still be in the State, but it was a really well done thing. If these are even half as good it will be well worth the time spent.

    Here in Denver the USGS offered a half day course on map and compass and the second half of the day on how to operate a GPS. It was a very good course. I don't know if it's still offered or not. A phone call would reveal the answer.

    I gather they're taught by motivated volunteers. The qualty is very good. I just retook M&C. It was well put together and fun and the folks who taught were engaging and knowledgeable.

    There were some people from the State there but yes a lot of volunteers were there .
