    It took a long time but this style of drawer system, sorted well is what ended up helping me. Hygiene, knives, tools, cooking, eating, navigation, bug and sun, and first-aid. That plus moving house forced me to par .Down. There are 4 happy young adults and a 7 yr old who now have gear to do any trip they want.

    One thing I've learned is to never store any kind of food in a backpack for very long. Maybe canned food, but certainly nothing in a wrapper or bag. Mice will get into it and not only ruin the food, but make a nasty mess in your pack. They also love to get inside a pack and tear up toilet paper to make a nest.

    I use a lot of file cabinets for storage. They hold a lot of gear and will handle serious weight.
