I’m wanting to try an one hand opening multi tool- trying to decide between the Gerber and the Leatherman.

    Both made in USA,
    Both OH opening,
Both have 25 year warranty in Australia,
    Gerber has longer blade
Leatherman has (supposed) better wire cutters and a saw.
Gerber has a pry bar, nail puller (I actually like the idea) and awl, Leatherman does not. Gerber also seems to have better Screwdriver (can take normal bits, center drive, OH opening).

As far as I can tell the Gerber is better, although I think the Leatherman brand on a whole is better... so what should I get?

If they both have a warranty that suits your use, then I would pick the Gerber since you believe it to be more useful, and then keep the documentation you would need to have it warrantied.

The reviews on the Center Drive are really positive. In my experience, stay away from the Gerber stuff aimed at the wannabe-Bear Grylls fan base, and you'll have a good product.

I've had a Leatherman and a Gerber for 15 years now. Got both upon my entry into the Army. While I prefer the smooth action of the Leatherman, the Gerber is a tough tool worth having as well.

Get what suits your needs and don't look back. Sounds like you've got it narrowed down to 2.

    Cheers

FWIW I have five Leatherman tools and only two Gerbers. Overall I think Leatherman makes the best multi tools but the Gerber pliers can take more abuse. If I was looking for a big, heavy, one hand opening plier multi tool I would go with the Gerber Center Drive.

I have a centerdrive. It’s just ok. The bit holder is a great concept, but the rest of the tools are lacking in execution and kind of gimmicky. After a couple of weeks spent really wanting to like it I went back to carrying my super tool 300.

I have the exact same sentiments. I’ve owned a few examples from both companies. overall I feel like leatherman makes a more refined tool while gerbers pliers seem stronger. YMMV.

Can’t really go wrong with either one.
