first I've heard of it. they chose a good location imo. north of Calgary, south of Edmonton not far from the highway or airport.

I like how they organized the symposium into camps. I think some might be crowded though like Camp Kochanski. I would be interested in the axe camp when Julia Kalthoff takes her turn.

They've definitely got some heavy hitters in the line up. A bit far afield for me, but hey, stranger things have happened. I'd sure love to go.

This might be a one-time event. I don't think we'll see this line up again all at one time.

Looks like the keynote speaker list is getting good

    Lars Falt
    Cody Lundin
    Lisa Fenton
    David Holladay
    Dave Wescott
    Mors Kochanski
    Sean McBride
    Les Stroud
    Paul Kirtley

At this point, I wouldn't be surprised if very soon Ray Mears is booked.

The separate camps also have some very prominent folks in the community

I believe she is working on her own line of Axes: https://www.kalthoffaxes.se/

Heard about that in a Paul Kirtley podcast (10/10/18) where he was interviewing several people during Bushcraftfestivalen in Sweden.

Tom Lutyens is going to be there. I talked to him the other day and he told me they were going to try to get Ray Mears to show up. I am not sure that is going to happen, but it is being discussed.

I just saw this and I'm working on the details on going right now! Keep in mind people that prices are in Canada dollars! $400 for registration is only $300usd! That's insanely cheap for what they are giving!

My son and i were thinking about going but for 300 dollars I can buy a lot of beer, brats and bacon and spend an extended time in the woods away from hordes of people.

Rod Garcia is talking about going to represent his grail bushcraft tool status.

Registration is open, btw. Probably see you there.

Registration, the meal package for the week, and one of the event challenge coins comes out to a hair under $500.
    Well it sure is happening!

Looking forward to possibly meeting you there, man.

Well, don't bother looking for me, between the travel expenses, registration fee, food for 12 days, and setting aside for a few books, trinkets, and a new tool or two brings me in at just about $1600.00 bucks, there very well be a lot I don't know compared to the celebs on the rooster due to speak, but in truth I get by ok on what I do know.
Taking into consideration that I live closer to x39 than I do Alberta, and that I know his area of Maine pretty well and can drive there in about three hours give or take a half hour, I'd rather spend about half that much on a week long camp out with x39 and a few of his friends than spend nine days trying to remember where I belong in a group of a thousand strangers all talking different languages.
I'm thinking I'd have a better time, probably learn as much or more than I would at the Alberta meet, and go home knowing some genuinely nice people a new friends.

    But that's just me. :D

I keep mulling it over and over. And as much as I'd like to attend, I'm with Moe M. on this.

As it stands, after going over the schedule, There seems to only be only one speaker who's topic has piqued my interest, Cody Lundin and his talk on "Lie and they can Die". I can't see myself spending the money for just that talk. I'm not saying the other speakers and even camps aren't going to be good, rather they just don't interest me.

The internet has created a shift in information access. No longer does one have to travel many miles and spend money to learn. Now I can do it from the convenience of my house and in close proximity of my refrigerator which is stocked with food and beer, which is exactly why I wanted to hear Cody speak. This ease of information access has also created a ton of bad erroneous information. I'm not suggesting Cody is going to dispel all the BS out there, rather I just want to hear him rant about it, lol.

I'd like to go for sure, but really more for the networking/meeting other folks aspect of it. I'm sure there will a ton of interesting people there beyond the presenters. Looking forward to trip reports from any forum members who make it.

@x39 I'm sure your experience is similar, but of all the events I've ever attended, my fondest memories have been the relationship development with the attendees. Often times I actually attended for that reason, while completely dismissing lectures. When it comes to bushcraft, I'm much more interested in personal philosophy of the craft over teaching me something.

I agree with @x39 & @J Stephens. It's the people you get to meet and comradery of so many like-minded people in the same place.

Though you can not complain about the Keynote Speakers: Lisa Fenton, David Holladay, Paul Kirtley, Mors Kochanski, Lars Falt, Cody Lundin, Sean McBride, Les Stroud and David Wescott. When will Mors Kochanski, David Holladay, Lars Flar and David Wescott the fathers of bushcrafting together again at the same event.?

Also, the Presenters: Nicole Apelian, Jose Martinez Amoedo, Nick Gordon, Ross Hinter, Brooks Hogya, Tom Lutyens, Connit Gottselig, Ingo Hentschel, Ben Piersma, Robert Dale Rogers and Julie A Seton.

We're still seven months away from this event. Who knows, who else will attend as a speaker or presenter. I'm going to enjoy this event! :4:

Well i just got word that I will be a Breakout Presenter for the GBS! I will be doing traditional canoe poling.

I was looking into buying a cabin room, and the smallest they have is 4 people. roughly 160ca which is maybe 125usd? If anyone else is going and interested in chipping in to having a bed in one of the cabins please let me know ASAP through a PM.

I hope to do a canoe trip this year. I'd like to an extended trip in the boundry water or great lakes region. Congratulations on being a presenter.

How is everyone getting there? I'll be flying in.

How do you guys plan on going from the airport to the symposium location? Maybe we could carpool.

I'm assuming so. I have not bought my flight yet.

I got the meal package as well to make things easier for me.

    @EternalLove,

I'm renting an SUV. If we carpool, I can rent a minivan. What time are you arriving in Calgary?

I don't know when I arrive but I assume that I will be working and traveling around then and will fly out of the Midwest. Hopefully not to far away to avoid a layover somewhere. I'll try for a 11am flight to arrive around 2:00-3:00pm. I also may fly out on Sunday just to be certain that I don't miss it.
