The crew is here from Home Depot to look at doing some renovations for Mike. They are looking at the back deck now! I am overwhelmed. The original scope was his bathroom to make it easier for him. No words...

    Amen brother!
Words of William Cowper come to mind

Judge not the Lord by feeble sense
But trust Him for His grace
    Behind a frowning providence
    He hides a smiling face

    Wow

The crew left a while ago. The leader said it will take 6 to 8 weeks to get approval from Corporate. I looked and they have allotted 500 million dollars for Veteran home improvements! (For those who don’t know, Mike is 100% disabled from the Iraq war. We have been caring for him since ‘06)
They are going to rebuild his entire bathroom, making it wheelchair accessible for him. Replace the carpet in the main part of the house with hard surface so his wheelchair will not tear up the flooring. Resurface the back deck, making it smooth. Install the wheelchair lift for the back deck. (We moved that from the old place, it was donated by an anonymous doner when the VA failed) AND, install a big raised bed planter in the back yard so Mike can participate in the gardening too.
I am totally overwhelmed. They said there will be 80 to 100 people here at the peak of the renovations! I guess this is what happens in the TV shows where they spend a couple of days at someone’s house.

Do business with Home Depot. I am just astounded... :14:

Mike is my stepson. My wife died in ‘94 from a brain tumor. I had 3 kids at home at the time and we had always talked about what happens if something takes one of us. I met Mike’s mom and we hit it off. She had 3 kids, so, the Brady bunch began. SIX kids and Bert and I moved from Colorado to Nevada to start over. Been quite a trip!

The things I have witnessed Home Depot do here since Hurricane Michael have been amazing. They paid for employees to have somewhere to stay, for food, brought in fuel trucks really a top notch company. I fully support them and I am glad to hear they are helping your family.

    Much respect to Home Depot.

Much respect to you. I understand it's family but I also have some understanding of how much of a challenge it is caring for someone who is disabled.

I'm glad Mike has someone to look out for him and appreciate what you and your family are doing .

So glad to hear this, Nevada. My wife is in her mid 40s and has been suffering from MS for about 5 years now...and its harsh and unforgiving...and to throw physical (and im sure mental/emotional) disabilities from serving his country into the mix just sounds like a tough road. It's comforting to see he has such a solid and amazing support system.
From my understanding hes been on a new MS med for a few months now, hows it working?

He has been on the new drug since late October. It is a six month sequence, an infusion every six months. He just got his latest infusion (the second one) last week. So far, so good. He seems to be holding his own better than with the previous drug which had to be infused every 28 days. It sure is a lot easier on all of us, mentally, physically and financially. It cost us several hundred dollars a month for the travel and hotels, every month. Now it is only twice a year. Of course, we still end up going for other reasons because of scheduling issues with the VA, for things like dental care. But, overall, it has been a good change.

Ive been drifting back and forth between Lowe’s and Home Depot because Lowe’s has that 10% discount and the designated vet parking place . We spend many thousand per year on the rentals so the discount is significant .
I did not realize Home Depot had such a program though and now I’m going to have to rethink .
We have been buying replacement windows at Home Depot but most of the plumbing at Lowe’s .
Haveing to walk a few steps further ,
compared to a company changing someone’s life makes the choice simple .

Awesomeness from home depot. I go to homedepot first for everything. Pass 3 hardware stores to get there. Happy for you and your son

Yes, he can’t take care of himself, by himself. He came home from Iraq, broken, in ‘06. By the spring of ‘07, he and my wife had been living in Salt Lake City and then San Antonio and were ready to come home. He has been living with us since.
In the summer of ‘17, we (actually Mike, using his VA loan) bought this place. It is not new, but it is a palace to us. It is a modular home with an added on wing. That gave us two master suites, one for Mike and one for us.
We have been planning the bathroom renovation since we found this place. Mike qualifies for the grant from the VA to do the renovations needed, but if you don’t live in a ‘civilized’ place, it is almost impossible to get the work done. The VA takes up to 2 years to pay the contractor for the work and nobody here can carry that kind of load for that long.
So, we had been scheming how we could pay for the needed changes, a bit at a time. One of the contractors we asked for bids used some of his contacts and the local radio station got involved.
That led to all this happening. We are still in shock.
