Broke out the bow today for the first time in about two months. We moved and I've had some injury keeping me from doing core involved movements. Did OK considering, groups were aboit 2.5" at 20 yards, but I knew every shot that was off was pulled. I could feel the errors, just need to get back into it and focus.

I just have shot my bow today, but I went fishing instead.
Being out in the hot sun for a few hours kind of whooped me. Not used to nice days.

I had to pass this year on our 3D league do to time and health issues. I am hoping to get back shooting by the end of summer and the first cool days. I want to get a deer with my bow if I can.

I had a fun season one year hunting squirrels using a flu-flu set up and blunts. Never hit a single squirrel.......but I scared the ever livin' daylights out of 5 or 6!!!!! I made the flu flu arrows out of some turkey feathers I had laying around. A bit tough to wrap and glue. I looked like a second grader on craft day. Quite a mess. But they held up and are still going strong. I am going to get my bow strung up, it hasn't seen daylight in some time. Great post.

I've recently gotten back into archery. It's been about 45 years since having a bow, back in my teens.

I treated myself to a 64" Toelke Whip, 40 lbs at 28", and I'm drawing 31+. I'm really enjoying it. Getting in some arrows pretty much every day.

A couple pics out in the yard today.

I must admit to not shooting much for a few months. When I did start shooting again, I sucked way bad. 20 yards:

Someone who knew anything would have figured this out before, but it took me weeks. I couldn't see improvement, and I kept thinking whats's going on? I shot better than this with the bow at 70lbs when I first started out...hmmm

I had dialed my weight down to focus better on form. Shots that felt perfect were going off track. Everything seemed up in the air. I was almost ready to hire a coach. And then I added just a few lbs to the bow, bringing me up to about 63. First group with higher poundage at 20 yards:

Yep, I'm a dummy all right. I guess my arrows are too stiff for the bow to be at 60lbs. Now I just need to re-adjust my sight's zero.

We like it here. We only have 8.5 acres, but we are right next door to vast public lands.

I changed the arrows for my barebow setup and I went out to test them - Avalon Classic 500, 30" CtoC 200gr fieldpoint, 400gr arrow. They are a good match for the #47@28" and I went out to find their crawl at 20m, 25m, 30m, 35m and 40m. Once I found and learnt it I did a walk out from 20m to 40m - stringwalking

    That's fantastic shooting right there.

I'm flinging a few between waiting for paint to dry on a set of arrows for the upcoming hunting season.

Thank you Longcruise, stringwalking is as accurate as shooting using sights when the distance is known.

Good luck on your hunting season - you still have a few months I think. Share your arrows once they are done please.

I was doing pretty well at 20 yards today, and decided to push out to 30 yards. I was able to keep some consistency. Seems 30 yards is about point-on distance for my bow/arrows.

30 yards, Lots of room to tighten it up, but for me this is a good improvement. I've only been shooting for a couple months after putting it down over 40 years ago..

Been shooting this Dryad ILF set up on and off for a while along with my Blacktail one piece. Trying to get in 3 days of a week of shooting at the local range. Bow season for deer starts Sept. 14th, I've got some work to do. Local Club has a 3D this weekend. I think I'll shoot this bow. Likely to use both bows this season, seem to be shooting them both about the same. We'll see in another 6 weeks or so....

Did some shooting on Saturday as a break from canoe work. Still working on consistency with instinctive shooting.

Seems like when I try to figure out how I am aiming, I get worse.

Did some walk-back practice today. One arrow at 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, and 35 yards. On this run I dropped the 20 yard arrow low/right, but it was my best overall for the day.

These were an experiment in how light I could go with the spines using my current bow, and I think I pushed it too far; so these aren't the best flyers.

I regularly post these over in the primitive tools thread but here are a few that worked better

    Umm. No.

I will be using my Barnett Whitetail 2 Crossbow for Connecticut archery in two weeks. I hate to say it but it is spot on and in a few shots you are at peak shooting ability.

I will do some with my Bowtech Guardian for September and October when Massachusetts opens up in mid October. Different story.

I love my whip. I have several of Dan's bows. Back in 2014 I told him that I was going to be the first guy in modern times to intentionally hunt and take a wolf on the ground with a Longbow. I was admiring a really nice bow on the rack at the time and he told me if I bought it he would give me my money back upon killing a wolf with it. I passed on the offer. A few months later.......

    IMG_20140909_114326_243.jpg

    Who knew? :)

It got some pretty good magazine coverage, but alas, no free bow.

P.S. maybe I will see you at the reservoir some spring. I hit the MBA carp shoot every few years.

"Have you shot your bow today?"

Sadly, no. I haven't shot my bow all summer! And deer season is just a few weeks away. This weekend for sure.
