Finally got a Mother carrier for my canteen kit this week and been trying to figure out how to load it and with what. I usually have my FB Nano stove with me and a small pop can alchy stove for a quick hot cup when I dont want to builds a fire. The pop can stove & fuel bottle take up too much space in the MCC so I started trying to find an alternative and I think I came up with one.
This is the Turbo Gnome from MiniBull Design, Tinny has been making Alcohol stoves for a looong time and has some pretty good ones out there.
Holds maybe an ounce of fuel, I was using 3/4 and getting about 11 min burns. Boiling 2 cups in about 7.5 min. The nice thing is it is filled with carbon felt so it wont spill and has a cap so you can leave fuel in it.
Anyway, just tinkerin' in the garage while the thunderstorms roll by....
From Friday’s family hike...
Just the essentials...
Refill at the Franklin Falls...
One last look around before we headed out...
Just some skills practice, staying hydrated. It’s hot here in the Yakima Valley...
again on the trail
I think I know those falls. Columbia River Gorge?
Snoqualmie Pass, Franklin Falls.
Easy family trail...
Nice, I've been there. I used to live in Snoqualmie. We'd head east over the pass to get away from the rain for a little while.
That first pic has me all hot and bothered.
Anybody see where there is a heavy cover 3 piece german style military mess kit coming soon? WOW. Looks like it will be awesome.
Teaser release on instagram:
Woah now, I've been wanting one in a decent metal for quite a while. This is extremely interesting news.
Oh my sweet lord.
Wonder what the price point will be?
There is a little more info if you read through the instagram comments. The picture above does not show it, but I believe there is also an inner cup like in the german mess kit, maybe with a handle. And also an additional lid.
One thing I saw somebody do with a german mess kit (though it was aluminum so maybe not recommended) was use it as a dutch oven, by placing the mess kit on it's side with the inner cup placed inside to bake bread. The mess kit can be placed or hung over coals with more coals placed on top. The titanium material will be ideal for this. This kit will be extremely useful and versatile. It will complement the canteen cup well.
That's exactly my interest. I've seen those used as an oven to very good success. I wonder if HC accepts first born children.
OHHHH Boy.....need to save my pennies for sure... this is going to sell like hotcakes.
Fire ban solution.
Improvise, adapt, and.... drink hot coffe in the sun when it’s 105?
I'm planning to add another cup to my setup and I'm considering the HC Ti canteen cup and lid. I plan on sticking with my Nalgene Oasis bottles with my stainless USGI canteen cup and adding another cup with a lid.
Can anyone who carries a dual canteen setup tell me if they carry/use both lids, or only carry a single lid? Does the HC Ti lid fit the USGI cup?
@Odie , not quite...the HC lid is a little more square on the handle side. It sets on there pretty well and stays put but wont snap on.
This is on a Rothco SS cup...
For those interested in getting one of these kits, they qualify for free shipping in the USA at https://bushcraftoutfitters.com/
I love the oasis! I carry two in my "long-term" bag, each in a GI canteen cup, but only one lid. And sometimes I think about getting rid of that. In my normal day pack I carry two canteens, one GI canteen cup, and one lid. Except for maybe helping to keep ashes out, I can always wait an extra minute for water to boil, so I'll probably dump the lid. One less thing to carry. If needed, aluminum foil works well as a lid, weighs less, and is multi-purpose.
Thanks for the input. I think I'll end up adding the HC titanium cup and lid to my setup in the near future.
