Hello my name is Sarah... I'm new to this world.....VERY NEW ... I've always enjoyed being outdoors and camping but roughing it for me was taking a luxury tent and packing everything but the kitchen sink.

In the last year I've received a reality check of what roughing it really is.... drinking out of tadpole infested puddles with a filtered straw, carrying only what will fit in my hiking pack, starting my own fire with flint and steel (if anyone's life depended on me getting it quick we would have all been dead) etc... and most importantly.. never use a knife to cut into cardboard if I want to live to tell about it

I haven't always been the "roughing it" type but I'm finding it to be fun and useful for that "just in case" time we all should be prepared for. I can't wait to absorb everyone's tips, knowledge, and tricks of Bushcrafting.

lol I was given a knife to use but had to give scouts honor to never ever ever touch cardboard with it. apparently cardboard is a knives arch enemy and the person that has to sharpen it doesn't appreciate it much.

    Thanks for answering me hon,

I'd like to suggest that you look into a low cost knife and how to sharpen / maintain it. Once you know that you can cut all the cardboard you like.

For a good low cost couple of options, a old hickory 7" butchers knife is a nice largish knife for camp cookery, and a Mora knife is a small carving / using knife that is scary sharp as it comes and pretty easy to maintain.

The old hickory runs about 7 - 11 bucks and the mora can run betwee 8 and 20 for basic one.

Plenty of threads here on both.

Also While I am not a total fan, if you google the 5C's of basic bushcraft gear you will find a youtube run by a fellow that preaches that.

    Container
    Cutting tool
    Combustion
    Cover
    Cordage.

Also there is a nice sticky thread on camp / bushcraft kit for total under $100 so you can see lots of folks make do and learn with lower cost stuff until they are ready to move into their perfect choices for what they like to do.

If you enjoy the Alone show on History Channel (who wouldn't like to win half a million dollars LOL) there is a thread in the media forum following that, and some of the contestants past and present even grace us with visits and their insites.

Just about a life time of fun in the out doors ideas.

Don't get caught up in a one way solution. Seek what works for you, ask questions, and I bet you get tons of answers.

When you get to fire, nothing wrong with a plane ol' bic, but a firesteel is a fun thing to master when you are ready.

For Florida, a Ax isn't probably as useful as a knife and maybe a machete or shovel. Threads here on those things also.

IOW you can find and learn about a lot, including just plane old self growth stuff.

No one here says ya got to do or not do, Most say walk your own walk and find your own path, but you will get a ton of ideas and suggestions. Just take what is useful, and won't be long before you will be adding in your own.

Oh Just remembered, There are a lot of bushcraft ladies who run youtube channels who also have posted here, not that the guys are bad, but sometimes having a girl's point of view is useful if your a girl I suspect. My daughter has been running woods with brothers, and now her fiance, so I know girls can master anything that they want in the out of doors.

Have fun on the adventures that are coming your way. Fresh new eyes and their stories always interest me.

    Jim

    Hiya Sarah!
Welcome from NW New Jersey from a fellow female (mostly day) hiker turned bushcraft student! :p
I hope you find this community to be as awesome as I have found them to be, and that you have a great time learning some outdoor skills and confidence :)
I completely agree with others that the bushclasses are a terrific free resource to begin your journey!

Ahaha! One of the first lessons in bushclass is how to sharpen your knife. You can impress your kind friend when, after a little while, you return their knife even sharper than when it came to you!
