i saw an article regarding how wild hogs have taken over neighborhoods around the Fukushima Nuclear power plant. As I read the article I noticed that the authorities were then dispatching the hogs with PCP air rifles. No mention of the caliber and the hogs were caged allowing for a close in shot. Having shot hogs with 308 and had the jog off a bit, I was impressed that even up close they were able to put them down.

Funny thing though...never had one even limp away with .50 or the 45-110....I really should look into why that is...

    Anyway- here's a link

There is a guy in TX that uses a Gamo Magnum .22 springer air gun and he kills hogs at 25 yards. Puts a pellet in their brain and they drop instantly. Just look up Gamo Magnum .22 on YT and you'll see plenty.

I have this same air rifle and it packs a punch but you need to be VERY accurate. You need a hard hitting gun to drop them with a broadside but a brain shot, a 22 grain subsonic lead pellet will penetrate the skull into the brain.

Check out Keith Warren hog hunting with air gun on you tube. He hunts with both 22 and 25 cal, a little different shot placement with each but very effective.

There are some very powerful air rifles out there. Lots of people use them in .40 cal to 20 ga for size. Heck Lewis And Clarke took them on their trips of discovery.

I'm surprised as well, although this isn't the first time I've heard of people putting down hogs with a pcp. I don't practice shooting enough to be confident in a shot like that, with that gun on that particular animal. Literally zero room for error there.

I have seen a video of a fellow using a .25 Hatsan springer to kill young 30-40lb. hogs, could be the same video your talking about. I bought one after seeing the video. I once took some .25 hollow point pellets and glued BB's into the point. They hit pretty hard, it was interesting. There was a magazine article many years ago about a old timer, I think he was a Eskimo, that believed all he ever needed was a 22 short and a head shot for all of his hunting.

There's also a 9mm air rifle that packs quite a punch too. I can't recall the name, but it's throwing a .355 caliber, 115 gr. fmj downrange at 800-900 fps. And accurate. That'll punch a hole in a hogs head, no problem.

Shot placement mitigates caliber concerns in many cases.
Poor shot placement cannot necessarily be made up for by a larger caliber.
If I could get a blind with a stable rest within 50 yards of a feeder or hog wallow, I would be willing to try a large caliber airgun for hogs... As long as I have a buddy backing me up with a .308 or 12 ga. Autoloader, just in case.

Here in Florida most hunters use tree climbers so they are safe from the hogs but it is really so they can see over the palmettos, be sent free and above the normal eye view of the game animals. They truly are great if you want to carry an extra 16-20lbs around with you. Really it is the best way to still hunt here in Florida it is just kind of a young mans game. Us old guys have enough to carry just dragging our fat old asses though the woods. LOL

Quarter bores are just the start of high power air guns. Several companies make .30 cal and up air rifles. There are quite a few .45-.50 cal big bores too.

A guy killed a bison with a big bore.

It is deer season here, so I had access to deer heads. Just a casual test , but at 5 yards my $120 Beeman rifle got 6" penetration with crosman destroyer and about 3 1/2" with gamo rockets, .22 caliber pellets.

A shot to the ear will drop one in its tracks, .22 caliber at 50 yards will get it done too.

I would not shoot my .22 pellet gun at a
Hog. It's a powerful PCP gun, but only shooting a 19 grain projectile. Too light in my opinion.

Now a .22 LR? Yea, looks like a blast.

If we had hogs and if I was going to use an airgun I'd be using my 50cal Sam Yang Dragon Claw.

Lol I have seen the hole that Sam Yang makes. You wouldn’t have to be up in any kind of stand for pretty much anything other than bear.

PCP’s aren’t bb guns from your youth most likely.

I have 2, a .22 and a .25. I wouldn’t shoot hogs with mine, but like others mentioned, there are some big bore and very powerful airguns out there.

Saw a website of a guy that goes big game hunting in Africa with a big bore PCP and took some impressive game.
