I know this has probably been mentioned before, but has anyone considered having suspenders in your kit?
I was just thinking about going through hard times, and know that I would be shedding a lot of pounds. Seems to me suspenders would make a good addition to long term preps, because smaller sized pants may be hard to find.
They can also help when you have multiple items on your belt.

I like and use suspenders especially if I'm working outside a lot.

At some point, people will understand why older trousers had an adjustable gusset in the back.

Understood. I first started wearing suspenders when hunting. They are much more comfortable than trying to tighten your belt.

I lost a bunch of weight over 2018 (about 4" worth). Mrs gave me 2 pair for Christmas. I really need to start using them since she has threatened to buy me new pants......

My wool pants that I use when I go to the woods all have suspender buttons. I find if I wear suspenders for too long I get painful lower back spasms. I use my belt to carry equipment. I can wear larger size pants and not have to worry about looking like a plumber.

Suspenders are worn by a lot of professional loggers to help keep their trousers up so they don't get caught on undergrowth while working.

They hang small tools of off D-rings attached to the suspenders, like tree-diameter measuring tapes and marking tools.

Wow! And here I thought it was just me that got back pain from suspenders!
I have suspenders on my nail bags and that configuration doesn’t bother me at all and takes the load off my hips, but my back feels jacked if I wear them on pants....
so far the best I’ve found are some offered by Duluth Trading Co. these feature only 2 side clips and the strap/ shoulder configuration reminds me of a firearm shoulder holster.
I never have figured out the “why” suspenders cause issues as wearing bib overalls doesn’t cause pain....

I went through several elastic suspenders and finally went to a one piece leather reigns ,
exactly the right length and the hooks work in my belt double row holes .
It pays off too, so I don't have to wear my belt so tight any more. I usually have keys tools a change in my pockets as well as my knife and phone and flashlight .

I rock suspenders becuase I think they look cool.

But, yes. I have suspenders in my bug out bag for more practical reasons.

Had some custom made by a local saddlesmith, elastic on the back, leather on the front.
Wear them with my chainsaws trousers.

Wear ‘em all the time! Like the ones that hook to the belt rather than the ones that clip to the pants! Better when you have to drop trow when wearing layers.

i keep forgetting that there's a type that can be hooked to a belt. i wore some for a time, and liked it...but they were cheap, and didn't hold on to my pants well.

I, um, guess I knew about those... but they fell out of my brain. Definitely sounds worth a try.

But, I am having a hard time finding them. You're talking about ones that have loops instead of clips on the end?

Having no butt, I must wear suspenders to keep my pants up. I use the kind that have the upside down plastic hooks that attach to a belt. They are called Perry suspenders and they are easily found on the internet. The first ones I ever tried I found at Walmart. I wear my belt pretty loose and just let the suspenders hold the pants up. The only problem with them is that they will slide around on a belt that's too thin or smooth. A rough belt keeps them in place. They last a lot longer than the ones that clip onto your pants. Those things eventually get weak and fall apart, or they wear out places on your pants with their little teeth.

When I wear this modern version of M51 artic pants and liner, suspenders are the only way they were designed to stay put.

Duluth Trading Co. has several different styles that are heavy duty. For a couple of years, I wore them instead of a belt to keep my knees from showing!

My favorite pair came from Home Depot. They're the very heavy duty type that are used to hold up tool belts. They usually run about $10 - $15 per pair. I used mine to clip to a large capacity fanny pack. Works great.

The old Police brand suspenders are comfortable. They have the leather tabs for use with pants that have suspender buttons. I have found that they don’t irritate my shoulders like some heavier types can.

The cool thing about suspenders is that I can loosen my belt quite a bit, yet my pants stay up.

I just got a pair made by Dickies that have the belt clips. Seem to work fine, only had them a week or so, so we will see how they hold-up over time (see what I did there?)...At 60 I found my butt had disappeared, after losing 40 lbs (much better now that it’s gone) I could not work in the woods here w/o constantly hauling on my britches, no matter how tight I coached my belt. These solved the problem, I am hooked.

Perry Y-back suspenders hook onto your existing pants belt. They are great and I use them in the field often. They are great for supporting the weight of a pistol & knife on the belt, all day yet not bulky like LBE webgear.

I've lost 70 lbs since October. Suspenders are hella handy.

    (And as @Invictvs138 mentions, Perry's Y-backs rock.)

    I modified mine a bit.
    1. On pants that have belt loops on the side that are close I ran a piece of bank line through the loops and tied it off and the hooks attach to that.
    2. Sew a piece of 550 with or without the guts inside the waistband in a horseshoe pattern.
    3. I sewed a button on the back side of the tab behind the hook is then ran cordage from the back side of the buckle and made a loop / backside has overhands so it wont pull through. Run the tab under the loop on your trousers and fold up securing it with the loop of cordage. You can leave the hook or cut it off.

How comfortable are suspenders underneath a backpack?
My first good pair of hunting pants (many moons ago) were Gore Tex 10X pants and I bought the optional button on suspenders to go with them, even though I was cash-poor and the suspenders were not cheap. Never regretted it.
Have since moved to bibs, but same idea: belt is too restrictive when climbing trees, crawling through brush, etc.
