I've learned that for me the item I use most after my knife is tape. I use it more then any cordage, safety pin or anything else in my Altoids tin. 75% of the time if I opened my tin I was after tape. I needed a better solution for easy access to tape.

This so far is for me the most practical solution for me. I ditched the Altoids tin in favor of the smaller Mentors tin.

This gives me easy access to tape because I can wrap it on the outside of the tin.

    How do you edc tape?

I wrap mine around a repurposed credit card or the like. Notch in card for tick-pullin' Card can also be shaved into tinder.

Around BIC is great idea. :dblthumb:

    Depends on the repair kit:

Dayhike/hunting, small round tube container, 18" wrapped around said tube.
Backpacking, Altoids tin, wrapped around an old plastic card until about 3/16" thick.
Canoeing, small fishing tackle box, wrapped around a pencil until it's a thick as the box.

I've seen lots of people wrap it around hiking poles, and I've seen it wrapped around nalgenes, but I can't figure out if the condensation from cold water would deteriorate the stickiness.

I tend to cut a straw, tube, plastic pen barrel, dowel, whatever's roughly 1/8" in diameter slightly longer than the width of the tape, and then wrap the ten feet or so that I need directly off the mother roll. Keeping it on the big roll cuts down on mess.

Ditto the above I have an old credit card with gorilla tape on one end and some Kevlar cord wrapped around the other where I put a small notch to make a winder. If your slick you can slip a razor blade and a needle under the tape for the added bonus of a sharp and sewing kit.

I've tried wrapping it around various things, but at the end of the day, I decided to just carry a whole roll in my pack and several in my vehicle.

---THE WHAT???!!? More info on this please!

See, I thought I was doing alright with my duct tape on a credit card. Now I see the barren wasteland my fix-it kit truly is. I must needs one of these little bastards so that I could be cool. Maybe even put some artificial sinew where that fishing line is since I'm not much of a fisher....

I carry a Bison medium size, screw top, pill cylinder on my keychain. It is wrapped with 18” of 2” Gorilla Tape. The wrap ishardly noticeable and only slightly increases bulk. I may try 24” the next time I retape it. But,that may be a hair too thick. I’ve tried the wrapped cotter-pin carry. Ditched it because the resulting cyclinder gets bent, beat-up and lint covered, FAST. Makes it hard to unroll and interferes with the adhesive.

For most other applications, EDC bag, first-aid-kits, etc. ( including my Bandana Multi-Purpose Pocket Kit, which I’ll explain in a separate post), I use flatfolls of varying length from 40” to 20’. The longer flatroll is for traveling and taping the hotel door edges closed, in case of fire.

My flat rolls are wrapped around purpose cut pieces of heavy, clear plastic, report covers, available at office supply stores or on-line. Report cover is only about 1/3 as thick as a credit card. The length of the flatroll can be adjusted as convienent for the intended kit or storage. The width of the cut plastic is ~2 1/8” . This makes it easy to roll the tape on and still have a small lip to help in keeping linty fabric away from the adhesive edges. ALL the tape on the flatroll is readily useable. This is not true of wraps ont cardboard or even tape folded over on itself to create a base for the flatroll.

Gorilla tape is sold in small rolls and I just carry the whole roll. Few things are as handy as good strong tape.

Some great ideas here. @hdbeav I like the cotter key idea! @mtngoat lam curious to here how the RIPspool works for you?

If I had to choose between 15' of cordage and 15' of 1"Gorilla tape I'm picking the tape. If I'm injured and only have on hand to use it's easier to tape something then tie it up.

I prob should add that I use a zak tool key keeper and they do not go in my pocket. Another cotter pin/tape stays in my psk, minimizes the lint, degradation concern. I think I need to try some gorilla tape.......

I also do the old credit/gift card thing. Duct tape on the one end of the card, and electrical tape wrapped around the other end. Two tapes on one card. It's still flat enough to slide most places without notice.

I made a few variations of this size spool when I had access to a mill and lathe. This one fits 1" gorilla tape.

The duct tape that I carry in small quantities is either wrapped around a credit card or BIC.

I really like the idea of wrapping it around a cotter pin!

If you want to carry the whole roll, but more compactly, try this hack. Cut the cardboard roll out of the center. Flatten the roll on itself with a pot or book bottom. Voila, a flat roll.
