How many axes do you have? I'm not talking about axe heads. I'm talking about properly hung, sharpened, and ready to use axes.

I am at 71 axes, hatchets, and hawks. I have two heads waiting to be hung and a Swiss surplus hatchet on the way. Maybe by this weekend I will have 73 or 74.

I'm really curious to see how many of the 200+ axe club have a far number of them hung and ready to use.

I have 6 axes and hatchets: A couple bigger axes, a couple small hatchets, and a couple in between.

    20170226_172009.jpg

Also a Cold Steel hawk that's not pictured. No heads without hafts as of now.

I think I have all my bases covered. I don't really feel an urge to acquire any more. That doesn't mean I'll pass on an old head to restore, though. I enjoy the process too much.

You know, Im not positive. I keep a few at work, and some at home. And it changes pretty often.
I would say that I have about 25 or so ready to go at any one time, and piles of heads. Once I get a couple dozen I just don't see the need to handle more, unless its for someone else.
I always have a few of all the bases covered.

17 that are ready to go and a single German surplus that needs a handle. I'm in pretty good shape for now.

If my wife asks, I still need one more.
Ready and waiting right now are 3 single bits in different weights and lengths, one double bit cruiser that has a mask in process, a largish hatchet, one little hatchet that also needs a mask and a tomahawk.
I also have one craptastic head on a lousy plastic handle that I managed to bust the epoxy out of and haven't gotten around to fixing in years. I'm sure I could improve it quite a bit, but I seem to be holding a grudge...

Just strictly MY axes? I've got 2 boys size, one swede and one American. 1 Kelly perfect Jersey pattern on a 30" stick. 1 Kelly cruiser double bit. Oh and two Estwings that live in the cars. I've restored easily 100 or more, but they all get sold or gifted. I'll usually keep a new axe around for a week or two to play with, but then it gets sold. I don't yet own a home so I have little use for my axes other than bushcrafting, not to mention very limited storage space for them.

    Sadly, the answer is 3.
Very optimistic regarding yard/barn/garage sales, though. This will be my first axe hunting season, and since I live in a fairly rural area I'm hoping to score some old treasures to restore.
Fingers crossed for a little Marbles hatchet from days gone by.

Had to do an actual count, and I missed by quite a bit. 44 ready to go.

    6 hatchets
    1 hewing hatchet
    1 broad axe
    12 full size singles
    5 boys axes
    2 cruisers
    14 full size doubles
    3 pulaskis

    Must be losing my memory.

Went from 3 to 4 today.
Picked up a fairly rough Warren single bit at a garage sale for $3, which also included a handful of oddball items.
The axe was sadly neglected, the handle was broken off 10" below the eye, the pole was badly mushroomed, and the edge looked serrated, lol. But she spoke to me, and let's be honest, for $3 I'd buy a lump of steel.
Spent a couple hours with a wire brush and the files, and now she's sitting in a vinegar bath, with some soft music playing in the background, thankful to have a home where someone appreciates her.
Pics tomorrow. She needs her rest.

There are 33 in this picture and it only includes the axes that I have hafted or re-hafted, or had perfectly good handles when I got them. Have 7 others good to go, but not pictured, and 10 or twelve useable axes/hatchets that I want to do some work to before putting on my regular user list. That puts me at 50, minimum.

Bad pic but there's 44 od layed out (ran out of daylight). Putting them away I noticed a few more adze heads and a dozen steel wedges I've picked up here and there. image.jpeg Counted for the first time lastnight. Come to find out I'm nearing 50, 3/4's of them are ready to go. Two I really like to use lol and half a dozen other specimens I'm eyeballing....

Pales in comparison, but I'm now up to 6:
2 hatchets, 2 boys axes, and 2 full sized.
Sadly lacking are a double bit, a quality American made hatchet (not half hatchet, got a sweet little Keen Kutter halfer), and oddly enough I still want a Pulaski.
This has become one of my most difficult to explain obsessions. The other day my wife mentioned to her sister that I was buying old axes and restoring them. Her sister dryly responded "that's not scary at all".
