How many good knives is enough? Been thinking about minimizing lately
I’ve pondered the same lately. I know what works for me in almost every situation or trip. But what could one more hurt?
i have a few sentimental knives that don't get used a whole lot, but i won't part with them. i have cheap knives that i love and don't mind using/losing. and i have a few customs that get used enough, and are loved enough to justify keeping.
still, it feels like i have more than i need, and i struggle with the idea of it a lot.
Haven't reached that number yet, I'll let everybody know if I get close.
um.....do those words go together?
Seriously, I have one I carry everyday for work, one for international travel (SAK) that I am not overly attached to and then there is the field knife problem.
Standard hiking/backpacking - Strong folder, ether ZT or DPX and a folding saw in the pack. I like in the northeast and folks tend to get tense around belt knives on hiking trails, not worth the bother
Primitive skills......I am still working it out, I have 2 lt wrights and a DPX that are all being tried out for that spot. Likely be the LTW Genesis as the win though
If we are talking about Gossman knives I want them all!
I'm the wrong guy to ask lol but the thought does cross my mind every now and then
Doubtless fewer than I have accumulated.
You have to have one of each before you truly "know" what's good or not. (I know... enabling.)
One is none, and all is one?
Well it all depends young fellar, do you have the funds for another one, or can ya borrow it? joe
I simply don’t understand the question,
Good for what? It depends on what “what” is.
You can never have too many knives. Easy answer.
I don’t have an answer for you. I’ve been thinking the same thing for a while and I still don’t have an answer for me.
Wait until you're aged and have piles of knives none of your heirs want.
Everyone must answer that for themselves. I have dozens. A couple of more to round out y collection and I'll be done.
I guess I'd be buried with them....just in case I CAN take them with me.....never know what's on the other side!
One more than you want is too many.
Dozens? A decent start. Cat litter tubs are available on the curb and stack
Depends. Some people say 1 is enough. I respect that.
One thing I love about knives is variety. Different steel, different size, different handles, different blade shapes, different grinds, different locking mechanisms (folders), and different sheath styles (fixed). For me to enjoy knives the way that I like to, I feel like a dozen is a pretty hard minimum. I like both folders and fixed blades, so in my opinion, it’s hard to experience a good range of variety with a sample size less than 10. However, I wouldn’t say that I need at least a dozen. I would, however, say that I need at least 2 knives. One fixed blade for bushcraft and one folder for around town carry (I don’t really work in an atmosphere where I can wear a leather dangler sheath on my belt every day).
After about 100 it might start to really matter. I have about half that now,
I always seem to need another one.
Never too many!
Thank God I at least know it's "want." "Need" left the building many moons ago.
That is a very personal question,
Right now I’m happy with my opinion #8 & esee3. Also a hatchet and axe to haft along with a cold steel spetsnaz. I do wish for a couple more knives but I’m in a good place right now and focusing on locking down other areas. Will I ever get more knives? Maybe, but the minimalist in me is screaming, NOOOOO!!!!
I am reducing my collection currently.
I all seriousness, I think the answer is "enough to do all your tasks". More than that are "wants", not "needs". I make an exception for family heirlooms, which may or may not be used.
If you have so many that you can’t maintain them and they start rusting, then I guess that is too many?
I don't even know. I have a lot of knives, and I keep toying with the idea of getting a couple more, because reasons. Lol. I like them. In all seriousness? I would say a piggyback system of a smaller knife + larger would cover a lot. I don't know the number of knives I own. That's too many. Lol.
Get more skills, not more knives.
but you need the knife to create the Skill so it is a win/ win BUY more Knives.
Being something of a geek, I like powers of 2 so I’m gonna say 1024. If it turns out that isn’t enough, can always bump it up to 2048. That ought to be enough.
Trying to provide a serious answer, although many smart responses suggest themselves, and excepting kitchen knives and pocket knives, I'd say six. There are 3 basic sizes and one really good one and one backup in each category is what an outdoorsman "needs" in my opinion.
There is a lot to be said for minimalism as a life philosophy, since life isn't about things ultimately. Furthermore, although a person skilled with a knife can probably function well with many knives, I think one's skills are enhanced by using the same knife repeatedly. This is along the lines of the old cliché: "Fear the man with one gun...".
Having said that it's only fair to admit that I probably have 10 times that number and that trying many knives is fun. But I don't want to confuse that with what's really necessary.
Do good and avoid sin.
I know I need to reduce my collection. As I get older, the 'you can't take it with you' thoughts come into my head more often, and I think there are other things I should spend that $$ on, or simply put it into savings rather than have it tied up in knives and guns.
I heard someone say years ago- "if you collect, make your collection look like a collection and not an accumulation." I know at times my knives look more like an accumulation so I definitely need to downsize.
