...what non-Mora knife would you buy as a knock around beater knife? For the sake of discussion, we'll say saving a little longer for something better is off the table. :)

For my non-Mora needs Kiridashi's get lots done.... they open mail, do some basic carving, are very pocket-able, and generally perform like a robust utility knife.

That said, right at that price point I have a little beater in a right handed chisel grind ordered from @08H3 of Plainsmen Knives. Not a very big knife but I don't need much edge length to get tough work done. :)

I’ve picked up the following, used, for $50 or less, and all of them are great knock-around knives.

    Gerber LMF II
    Buck Nighthawk
    Ontario bolt knife
    Kabar USMC
    ESEE 3, 4

They are pretty common and easy to find

I have not played with one but I hear the gerber prodigy is nice and those are cheap used.

@Mr. Tettnanger has a two buck knife deal listed for $60. Two high quality blades for a cheap price.

The other suggestions are all pretty much spot on, too.

    Condor Bushlore.
Great sheath, good shape, sharpens easily and holds an edge fairly well.
For a budget knife it’s hard to beat.

Schrade schf42D. Less than $50 for a full tang 1095 5” blade, full flat grind. Taiwan made. It’s a ton of knife for the money. Fit and finish is better than most of the Condors I have, and I like the 1095 a bit more than Condors 1075.

Cold Steel Bushman is a good value and you’d still have a few bucks left for an Opinel or SAK to pair it with.

The Gerber strong arm is hard to beat for about $50. But I'd probably go down to Menards and pick up a Buck 119 for $53. Wal-Mart also carries the Buck Mesa which has a full tang and micarta handle slabs for about $45.

Since you didn't specify a size, I'm going with a Cold Steel Kukri Machete. I have the Magnum version and would like to try out the smaller one too some time.

Dude, you're not grasping the concept. Get her to cough up another fifty bucks, buy an eighty five dollar knife, a bottle of Gallo, a tub of macaroni salad, and one of those grocery store rotisserie chickens and you're hittin' on all cylinders! ;)

I'd buy an 12" or 18" Latin Machete, as they have the most uses in my area (mountain riparian ecosystem). A small SAK with a saw and can-opener can be had for 20-25 bucks, so the combined total would still be <$50.

I normally pack an 18" machete and small SAK w/saw for detail and utility work. This allows me to keep a razor's edge on the SAK while using the machete for trail (blackberry) clearing and working large pieces of wood.

Under 50 is a little tough IMO - lots of GREAT knives just out of that price range.

Still, I'd be looking at Kabars (you can find the rubber handled ones for around $50 I think) and Ontarios. Jet pilot knife is under $50 with some beer change. The Ontario Kabar is the Marine issue if I recall correctly and a fair bit cheaper than the kabar brand, haven't used one personally. The Ontario SP line has several kabar-like/sized knives if I recall right.

If going for something a little bigger, Ontario SP5 and SP10 can be had for around $50. Both very capable, but the SP5 is more useful IMO.

    Happy freedom day!
