Greetings everyone. As the thread title states, it's time for the Alabama boys to pick up the slack and host a meet. To my knowledge, the last one we had here was put together by @Subdood in the Talladega National Forest. Since then, we've been hosted by the local legend @T. Pollock a couple times as well as @abwillingham and @Tennessee. These were all great times for friends, family, experts and novices alike.

I would like to extend the invitation to everyone (and gauge the interest) to have a meet in the Oct-Nov timeframe on a new piece of property my family and I were blessed to acquire near Rockford, Alabama, which is in the middle-ish of the State. We have just a bit under 30 acres, with frontage on Hatchet Creek.

    Rockford1.JPG

We are currently cleaning up the property, cutting brush, etc. There should be plenty of deadfall available for firewood, and I will likely cut some this spring to season over the summer as well. This property is a bit out of town, but we do have power. We do not have a well yet, so the only water source available is the creek. Just throwing that out there for full disclosure.

Rules will be the same as with previous meets:

1). Alcohol consumption is fine, in moderation. Anyone not abiding by this rule will leave.
2). Firearms should remain in your vehicles or otherwise controlled in accordance with law. No shooting is planned for this meet.

I realize this is a bit farther south than the last meet, so I hope our previous Tennessee hosts will be able to make it, as well as the friends we've had the fortune to make over the last few years. All are welcome. Feel free to bring family and kids as well.

Hopefully it will be cooling off by then. If there is enough interest, I'll try to put up one of those fancy RSVP things. Hope to see you all there.

I would like to offer my appreciation of the time & effort that goes into organizing these meetups and the kind offer of people to use their land.

All things being equal, dates, health etc. I would also like to register an interest in this gathering.

Meant to add some photos with the original post, but had to download and sort a bunch off my phone.

Here is a shot of the creek from the bridge upstream of us. It's a popular spot for canoeing and kayaking.
    20190314_162641.jpg

Fire ring down near the creek before leaf out
    20190307_154508.jpg

Bigger fire pit up on the hill
    20190323_080801.jpg

Small set of falls down below us
    20190330_110606.jpg
Plenty of woods & hills to roam.
    20190414_151344.jpg

Several nice spots to camp, plenty of trees for hammocking. Fishing is probably easier from a canoe or kayak where I am, but there is a nice open spot a few hundred yards away that a good friend of mine owns. Hope to see you all this fall. Give me a shout if you have any questions.

Put me on the 'maybe' list. I still use the spoon I carved at the last AL meet--thanks to the excellent instructions of Paul Foreman!

Sounds like a great Idea to me. I planned to attend the meet @Tennessee hosted, however, a perfect storm of work and family issues coupled with health issues wrecked my plans. That said, good Lord willing I will attend.

Just got through with the calendar scrub and it looks like OCT 25-28 would be a good weekend. That's a Friday-Monday, so folks can come a bit early or stay a bit later or both as their schedules may allow.

Are there any major schedule conflicts out there for this date? It's still quite a ways out, so I hope everybody that would like to come is still open.

Haven't heard anything to the contrary, so I'm locking in the dates. Oct 25-28 as originally posted, and added to the event calendar.

    Hope to see everyone there.

Also, in case any are interested in kayaking/canoeing, I have been told it's about a 4 hour trip (obviously depending on flow) from where we are to the take out near Lake Mitchell (roughly 9 miles by water). I haven't made it that far down yet myself though. We could definitely arrange a pickup if folks are interested. Map attached below.

I just got a heads-up from @Bonekrakker on this, I missed it completely. Looks like a lot of good friends and buddies will be there, it would be a shame if I didn't crash the party.
I sent the link to @Rumsy, we should be able to make it, Good Lord willing

Good to hear man! I'm looking forward to it myself.

The heat has been pretty miserable. Between that and a bout of Lyme, I haven't been able to get out as much as I'd wanted to this summer. A bit behind on firewood cutting, but theres plenty deadfall around to be had, and I've still got a bit here at the house I can bring up. Should be good.

So ready for a break in the heat. I cant stand being cooped up in the house.

Also had a question about tomahawks and traditional archery. These are absolutely fine. I was only saying no firearms for this one. I dont have a formal range set up yet.

I'm still getting out, here and there; mainly "glamping" with the family and such. But, as enjoyable as that is, it just isn't the same as 'bushcraft camping'. Tried camping in the backyard a few weeks back, but it was ungodly hot, humid, muggy, bugs were crazy, etc. Gave up on that idea pretty damn quick. Wife also seems to have something planned for EVERY weekend as well. HAven't had time to do any bushcraft stuff at all. Plus work, life, etc etc etc.

Sorry to hear about the medical situation. I hope all is well and you're doing good!

I hear ya man. Lol. We've been super busy too. My son isn't quite driving age yet, and hes been having practice for track EVERY DAY during the week. Even in this heat. Take him over there right after work. The weekend of the meet is literally the only weekend this fall he doesn't have a track meet.

Doing pretty well at the moment, thanks. Finished up 3 weeks of antibiotics a couple weeks ago. Still have some lingering effects, but not as bad as it was. Have a follow up scheduled in a couple weeks.
