Thanks for the heads up. I've been hoping that Massdrop would set up a drop with Heavy Cover for a while. Disappointed to see this drop is with Keith Ti directly, rather than through Heavy Cover, but I don't know what the business arrangements between HC, KTi and MD all look like, so maybe what I was hoping for isn't possible.

The only difference is the label so going thru HC would just be adding an extra step that perhaps MD doent see as necessary. Thanks for this heads up. I have wanted a 2nd ti canteen set for a while but just couldn't justify the cost until now. It would have been nice to support Heavy Cover but....

The Heavy Cover version ships with the plastic canteen top and the TI top, I don’t see the plastic top in the drop. I have the HC version and love them. I use my canteens / cups daily and the act of screwing the TI top on can be annoying due to the squeak / grind sound of the two TI pieces moving against each other. When I go into the woods I switch out the canteen tops. The plastic tops are available from HC at a very reasonable price ( I have spares of both tops) . This set regardless of HC version or direct from Keith is the real deal and pretty much flawless in design and use. IMG_5415.JPG

That makes sense for MD. My hope is that HC didn't just pay Keith to manufacture the canteen set for them, but that the deal allowed payment in the other direction/some sort of kickback every time Keith itself sells the product HC designed. But the exact specifics of these business deals probably aren't public, so I doubt I'll ever get an answer to my wonderings.

My understanding was that a Kleen Kaneen plastic lid fit the HC canteen. Does anyone know if they fit the Keith as well? I'm assuming both branded Ti canteens are exactly the same?

Kleen Kanteen top that I have is same thread and diameter but longer, seems to fit but would need to be cut down to seal. IMG_6793.JPG

Thank you. I've been reading about the HC/Keith setup for the past hour - trying to make a decision on this drop. An after market plastic lid is a consideration.

Thanks to the OP as well for posting this deal.

The issue that bothers me is that titanium cooking gear is routinely praised by vendors for being a "Rapid heat conductor , less gas/fuel and faster boil time."

Titanium is notably a poor conductor of heat - less than one-third to one-tenth as conductive as aluminum. Only slightly better than some stainless steel.

So strong for it's weight? Sure. Heat conductive? Not so much. That's why high-speed aircraft wings are made of it.

Let's see, where is my foxhole?

I don't think HC designed it. I'm pretty sure they just buy from Keith and use Keith's branding services to have their logo added and then resell.

Good deal, thanks for sharing! this just saved me $50.00 from ordering the Heavy Cover and this looks like it comes with a carrier too.

I think titatanium conducts heat in cook ware well because it is so thin. Buddy and I spent 3 months one cold spring working and alcohol stove designs. It became apparent that to get any useful heat from the stoves that the metal pots needed to be very thin for acceptable boil times.

Ever try one of those corrugated metal things that goes around the outside of the vertical surfaces of a pot?

That's a steel. You can rarely get a second hand in decent shape under 120.00 with HC.

My wife and I both now use a HC just so to its packability and lid and lightweight.

I got mine for mybirthday a little over a year ago and I bought hers second hand on this forum.

I think if the price point stayed at 99.99 plus shipping. He would push hundreds of people to pull the trigger and get one!

I guess Keith did it first.

    Regardless I love my HC

I've tried a couple of lids, Klean Kanteen and others but never had any joy with them. I bought a Keith one on Amazon, cheapest price I could get, and it's great. I've opted for a second one via Massdrop.

Oh and the pouch that came with it a digital camo affair was a bit pants. I bought Centerline's 'Mother' canteen carrier and it's the biz.

That sounds like it should be true for that application.

If you are boiling water, the water distributes the heat by convection, yes? Like the fluid air in a conventional air mattress in the cold.

If you are right, and I am no scientist, why would a thin aluminum pan not work better in heating the fluid as it conducts heat up to 10 x as well as titanium?

For real cooking - as in simmering - I have found a thicker bottom spreads heat better than a thin bottom. ????

I think it has to do with multiple factors. Will Aluminum boil water faster than Ti? Probably but it will be crushed and impart nasty flavors unless coated with something which now changes the weight and probably heating properties. It's the many advantages of Ti that makes it better than using Aluminum.

If the pot material's base is the same thickness I think it would be hard to tell the difference in heating times for boiling water. Titanium pots seem geared toward ultra light uses and so are very thin because of the strength of titanium. I do have a cheap, easly dented, stainless pot and it does work well for heating water. The worst I have used is the super thick MRS pots. Like you pointed out if your actually trying to cook a meal more complicated than just boiling water a thicker bottom is very nice for even cooking without the hotspots.

As for the metal ring that surrounds a pot to speed boiling, I have used one when I was younger and I thought I enjoyed camping in the mountains in the winter were the water source was melted snow. It takes a lot of energy, fuel, to melt snow so any little advantage in efficiency makes a large difference in the weight one must carry.

When we were doing the alcohol stove trials the design we found that worked best was a beer can cut off about 2 inches from the base and then surroned by a titanium wind screen that also works as a pot stand. By far the most efficient way to boil water on an alcohol stove.

Anodized aluminum is used in commercial cookware. What does it add in weight, I wonder.

Surely, Ti is tougher and stronger weight-for-weight than aluminum. Is it harder?

I'm very thankful to have gotten in on this drop. I was able to pick up the plastic canteen Lids at heavy cover for $2 a piece plus shipping. The only bummer is I will have the plastic lids before the canteens get here! lol

Happy with the canteen but always knew I was probably just going to toss the pouch - the canteen barely fits into it anyways, and I can't imagine getting a canteen out of there periodically as I would be trying to walk. My favorite pouch for the complete system is the Emdom USA 4x4 GP pouch.

Massdrop says they are working on a solution but apparently there was a problem with the military pattern of the original pouch as far as Customs is concerned.

Heck yes, man. Me too. They're also issuing a $5 "coupon" to your Massdrop account. I'm sure it's going to everyone who was part of this drop. That's like getting an HC Canteen Kit for $75, minus a plastic cap and the "HC" Logo. I'll take it!

It's been brought to our attention that due to a miscommunication error at the drop's set up, you have received a different case than what was displayed on the drop page. We reached out to our vendor to inquire for replacements and have been told the pictured cases have been discontinued and we will not be able to source these units. You have our deepest apologies for the inconvenience this may cause.
We're doing all we can to make the situation right.

If you want to keep the case that was received, we've issued a $20 partial refund to the payment method you've used to join the drop. Please allow 1-3 days for the funds to restore to your account.

If you’d prefer to return what you received for the remainder of your refund, please let us know by replying to this message and someone will be happy to help you out.

A $5 Massdrop coupon has been added to your account as well. It will remain active for a year, during checkout it will automatically apply as a discount the next time you join a drop. Please note that it is good for one-time use which means that there won’t be a remaining balance.

Don't be afraid to reply with any questions or concerns.

If anyone don't like the pouch let me know and I'll buy or trade for it. Would love to get another. I wasn't buying for the pouch but ended up liking it especially after the $20 rebate. Wow made a titanium canteen kit well under a hundo.

So I have to say that Massdrop's customer service is fantastic. They always respond either same-day or next-day. They said it was a mistake and have issued the refund for the remaining canteens that I bought.
