Took off after work and headed 6 hours north.

Had a crazy storm on the way up.

My dad hasn't been to Tahquamenon fall so we checked out upper and lower falls and hand lunch at the brewery.

Ive never knew how remote some of the U.P. really was. Using the Gaia app on my phone and taking over an hour on dirt roads that went from 2 lane to single lane and then to skinny single/two track. We took my dads Ridgeline and where afraid we were going to get it stuck. It handled the loose sand very well actually.

Ended up coming to a dead end and didn't really have a plan on where to camp. There was a hill that we decided to climb to see where we could set up camp.

    The view of Superior

    Trail we came down

Ended up find a place just off the North Country Trail and Superior was only 200 yards away. The weather was 65 during the day and low 50's at night. Had a good breeze coming off superior so bugs where never an issue.

Rest of the day was relaxing, collecting firewood and eating way too well...

Ended up looking for Florescent sodalite/Yooperlites that night and found a good amount.

I wasn't able to get any photos of the stars but I don't think I have ever seen a sky so full of them. The moon came out around midnight as we finished up looking for rocks.

Had bacon and eggs the next morning.
    fullsizeoutput_23c5.jpeg

We then hiked the beach and did some exploring.

My dad had got into rock hounding a couple years ago. This is something he use to do with my grandpa back in the day. I thought it was pretty cool to be doing the same thing with my dad.

Anyways I found my first agate.

    E+lkWHAJR7uCNUOcZWdBlQ.jpg
    m6vs9XBdRZS%b9AUDFhL1w.jpg

Didn't really know what I was looking for or what an agate is. If anyone is interested https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_Superior_agate

Ended up trying some fishing in the afternoon. Not really knowing where we going to try and access the river. We did some scouting and finally got down to the river.

    35FisB%cSqynki+p7rKE5A.jpg

Found some snacks on the way

    WsCFTr7qRbCNjpqyZ8%SHQ.jpg

Finally got there. The river was beautiful and made up for the lack of fish I caught. Had a couple of hits and had one up to me but shook off...

    aWeBrDtmR62MoMzq9jzBOg.jpg

A quick nap in the hammocks left us hungry for dinner. Corn cooked in the husk and some smoked pulled pork filled us up as we sat around the fire waiting for another night of looking for glowing rocks.

    AI4B1CNARRSguabWlxQ28g.jpg

Hiking down to a new spot we found some wolf tracks(I believe). My hand is 8.5" or so.

    fullsizeoutput_23e1.jpeg

Ended up thinking we hit the jackpot of rocks. Ended up someone was shooting clay pigeons on the beach.

    bfkqfsVeQrieab9dX2lNLQ.jpg

Ended up packing up the next morning and headed home.

I now realize how much more exploring of the U.P. I have. I can't wait for the next trip.

    Thanks for following along.

    Beautiful. Thanks for sharing.

That's the thing with Texas - lots of nice, varied destinations in Texas, but if you want to go anywhere else, it's a two day drive just to leave the state, much less get to where you're going. All these other areas are so much harder to visit; really nice to be able to experience them vicariously (and enviously) through threads like this.

The UP is a wonderful place. I grew up on the very western tip of the UP. Spent 12 years ambling around the world with the Army then moved back and went back to school. Now I live in central Minnesota going to school. When I graduate this time I plan on moving back to the area if not in the UP right across the border in Northern Wisconsin. Currently I am finishing up a summer living out of my camper in the UP. Everyday I am out, I am struck with how lucky I am to live in such a beautiful area. I have lived all over the world, and will always consider myself a Yooper.

Nice write up and photos,,, thanks for sharing.

And now I’m thinking of the many many times I’ve passed through the UP on my way to someplace else, and never stopped for more than fuel, a snack, or a quick photo. In point of fact, I drove the length of the UP twice the week of July 17th,,, just gas and go... Real loss on my part...

I actually wrote a paper on the Duck Lake Fire when I was in school for Forestry Sciences for my Wildland Fire class. Indeed one of Michigan's largest and believe it or not originated with a controlled burn that got out of hand.

Multiple sources said it was caused by a lightning strike, no mention of controlled burn.

You may be right. I was wrong. I wrote my paper on the Mack Lake Fire. That was five years ago and as my gunsmithing instructor says "My 'forgetter' is getting better."

I thought that might be the case and I remember the burn, but I didn't have first hand knowledge of the fire.

I'm glad you enjoyed exploring that area of the U.P. It's a fantastic place well worth your time for future jaunts!
