Made an appointment with the vet to have Retta my beagle put to sleep She is 15 and her health is fading fast . Hurts to see her go , hurts more to see her suffer :( next Saturday is the Day . Growing up with hunting dogs I have had many dogs But you only get blessed with a couple really special ones . She is special . going to be a rough week but it gives me time to love on her and prepare a resting place for her .
God blessed me with her for 12 years time to give her back :17:

Loosing a dog that has given so much through the years is one of life's toughest deals and thoughts are with you.

You have both made each others' live better. Never easy to go through this but I'm sure she knows how much she is loved and how much you mean to her. God bless your pet and God bless you for giving her the best life imaginable.

I will make it . The only other option is lets her suffer , Can't do that . I will hold her till the end , shed some tears , lay her to rest in a blanket my wife made for her . Then I will thank my Lord for Blessing me with a sweet little hound for 12 years.

I've done the last act a number of times. I know what it means. I wish dogs lasted longer. And I wish I was as good a man as they thought I was.
My heart goes out to you.

I've been there bud, and I'll be there again. My heart goes out to you, but you have to remember, the only people who are assured to never lose one, are the people who are never blessed with one. I'm glad you are at peace with it.

I'm so sorry @plumberoy . :( What a hard choice to make. I'm glad you get to spend a little bit more time together. I hope it's a good week for her, with lots of treats and belly rubs.

Sorry to hear it, always tough to lose a good friend. We have an old cattle dog and it is looking like this will be her last summer. It is always difficult for us.

In your sleep, May you hear Retta sounding off as she playfully romps through fields carpeted with heavenly rabbit br'er. And may you awake with a smile on your face. Amen. Doc.

I had to put my hunting buddy down back in January after being my best friend for many years. He was a blue weimaraner named Duke. Excellent dog, and I miss him daily.

I'm sorry for anyone to have to go through it, and it is so hard, but the pain eases with time and you'll still have your memories.

Sit with her and talk quietly to her Roy, tell her of your decision, you can rest assured they understand more than we will ever know.. If she could answer she would thank you for caring enough for her to make the decision and not allowing her suffer. and her spirit will remain with you forever.

Sorry for you brother. One of my wishes would be for a dogs lifespan to be as long as ours and I wish it often as our family is lucky to have one of those special dogs.

Very sorry to hear that. The hardest part about sharing out lives with dogs is how short their lives are. I lost my best friend unexpectedly a year ago on Fathers Day morning. Needless to say with today being Fathers Day I've been reminiscing about some of our time spent roaming the woods together. They always leave us with great memories.

It's hard, and that is a huge understatement. I'm sorry that she must go but I'm happy she had the chance to stay. I'm unsure of when I'll have another dog, it's a hot knife to lose someone that is that good on so many levels.

Best of luck to you brother, remember the puppy!

The fact that you are hurting so much over this means that she has given you so much happiness over the years. I've been thru this before, too. After a while of mourning, the best thing to do is open you heart to a new dog, and start a new chapter of life.

Although they didn't come from a shelter I bought Retta and a male Beagle named C.J. to get them away from an abusive owner. they were skinny and not well taken care of, C.J. was hit by a car while running a rabbit several years ago . We have a cur/feist we rescued from the pound He is mamma's dog I will get another dog . I just need a while and need to find the right new friend.
I am doing better now , Retta isn't suffering any more that was what was tearing my heart out .
Thanks for the prayers and kind words
    Roy

George Graham Vest made this speech in 1855. It was given in court while representing a man who sued another for the killing of his dog. During the trial, Vest ignored the testimony, and when his turn came to present a summation to the jury, he made the following speech and won the case.

    ____________________________

"Gentlemen of the Jury: The best friend a man has in the world may turn against him and become his enemy. His son or daughter that he has reared with loving care may prove ungrateful. Those who are nearest and dearest to us, those whom we trust with our happiness and our good name may become traitors to their faith. The money that a man has, he may lose. It flies away from him, perhaps when he needs it most. A man's reputation may be sacrificed in a moment of ill-considered action. The people who are prone to fall on their knees to do us honor when success is with us, may be the first to throw the stone of malice when failure settles its cloud upon our heads.

The one absolutely unselfish friend that man can have in this selfish world, the one that never deserts him, the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous is his dog. A man's dog stands by him in prosperity and in poverty, in health and in sickness. He will sleep on the cold ground, where the wintry winds blow and the snow drives fiercely, if only he may be near his master's side. He will kiss the hand that has no food to offer. He will lick the wounds and sores that come in encounters with the roughness of the world. He guards the sleep of his pauper master as if he were a prince. When all other friends desert, he remains. When riches take wings, and reputation falls to pieces, he is as constant in his love as the sun in its journey through the heavens.

If fortune drives the master forth, an outcast in the world, friendless and homeless, the faithful dog asks no higher privilege than that of accompanying him, to guard him against danger, to fight against his enemies. And when the last scene of all comes, and death takes his master in its embrace and his body is laid away in the cold ground, no matter if all other friends pursue their way, there by the graveside will the noble dog be found, his head between his paws, his eyes sad, but open in alert watchfulness, faithful and true even in death."

    George Graham Vest - c. 1855

This thread has completely brought me to tears, I just became a new dog daddy 8 months and I understand fully how close one can get to their dog. I didn't really get why it took my dad over a decade to get another dog after his last one died before I was born, now I think I understand. My condolences to you and your family. Your girl will be missed and cherished. Reading this has made me play harder with Nero knowing that time is much shorter than I think. Thank you, this has moved me so much, and soon all you will have is the good memories. Hang in there man.

I've also shed a tear and this thread has reminded me of all the best friends I've lost. Right now there are two more of my best friends with me. One of them rests her head on my foot and the other is on the sofa with me with his head on my thigh.
Take your time and you'll have another buddy that will make you laugh and your heart will heal.
I am so sorry for such a loss from your life.

About June of 1970, I came home from college for the summer just when my dad was coming home from having my beagle buddy Ginger put down. I sat down on the ground next to his car and said a few words to her, then dug a grave for her and put her in. I still get choked up thinking about that day.

The best thing is to remember the comical and fun moments with her, but the sad part stays too. The best medicine is another little partner. Good luck connecting with your next one.

It's never easy to do. I have chills in my spine from reading this and knowing exactly the way you are feeling. My Border Collie, who adopted ME rather than the other way around, was hit by a truck on memorial day 2 years ago. I was literally in shock for days. Couldn't eat, couldn't sleep.... but..... time passes and after awhile I saw this on Craigslist:

And my heart was on the mend. Shasta has been with me since the day after I saw this pic. 8 hours of driving and a few hundred dollars later and I had a new girl. Fate led us to each other, of that I have no doubt.

This is the beautiful girl she grew up to be:

I feel your pain, but you know, as does everyone here, that saying goodbye to a friend is as much a part of life as saying hello to a new one.

My deepest sympathy, it is never an easy thing to do. As I write this I am looking at my friend, he is 11 and remembering the ones before him. Dogs certainly remind us of all that is good and noble in this world.

I drove 2 hours one way today to look at a beagle female about 1 year old in need of a home
She is laying at my feet . She has already ran a squirrel up a tree and I had to drag her away. She is smart too .

So very sorry. She will be waiting for you in the big, fluffy dog bed in the sky. The members of BCUSA are very understanding when it comes to our four legged friends. A very painful experience indeed.
