The 2nd Annual BCUSA Eastern/Central Maine Winter Meet will take place Saturday, Feb. 3 at the Baker Brook Campsite, Great Pond Mountain Wildlands, Orland, Maine (www.greatpondtrust.org ). The meet will officially begin at 0930 and will wrap up at 1500. Camping is available onsite, but if you do wish to camp, please notify me or @Zanimal so we can inform the administrators of the property as their rules require.
Parking is at the north gate of the Wildlands on Bald Mountain Rd., and the site is a .7 mile walk on a very level, well kept trail. Reference DeLorme Atlas, map 23, D-4. BCUSA signage will be posted. Site map below:

The site has an ample fire ring, and features an excellent shelter...

We had a great meet up at this location last year, I hope to see many of you there! Feel free to PM me with any questions.

Just over three weeks out, giving this a bump. I've heard from several forum members who have said they're coming, as well as a few non-members who are some pretty awesome folks. Should be a stellar time!

Correction to directions. The parking area is actually on Bald Mountain Rd. I just discovered my mistake, the road changes names at an intersection a very short distance east of this location, where it is Winkumpaugh Rd. My apologies for any confusion this may have caused. The directions in the original post have been corrected. Beyond that, the WX continues to look favorable (if cool) and plans are falling into place nicely. See you there!

Looking at rain to start Friday off then changing to snow. I am not expecting much for accumulation. Could be surprised, though.

All three "weather guessers" that I consult call for any precipitation ending Friday afternoon, with clear skies Friday night. I think we'll be fine. Dress for cold blustery conditions though. @Zanimal suggested we bring a tarp to rig a wind break, I can do that.

@Zanimal would be the better guy to answer that than me. If conditions are the same there as they are downeast, I don't think we'll need them. Might chuck some aboard just in case. I've got numerous pairs, I'll bring a few extras. We can always leave them in the vehicles if they're not necessary.

Looks like I am in. I don't have snowshoes though so that could be a problem. Having never been to one of these shindigs is there anything I should know or plan on bringing?

Just a local update for anyone coming in tomorrow. I am about 25 minutes from the site and the snow has been coming pretty steady the last couple days, but it has also been pretty warm. In my yard I have about 7 or 8 inches of snow, so there shouldn't be much need for snow shoes. I was on the trail a couple weeks ago and it was quite well packed the day after a storm. I would bring shoes if you have them just in case, but if you don't you will be able to walk on the trail pretty easily. If anyone needs anything, or has questions about the area, I will leave this logged in all day or contact me on my email. I work later tonight, but plan on being out there early as possible so I could meet people if they are in need of a guide to the land. My email if it isn't showing up is mainesurvivalsolutions@gmail.com . Can't wait to meet you all and share time with a good bunch of like minded people.

More concerned about the driving then walking. The south entrance has patches of slick ice on the trail. I'll be packing Stabilicers / Yaktracks.
Weather looks great! Looking forward to it.

Well I made the great sacrifice and went up to GMPCT to check conditions.
I'm sorry to report, none of you folks would have liked it... Sunny, mid teens, 1-4" fresh snow. Not quite enough to cover all the ice on the road, but easily walkable.
Place was crawling with people... parking lot was a sea of yellow license plates.

Gang , I guess I should do what the Doc says.
Really feel bad , but there will be more. Get my self stronger. Enjoy the day, stay warm and safe. Get some great pics too. Maybe a later spring meet after the mud . :( But know it’s probably the best not to push it .

    Enjoy

@mainewoods , recognizing your limits and working within them is as much a part of being a good woodsman as being able to start a fire. Nothing here is worth getting hurt over. Will post a report this evening.
