@Sbrody and I kept the tradition alive and made a trip up to his dry cabin in Maine last weekend.

Aside from hoping to do a little fishing and just get out in the woods, we also wanted to improve camp and "build something"

We generally leave after work and make the 10 hour drive through the night to avoid traffic. That means we usually arrive in a mixed state of groggy and excited to be away...

Last year when we arrived the lake was so low we had to use canoes and walk to camp.

Luckily this year there was just enough to use the boat

    Unload the truck
Put the boat in the water
    Put motor on boat
    Load boat
    Go!

We couldn't have asked for better weather and seeing the early fall colors was an added bonus. I was tired of the constant rain and humidity at home.

    1005181740a~2.jpg

After all the usual arrival routine we did manage some fishing from shore.

    @Sbrody had some luck

And of course we have to eat good

    1005181948a~2.jpg

Day 2 we set off on the boat to do some more fishing and a security sweep of some other camps.

    1006181326.jpg

Not so much luck on the fishing, but the camps were all ok, we did some exploring, and got to witness a plane land on the lake.

Then it was back to camp for lunch.

Then it was messing around in camp with various tools, processing wood, preping some spoon blanks...

    1006181731.jpg

    1006181737.jpg

These cold steel shovels are wicked! Digs, chops, de-limbs, and make a nice ringing "schwing" sound when in action...

    1006181741c.jpg

    A future spoon.

Then it was back to fishing. Once again @Sbrody had the magic touch.

While I had an Alone moment, losing the fish just as it was almost on the beach.

For night activities @Sbrody decided to set up some new hammocks for testing. I messed around with roughing out a spoon and burning in the bowl.

    Testing chair mode.

Day 3 We decided to try building something. There were a good number of standing dead poles (Fir maybe?) and some birch to thin out.

The first idea was a Teepee, but level space was an issue. So we decided on a shelter near the fire to use in the rain, in winter, and for extra sleeping space.

The design for the shelter was just a rough idea we had, but it came together pretty well.

    1007182304.jpg

We still have some work to do on the next trip, but I think it was a good addition to camp.

    More tool experiments.

Despite multiple set-up variations, it continued to lose important bits during use - a design flaw. I have some ideas on how to fix it, but will save for another post.

Alas Monday we had to pack up and hit the road for the long journey home.

And a long journey it was, complete with traffic delays (hours long), rain, and general nonsense.

Luckily we discovered this place near Portland.

I highly recommend stopping by if you like meat and beer.

I think @Sbrody has more trip photos to add, but that was it for me.

    More of the fish...
This first one was a fighter. I hooked him on the second cast but he got away as I was pulling him out of the water. I hooked him again and he escaped a second time! I didn't give up and amazingly I got him.
The second fish is a beauty. 20181006_174446.jpg 69296.jpeg I like randomly inserting pictures of food.
