    Hello all,

In a discussion the other day with @Seahunter he mentioned practicing making feather sticks daily for a month. I really like the idea so I have decided to spend the next two weeks making a daily feather stick and lighting it with a ferro rod. My goal is simple, work on a perishable skill for bushcrafting. Please feel free to play along. It would be awesome to see the knife/tool and the feathers you get. They don't need to be pretty curls just post something.

Today's feather stick was brought to you by my edc folder and the ferro rod was a gift from @gohammergo :

    Please join in.

    Thank you for looking,

    Coyote

I will play. It will be interesting to see how we progress over time. The last time I did this I saw a big improvement in my ability to make feathers.

Day 1: Willow and a bolt knife:

    Boxelder and a bolt knife:
    DSC_3687.JPG

I have found that selecting the right piece of wood makes a huge difference. But until today I didn't realize how good the inside of a stick can carve when the outside is too crumbly to make a feather. I would have just moved on to another stick based on how this boxelder carved from the outside, but I split it down and the inside carved nicely.

Always cool to see the bolt knife in action. Good to know about splitting the wood. I started with spilt wood above but I find valley oak a hard material to make feather sticks with. Need to go out and try some other types of wood.

It’s a lot of relaxing fun too. I’ll probably join you guys.
Maybe I’ll do it with different knives and different woods.

That's my plan too. Pick a knife, pick a branch, and make a feather stick.

Lighting feathers is something else I need to practice. It was stormy and humid out, so I was happy to get these lit!

    Hello all,

    Here is day two:

The knife is a Condor Bushlore that came in a box from @Teeps . It is my only scandi grind knife and is fun to use. The wood is a magnolia branch. I found the shape of the branch made it more challenging. I'm going to try to spilt something for tomorrow's go.

I am a day late but always up for a challenge. Especially one that makes me learn something. Here is day one for me. Custom D2 steel blade made by the wonderful @bladesmith3 . Can't really see the flame in the second pic, but it was there to the right. Thanks for a good idea CC!

Come join in for sure! One of the greatest things I have been told was from @OMRebel in a private convo about going after the hardwoodsman challenges. He basically said (paraphrased) "You might as well do it. Worst case scenario you still learned something."

I like it to. The original maker is @leightyj2 and I got it from @gohammergo. It had some experience on it when I got it but I have put some miles on it too.

Serechete and the other end of that maple stick from yesterday :) I wondered how the serechete would do - the weight of it practically carved the feathers on its own! I like this thing :D

Day 3 is a Rich V knife and a piece of poplar (I think). I've made feathers with poplar before and didn't care for it, but I'm gonna have to reevaluate that opinion!

    Day three:

So like I mentioned in day two I went to split something down first: f.jpg g.jpg

I used the @Teeps Condor Bushlore and some maple. It really helped to make the feathers from the split. I'm going to try splitting it down further tomorrow:

    h.jpg i.jpg j.jpg k.jpg

    @HannahT @Teeps @MrFixIt @Seahunter totally awesome seeing the progression!

@Coyote Charlie in all fairness and honesty that box has been sitting on the back of my desk at work. I'll grab a stick and start feathering during conference calls.

That is a cool looking knife @Bushcraft-kelso and very nice looking feathers.

    Day 3:
This wood didn't want to curl today.

But on my 5th attempt I got some curls.

    Day four:

This feather was brought to you by my bolt knife. As mentioned above I really like this knife but had the darndest time getting a feather stick with it. This was the third wood I tried. I think it is cedar.
