We got five ducklings on Saturday.

When I got home from work tonight, one duckling was struggling in the pool (a dishpan), all sodden and nonboyant, having trouble getting out. I scooped him (?) up and dried him off, then canoodled and held till he stopped shivering. Then he clambered up on my shoulder like my cockatiel used to do. Didn't want to go back to the Enclosure. I feel pretty bonded.

    Congratulations on the litter!

I would affix little leashes to the buggers and take them for a walk.

I think we will take walks. Hope leashes won’t be needed. They will need to learn the route down to the creek and the still pool.

That is the coolest pic I've seen in awhile. Man, do I miss having duckys... I really think he bonded with you and ya have a good lil pal right there.
Quick story...when I was a kid, dad got us some Ducky's and a few chicks. One chick turned into a giant rooster. Rhode island red/ rock hen I think. Anyway, is take this rooster into my lil tree house/fort deal I made. I'd carry rooster around like a kitten. No worries. Friendlest rooster ya ever saw. Really something. Dog got him later...

I had a mallard duck when I was a kid that used to whip the neighbors poodles ass every time he'd stray into our yard. One of our cat's had a litter of kittens in the ducks so-called house/pen and the only thing that came and went out of that house till them kittens was up and about was that mamma cat. Mom always said it was smarter than any dog we ever had.

I sympathize with you on the cockatiel @BradGad. I've had several of them. Great birds! :D

Brad, love that duck. Our last duck was born in 2004. Here’s a pic of her.

    1B4DA2C7-3CAE-41F8-901C-31A12D6718B3.jpeg

Her name was Squawks. Her mate was Squeeks. He died, murdered by a Rouen Drake we had. When we moved in 2017, we gave our flock of chickens, AND SQUAWKS to a friend. She was pretty slow and walked with a limp, but still going strong.

Also, remember what the back of your shirt looks like if you let ducks or other birds sit on your shoulder. (Former parrot owner here)

    Mmmm duck. :39:
    :4:

    Just kidding.
I had a rooster like that. He wasn't top rooster either but he was pretty and much more friendly with me.

Baby ducks are cuter than baby chickens.

    Well, touché.

But I have to relate something about these ducks.

My Aussie Kelev (Kel) only knows about six words. One of them is “babies”. We have had baby chicks several time since we have had Kel, and oh he loves babies. He comes into his own! He can be Big Brother Protector Dog!

On Saturday Peri called from Tractor Supply and they had ducklings for $1... should she get some? So of course I said “Of course!”

Then I told Kel, “Kel! Guess what?! Mommy is bringing babies!”

He dashed out to the driveway. He waited all aquiver. When she got home, he walked on his hind legs trying to walk along and sniff the air holes in the box when she brought them in. When we took each out and let him snuzzle and intro, his body was electric but perfectly gentle. When we put them in the Enclosure and realized they were still small enough to get out, he went into herding mode... “You’re supposed to stay here!” When a cat approached, that cat got run off real quick. That night, we were watching TV. Usually this time of night, he’s usually like “Oh c’mon... let’s just go to bed!” This night, he kept getting more and more agitated. “Mommy! Daddy! It’s dark out there! We have to check on them!” When we opened the door, he didn’t care about peeing or anything else. He dashed to the Enclosure, looked in, then looked back at us, with a big smile that said, “Yeah, they’re fine”, then trotted back in.

My neighbor recently bought two pairs of mallards. When he took a vacation he asked me to lock them up every night to protect them from foxs. I wasn't prepared for the level of cuteness I encountered....

I'm a hunter through and through, but everyone in the family knows Kyle doesn't kill ducks. Having my neighbors ducks follow me around has made it that much worse.

I have a couple pics, but they’re not great. But tomorrow we are taking them down to the brook and pool.... I have high hopes for photo opportunities.

    Here’s a tider-over.

Yeah... kinda uncanny. They don’t look like they could do that. It’s almost like there are three or four roosters right behind the camera. Too many roosters.
